Reliability GREAT, Performance not so great. AWESOME price though :)

I bought this drive to use as an archive device. I use it to store data, plain and simple. This drive is not so hot on the speed, but it is reliable on the storage side. It is a really good drive, and I like the green features. I just wouldnt recommend it as a system drive. It is slow to recover from slowdown, and it's data transfer rate isnt spectacular either. None of that matters to me. I wanted a reliable drive that would last, and that makes this drive a perfect fit for how I use it.Lire l'avis complet...

Great drive for storage but dont use it as a boot drive.

The Western Digital Green series drives offer a great value. They are not the fastest drives, but they are not intended to be. They are not intended to be boot drives, and if use one for a boot drive you have done the drive and yourself a disservice.

They are intended to be high capacity drives that are reliable and conserve power. They do this very well.

works, using as an external hard drive.

Drive came formatted as an apple drive. Had to format it as windows drive. Appears to function well. Time will tell.

Solid, Stable Drive

Purchased 4 of these for a RAID array. Despite rumors that this "green" drive is not RAID compatible, I have not had any problems with the drives dropping out. The drives do go "green" by shutting down and parking the read heads when not in use to save energy. It takes a few seconds for the drives to turn back on after being dormant. But once spinning again, data transfer is exceptional. I am able to do upwards of 120mb/sec through a gigabit network connection.

I would expect, with the green feature, the drives should have a longer lifespan than non-green drives. Also the energy savings will add up over the long run.

I would recommend this drive for normal day to day usage. If you are looking for high end performance, choose the more costly Velociraptor or caviar black (WD2002FAEX) capable of 6.0gb/sec transfer rate.

Excellent disk for external hard drive

I replaced a 500GB HD in a WD MyBook Pro with this 2TB Caviar Green and it works very well. Installation was easy, data is accessed quickly and the disk is quiet and energy efficient. I would definitely recommend for this type of application or even a secondary internal disk.

This would probably work fine as an internal HD, although the Caviar Blue and Black lines are more aptly designed for an internal application.

Why buy anything else???

I now have a total of 48 of these spinning
in my home media setup. The green feature
is well worth the slight performance hit when
you first access the drive...I also have 17 1TB
and 5 500Mb drives from this series...not one
has failed so far and since ALL of my drives from
other manufacturers have failed over time I would
have to be crazy to buy anything else. I also have
2 of the black series and see little if any difference in transfer rates. I usually only read
one or 2 files at a time and for my purpose there is
no other realistic option. GO WD

Western Digital 2TB Green Hard Drive

This drive is extremely well worth the money. I have two of these drives in my HTPC for storing blurays and dvds. Never had a problem with either of them. The drives are also plenty fast for this type of work. I cannot tell any difference in speed with these drives compared to my 1TB Western Digital Black drive in real world performance.Lire l'avis complet...

Drive worked first time connected and is running perfectly. Good value.

I put this drive into my Dell Inpiron 531 desktop using the cables from the DVD drive. I used freeware from www.usease.com to copy my old 280G drive sector by sector to the 2T drive. Then I used a thumb drive boot disk containing their Disk Copy program. I copied the 280G drove to the 2T drive then used their Partition Manager software, which I had to register, to expand the primary partition to the full size of the 2T drive. Then I replaced the drive in the machine and reconnected my DVD drive and booted up with the new drive. It works!!!!Lire l'avis complet...

Easy installation, recognized by Windows 7 Pro 64-bit immediately.

I bought this massive drive strictly for movie and music storage for streaming to my blu-ray home theater.

The drive was easily installed and was recognized by Windows 7 Pro 64-bit on first boot. A full format and chkdsk took a while but was expected due to the drive's huge size.

I've had the drive running now for nearly two weeks with no problems whatsoever. The drive is very quite and CPUID's HWMonitor reports a constant temp of 30 degrees C with only a 2-3 degree increase when streaming a blu-ray movie.

I highly recommend this drive looking for large storage solutions!

Cheap, reliable, excellent value for the money.

I have had two SeaGate drives die on me. These WD Green drives are exceptional replacements. I've got a combined drive space of 6 TB (a far cry from the 100 MB hard drive I started with when I first bought a 233 Pentium!) and all three drives work flawlessly. No fear of data loss here. For the price, they can't be beat.Lire l'avis complet...
