How the Great Escape Really Happened
Amazingly, much of what transpired in the film actually happened in Stalag Luft III as the POW's prepared their tunnels. But reading the book really brings it home. However, don't look for the Steve McQueen character. The American POW's were moved out of Stalag Luft III prior to the breakout. Any semblance to the McQueen character would be "Tokyo" Davy Jones, a Doolittle Raid pilot who made the booze for the 4th of July celebration, and went on to become a major general in the USAF.
Watch the movie and then read the book.
