This is one of the all-time top fantasy series!

This book is a treasure, the first volume of the fabulous series, The Wheel of Time. No comparison to the Amazon series of the same name, by the way...it is a thousand times better. The series is neither adapted from the novels nor is it truly inspired by the novels - as it changes and destroys the characters, basically only using their names, and perverts the world created by the author and the story he tells.
The rich world building and amazing tale by James Rigney Jr., aka Robert Jordan, makes this one of the classics of all time.
Though this first work is basically a stand alone novel, you will be thrilled to continue the adventure along with the main characters, who will live on in your imagination long after you have finished the books.

Strong beginning to an epic series

Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time is an epic fantasy spanning 14 books and a prequel. So 15 books, if you want to get technical. Jordan writes with flair, but takes time to focus on the details. Some would say that he focuses too much on the details, actually. He also has a tendency to run more main characters than your average book. That is, there are three main characters, but dozens of others receive their own chapters, some of them almost as many as the "main characters." Plots within plots, webs within webs, but always a satisfying conclusion. The good guys will win, as they should in this type of fantasy. This is the beginning to my personal favorite series. Let it be yours as well.Lire l'avis complet...

#1 of 12

CAUTION: Only start reading this book if you intend to read the entire series (12th will be released next year). The first 4 or 5 or excellent, but then the quality of writing decreases noticeably as more characters and minor, unimportant story lines get added in.

This is the first book in an adventure that covers thousands of pages, more probably than even the author envisaged (there are 12 now). Robert Jordan's series just grew and grew. I loved all of the books and this first one is like the cream on top of the cake, it makes you want more and more.

The story beings rather quickly with the peaceful villagers of Emond's Field getting savagely attacked by trollocs (troll, orc-like minions of the Dark One) forces three young men (Rand, Perrin, Mat) to confront a destiny which has its origins in the time known as The Breaking of the World. The book leads them on a journey to places vastly different from any they have ever known. Jordan does an excellent job of getting you to care about his characters. He does overuse many words and phrases, but to me the story is more important.

Aes Sedais, beasts and war oh my!

Jordan weaves the story so well that you don't wish you were there, you are there!

In this series you will find complex story lines, characters you either love or hate and a way of life loosely based Eastern philosophy (think of ying and yang)

Many compare Jordan to Tolkien. Aye, there are similarities. Most notably is the rough reading that one tends to come acrossed as the authors take us down the path of literary immersion. TAKE NOTES! It makes it easier.

Tolkien laid down the gauntlet for other writers to pick up. In many aspects Jordan has picked it up and superceded the original master.

Bottom line, if this isn't your genre, don't read it. However, if magic and mayhem twiddle your mind, take a chance and I would bet that you will sing the praises of Jordan.

Possibly the best fantasy series ever (Carlsberg)

Jordan is to fantasy what King is to horror. The world picture he builds is entirely convincing, while being amusing involving, touching and funny. The battle of the sexes has rarely been handled any better. At one stage I thought he had written a pot-boiler or two in amongst the many gems in this series, but on re-reading the series I find I was mistaken, all are very necessary to plot development.Supposedly the series ends with the next book (12th). I can't see how he will manage it, there are just too many loose ends for one volume. Thirteen somehow seems a far more likely number, and if you include the fore-runner, New Spring, then 14.
I recommend this series to anyone who enjoys a tale well told, whether a fantasy devotee or not - satisfaction guaranteed.

I am rebuilding my collection

I previously owned all of The Wheel of Time Series and was happy to find another well loved copy of the first book at a reasonable price. I lost my previous collection to a fire, when it arrived it felt a bit like getting an old friend back. I’m also silly and sentimental.
The book arrived packaged well and shipped in a timely manner. My only criticism would be there was a lot of tape to cut through that made me worry that I would damage the book when I took scissors to it.

This series is comparable to Lord of the Rings.

I have read this story and fell in love with it. I have been an avid reader for most of my life, but never really liked much of what I read. My friend turned me on to this and I have found the genre I like most. Of all the sci-fantasy books I have been exposed to, this is in my top three. The complexity of the many characters helps through the "boring" parts, and can create a new want of reading about just those sub-characters. I highly recommend this book to any level of reading one may have.
I have purchased this hardcover book for the simple reason of me having respect for the author to write such an intriguing story. Very rarely do I buy hardcover, but all my favorites are, so as to collect them and pass them on to future generations. Unfortunately the Mr. Jordan did pass this year, but the conclusion outlines have been made and will be released in novel format soon. I look forward to reading them and finishing the series.

