Still the best hard drive manufacturer on the planet.

What can you say about hard drives? I've probably purchased 50 hard drives for many different computers in my lifetime and the ones that lasted the longest were always the Western Digital drives. I expect this one to last as long too. It is getting harder to find PATA drives in the store and getting this one online saved a few bucks as well. The main difference between buying one in the store and buying this one online is that there wasn't excessive packaging for this one. The drive is extremely quiet and so far is performing like a champ. It did not come with an installation disk so that you could clone an old drive but it was easy to download the software from the Western Digital site.Lire l'avis complet...

Advantages of External HDs

I like the idea of external hard drives. Convenience is the key. I can switch them from one computer to another and swap files, etc. Backing up precious data, music files, video, etc. is a must with the constant advancements and operating system problems, upgrades, crashes, etc. The old adage " never keep all your eggs in one basket" holds true with hard drives. The only problem I've had with the WD500oAAKB is I use it continuously, and forget to shut it down. The operating board inside the the harddrive burned out a tiny input (power)diode, causing the drive to stop working. No parts were to be found. So, to salvage the drive, I bought another one that was used and swapped the board. A little technical knowledge will come in handy once in a while. The WD hard drives are very dependable, and prices are becoming much more reasonable. If the prices stay reasonable, then I think these high memory external hard drives will become even more popular. 500 gig is itself becoming obsolete in today's faster and higher resolution formats, such as HDTV and Blu Ray, but for data files and music, etc, they are very handy. I hope this helps you decide. I'm not paid to write this review. I am just a WD fan. One more thing,,, I've always believed in having several smaller components that one. That way, if one fails, you still have the others.Lire l'avis complet...

An all around awesome drive!!

I bought this drive to upgrade a media server I have been running out of my closet.

The drive replaced an old Maxtor 20 GB drive whose noise was loud enough to even penetrate my closet door. With the WD5000AAKB running in place of that, the only noise I hear now are the fans.

Aside from the decrease in noise, the drive also gives me a transfer speed of 72 MB/s, while not the full 100 MB/s of ATA, is a big increase over the Maxtor, which only put out 32 MB/s.

This drive is a great choice for anyone still using IDE who is in need of high speed, high capacity, and low noise.

Western Digital Caviar® SE WD5000AAKB Hard Drive

I have an older Gateway with one of the first P4 1.8ghz processors in it. It came with a 40gb drive which when I got it back in the very early 2000s I did not think I would live long enough to ever fill it up to its capacity. Well along came things like IPods, Digital camcorders and the like and before I knew it I was about 90% full and the drive would have to be defraged after almost every download otherwise it would slow down to a snails pace. I went with a 250gb drive and got it about 60% full when it died so I decided on a 500 and chose the above WD500AAKB. THe first one I got was defective out of the box but the replacement has been working fine so far, is very fast in retriving data and has I hope all the drive space I will need for a while. THe price was great for a brand new oem drive, the company took care of replacing my defective one very fast and my old Gateway with only 320mb of RamDrive ram is running like new. For under $100.00 it was the best and cheapest way to upgrade without having to buy a new pc.Lire l'avis complet...

WD5000AAKB 500 GB IDE Hard Drive

I have been using Western Digital hard drives for several years and highly recommend them. I replaced my 80GB with a 500Gb when the old one went out. The nice thing about these HD is they are plug and play easy to set up and get running. The best thing is that Western Digital has 3yrs on their warranty compared to many others that only give you a 1yr warranty.Lire l'avis complet...

Reliability concerns

I have had WD HDDs before and they worked well. Even my WD original 7 year old internal still worked, but was too small. This was a great price for this amount of storage, and the size of the cache makes it very fast. I used WDs version of Acronis to copy my 40GB WD internal to this drive. However, when active, it is noisy. I have also had intermittant serious boot poblems, that led to the blue screen of death. For the most part it is ok, but not stellar. I kept my original boot drive just in case.Lire l'avis complet...

Western Digital 500 GB EIDE/IDE Hard Drive

Up and running perfectly with my Windows XP system. Needed a drive compatible with my motherboard. Great performance and plenty of storage, this is my second Western Digital drive, the primary being a 180 GB. Good value! I owned other non-sata drives and Western Digital has never disapointed me.Lire l'avis complet...

IDE PATA Hard Drive WD500AAKB Great for Old Systems

Purchased this hard drive because my computer system has mobile removable hard drive racks for use with different operating systems. Never had a problem with these hard drives. These are slower than current SATA hard drives, but have already made an investment in mobile racks for PATA drives.Lire l'avis complet...

Western Digital WD5000AAKB (500 GB, EIDE/IDE, 16 MB) Ha

I can remember when a 125 MB Hard Drive was over $200!!!! 500 Gigs for about 50 bucks is incredible. I have several WD drives and haven't been let down yet. I bought this one to replace the measly 40 gig drive in my old Dell Optiplex Gx-270 which can only fit one drive inside.

This drive was a great deal!!!
