Square Enix at it's best!

As a dedicated gamer who has always enjoyed Square Enix’s titles ranging from Final Fantasy to the Valkyrie Profile series, I was stoked when I found out that the game Valkyrie Profile was ported to the Playstation Portable (or P.S.P. for short). The ported version of the game is simply titled Valkyrie Profile Lenneth Edition which was released in 2006. The game holds true to the original version except for the addition of C.G.I. cut scenes, which to many including myself was a fantastic addition to the already superb game. The game is heavily inspired by Norse Mythology and takes place in Midgard while the player controls the titular Valkyrie named Lenneth as she is tasked with gathering the souls of the recently slain and training them to either become Einherjar, or her own personal companions for Ragnarok while Lenneth tries to remember her own memories from when she was human, which was stripped away when she became a Valkyrie. Furthermore the choices and actions you make can take away time and can result in both positive or negative consequences depending on your choices as well as help the player further progress through the fantastically engaging but complicated storyline. If you or anyone else enjoys RPG’s (role playing games) or more specifically JRPG’s (Japanese Role Playing Games) such as Valkyrie Profile and enjoys a good story driven game, then this is a must have for any RPG fan or collector.Lire l'avis complet...

A great game that needs more acknowledgement

A solid rpg that you can play on the go, unless your not fine with a harsh story about death.

"Simply, THE best RPG on the PSP!"

Valkyrie profile lenneth is one of the most original RPGs you will ever play. Its originality comes from its unique gameplay and the way the game progress. From the start, you are told you have 120 periods of time before the big battle Ragnarok which will determine the fate of the world. You play as Lenneth Valkyrie, a warrior maiden sent by Odin with the task of recruiting the souls of fallen warriors from Midgard so they may help Odin in the final battle.

The game is broken into 8 chapters, and each chapter made of 24 periods. Each time you enter a town, dungeon or any other location you use one (or more) periods. So you have to use them wisely. During a chapter, your main goal is to recruit characters and train them so you can send them to Odin. Recruiting characters can be a little confusing, since the game doesn't tell you where to go next. After you get a character, you will have to train him, or in other words level him up. The only way to do that is by fighting enemies in dungeons. Dungeons (and towns) are all in 2D, and based on plat forming. I found them rather short and easy, just jump from platform to another, you can shoot ice crystals and use them as steps to reach high places, or freeze enemies.

The battle system is what makes this game unique and different from other RPGs. You can bring up to four characters to battles, each character is assigned to a button. When you press a button, the corresponding character attack. You can perform different combinations, depending on the pattern you make. Stringing attacks together produces high combos allowing you to use special attacks, these special attacks do massive damage to your foes. You can also cast spells, change equipments, and use items during your turn.

Speaking of items, you don't buy them form shops. You make items from materialize points. You can make items like Potions, accessories, and weapons. You get MP after battles, and you can convert items you don't want into MP.

The experience points you get from battles can be used for different things. You can teach new skills for you characters, or level up an already learnt ones. You can also improve their traits (characteristics like Brave, selfish, etc) this is very important, cause if you send a coward, selfish warrior to the final battle he will only get in the way and probably die quickly.

This game is non linear. You have the choice to keep your characters (I know its very annoying to send a character after spending hours training him!), but that will weaken Odin and make him lose the battle against evil. Doing that will get you the worst ending!
Yes there are three different endings, the best ending can only be attained on hard mode. Playing on high difficulty is very rewarding, there are more dungeons, new weapons and even more characters! After you beat the game you unlock a bonus dungeon called the seraphic gate.

If you have played the original VP you might be a little disappointed, as there are no new things added to the game except for the awesome new cut scenes. But its still one of a kind experience and you should definitely play it!

Graphics: VPL is very beautiful and attractive game. The new cut scenes are awesome. 10/10

Gameplay: Innovative and deep with lots of customization. 10/10

Replay value: Three different endings, bonus dungeon, secret characters and a very non linear gameplay make the game very replayable

Overall: 10 (Recommended!)

The only truly great RPG on the PSP

True, the PSP has a real dearth of RPGs. And this remake adds barely any content to the original, save a few (admittedly gorgeous) FMV movies.

But then, they didn't really need to change anything. This was a fantastic game back on the Playstation, and time hasn't dulled it at all. The unique game structure and fantastic premise - you are a Valkyrie, collecting the souls of the dead to fight in the final battle of Ragnarok - capture the player from the very start. There's not really been another game like it, save the new prequel just released for PS2. This originality is particularly welcome on the PSP, since all the other RPGs are very traditional in their storylines and approach (random encounters, defeat big bad foozle).

The platform elements are another original touch. When you enter a dungeon, town, or adventuring area, the perspective shifts to a 2D platform style. It reminds me slightly of Castlevania; you need to solve problems to reach new areas. Not only that, you are able to avoid enemies if your timing is right, or if you are able to stun them before they attack. I love this, since I can't stand random encounters!

I don't want to spoil the storyline, so I won't say much; however, the game is very well written, and you will definitely want to play through to the ending. Or endings, I should say; the game can end in a variety of ways, depending on what events you witness, how many warrior souls you are able to collect, and even on the difficulty level you choose.

I really can't recommend this game enough, so I'll finish here - but anyone with a PSP and even a passing interest in RPGs should not pass this up. And don't judge by the retro graphics - it's the gameplay and story that make this fantastic.

Great Game!

I like the game very much. It is enjoyable and the graphic look really nice (instead of other platform making puppet moving around without any actions). I like the controller, pretty simple to figure out, O to jump, X for actions, etc. and you can change it too. Well I'm still in the game so I cannot tell you fully about the storyline, a little sneak peak is that seem interesting to find out that Valkyrie (Goddess of the Slain / Death) was once a human, she is now trying to find out about her past, while trying to save the Goddess world from obliteration. Good game from the beginning, I enjoy it very much. Got it for a good price, cant say anything more. Thank you to the seller and Ebay!Lire l'avis complet...

Valkyrie Profile Lenneth. One of the Best!

Well, Valkyrie Profile is one of the best RPG ever made. The perfect combination of Action RPG and RPG per turns. A delightful story, 3 possible endyngs and many secrets make this a very enjoyable game. I liked the 3D cinemas of this PSP version of the psx game, but i miss the original openning which i would have wanted to be an unlockable feature, anyway, the new openning is not bad either. Try it out! you won't repent!Lire l'avis complet...

One of the best PSX RPGs now in the PSP!

I can only say that Valkyrie Profile is one of the best RPGs ever made for the PSX. It came out originally back in 2000 and, since then, it has become a cult classic... You can confirm how rare it is now by checking the price on the available copies on eBay. ;) Good luck getting one!

But yes, it's a great game, Norse Mythology, a really cool main character, Ragnarok, Gods and Goddesses in conflict, a really fun battle system and a simply amazing storyline! Great character development and pretty nice graphics as well.

Now on the PSP, the game is all that and a bit more... It has nicely done cutscenes, a few extras and a new dungeon. So that'd add to the experience.

Any RPG fans MUST get this game. If you missed the original, then what are you waiting for? Start bidding!