An amazing epic

The Wheel of Time is such a deep, well presented, incredible universe to read. The Eye of the World is easily one of the best books I have ever read. You will be engaged by the simplicity of its beginnings, drawn in by the intrigue of unknown elements from the start, and you'll probably miss a few hours of sleep once you start getting into the middle of these books.
Beware, however, because you will notice a couple things as you read on in the series. Eye of the World, The Great Hunt and Dragon Reborn are amazing and cannot be beat. As the series continues, you'll notice the trend of little to no major plotline movement untill the last 100 or so pages. Its so sudden, these events, that it almost seems like the publisher said "C'mon man, just finish the project!". And, as you get into the middle and latter half of the series, you will be dragged through amazingly dull storylines centering around the three main female characters. Their contributions to the world and the storyline are very important, but the antics of Mat, the growth of Perrin and the trials of Rand are just more interesting and even more important by design.
Just give it a chance, you'll be glad you picked up this story.

Wheel of Time Series

THE WHEEL OF TIMES SERIES BY ROBERT JORDAN: I tried. I gave it over two years of my life and I still couldn't keep going till the end. Of course, the real end will probably be book fifteen or twenty or, heaven forbid, twenty-five and up. I'm talking about Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. Currently there are eleven books in the series, the latest, Knife of Dream, came out last October. The first book, Eye of the World, started out really well and I felt like I'd discovered a great new epic fantasy series similar to that of Lord of the Rings. The first book proved this and I thought it was great; I was also very excited at the notion of there being so many books in the series, with the story still incomplete. The second book, The Great Hunt, while not as mind-mashingly great as the first book, was still a great read, as was the third, The Dragon Reborn, where we find out that the main character is the guy prophesied to save the world, essentially. Eight books from th ere and the big showdown still hasn't come, while Jordan has continued to drag out into the hundreds and thousands of pages scenes, descriptions, and characters bickering at each other about the same thing while repetitively employing their annoying habits, to the point where I feel like I'm reading a children's nursery rhyme. Then there's the whole deal with the main character, Rand, having his undeniable love for three of the women characters, which he is okay with, and which they are okay with, apparently, and are quite willing to share him amongst themselves. I may have kept sloughing through the series better if there'd been a lot less purple prose and books four to ten had been condensed into say books four to six, which would've made more sense and made the stories move along better. Around book five I began spotting the routine the books go through: a few hundred pages of sitting around talking, explaining and regurgitating what's happened in the past books, bitching at each other; then about four hundred pages of people painstakingly crawling from a starting point to a destination (and bear in mind that these people can "travel" through vortexes real fast), and then the last hundred pages is a big action scene. At book seven, Crown of Thorns, halfway through, I decided I'd wasted enough time on Mr. Jordan and his wordiness, so I employed a slow speed-reading method which got me through them a lot faster. In about three days I reached the end of book nine and decided I'd had it and it just wasn't worth any more of my time. At this point I'd been able to summarize each book into three or four sentences, and I'd decided that if I can do that, maybe it's just not worth it and I should put my reading time to something more important that I'd enjoy reading more.

So here I am Mr. Jordan, signing off on your series that held so much promise and crashed and burned like a planet falling into a sun. Oh, and you know what, I'm not the only one who thinks this way. There are other people I know who've given up earlier than me, and others who've not even bothered to start because they know it's going to end bad.

On the plus side, I get to sell all my Robert Jordan books and make money off him!

Sayonara.

One of the Best Series Ever

Robert Jordan has the ability to describe a scene such that you can see it. The only author who has ever been comparable is Tolkein, and even Tolkein can't quite match Robert Jordan. Most authors would describe a blue dress as a blue dress. Tolkein could devote 2 or 3 paragraphs to it. Jordan could write a chapter and by the time you read it, you would see the character in your mind as if they are in your living room with you. If you want a fast pace, run far, far away from this book. If you enjoy Tolkein, and I mean truly enjoy the books, not the movies, get this series. You'll be set for reading for the next month to 3 months and salivating over book 12 like most people were over book 7 of Harry Potter.Lire l'avis complet...
