The start of an obsession

I originally read this book during the early 2000's. I was captivated by the authors attention to historical detail and writing style. I have since bought an abridged copy of the Lewis and Clark journals, the PBS Ken Burns movie "The Corps of Discovery", and even downloaded the complete seven volume Lewis and Clark journals in PDF format from the Wisconsin Historical Society.
UNDAUNTED COURAGE by Stephen E Ambrose is my favorite all time read. I am reviewing my original thoughts of this book. I just recently purchased the replacement for my original one.
It had been read by me several times, and will be read many more. If you're into history, the Lewis and Clark expedition, or you just need to write a book report for school, this book is the one for you. Please give this book a try, you will learn more each time it's read.

Excellent historical narrative.

Ambrose is a master story teller. This is a terrific overview of the expedition and companion to the Journals of the Lewis & Clark Expedition. On another note: This has book nothing to do with Trump presidency or the dreadful Hamilton musical mentioned by one completely idiotic reviewer.Lire l'avis complet...

Lewis and Clark

Ambrose is an historian and writes a detailed and well annotated description of the preparations and journey of Lewis and Clark in a most interesting era .It traces Lewis's background from his youth and his long relationship with Jefferson. It gives insight into life in the late 1700's and early1800's and that part is fascinating. The entire book demonstrates the politics of the time, even some of the background that is presently discussed in the Broadway show"Hamilton" and can be closely compared to the Donald Trump phenomenon.
The bad part is that the detailed historical form is annoying and difficult to read. As a researcher, Ambrose closely follows and includes many of the writings of the time for the sake of accuracy but not poetry. it is quite dry. and doesn't flow.
As one who is about to join a cruise of the Snake and Columbia Rivers to trace the route of Lewis and Clark I'm determined to know these details but for the casual reader a more concise tale might be better.

Undaunted Courage: Lewis & Clark's journey west (SVTM)

I normally do not like history related stuff - all that info about dates, places, people and events - but this author, Stephen Ambrose, writes about the Lewis & Clark Expedition in such a way that you feel like you are there riding the river and slapping at the "turrible musketurs" along with the Captains Lewis & Clark and their party of boatmen and woodsman soldiers. This was a trip into the unknown - a land filled with mystery and suspense. Everyday brought new experiences, difficulties and closer to their goal. But they had several missions to accomplish, and as readers, we get to accompany them on each leg of the journey. Would we have made the same decisions? We ponder the thoughts and wonder at their endurance and strength and undaunted courage. Oh sure, occassionally there are some "b-o-r-i-n-g places - but hey, even high adventure has to have it's down times too.

Having read basic journal excerpts in other volumes, which are very difficult to read and comprehend, Ambrose offers journal text in ways that puncuate the creative descriptions in unobtrusive ways. Let's face it, there are only so many ways you can say "went up river 12 miles today", but it's the interactions with the Indians, discoveries of "new" species of animals, and cliff-falling accidents that keep readers involved. These characters come to life on the pages as they face obstacles of sandbars, waterfalls, skin boils, thorn pierced feet and flea infested beds but still celebrate milestones with Pierre Cruzatte's playing of the fiddle, a belly full of elk, buffalo, colt or dog supplemented with roots dug by Sacagawea, a dram of whiskey and a twist of tobacco.

I have enjoyed this book so much that I have just purchased another of Ambrose's historical books and will take another stab at learning for life.

Undaunted Courage by Stephen E. Ambrose Jr. (1997)

A must read for anyone wanting a wonderful journey with Lewis and Clark to explore the Louisiana Territory. You feel like you are right there meeting the Indians, the animals of the plains and the want for food which was always a difficulty on the journey. Most of all the explanations of Jefferson as Lewis's mentor and then the downfall of Lewis at the conclusion of the book as he ends his life when it seemed that he had everything going for him.
I bought the book because I want to use it as a reference and reread the wonderful sections and discuss events with my Pacific Northwest History classes. You too will enjoy this wonderful read! Ambrose makes the Journals of Lewis and Clark come alive with his wonderful story telling talent in his Undaunted Courage.

My brother LOVED it.

MY brother loved it. He's a Marine and was in the hospital and started it but had to leave it when he left so I bought it for him and he read it in a week.

An engrosing read.

I am well aware of the criticism that has hovered over Ambrose's work, but I still love to read him, and Undaunted Courage is one of my favorites. I also own a standard hardback, which is my reading copy, and am thrilled to have this signed Easton Press edition. What I like the most about the book is that it succeeded in transporting me in my mind to the actual adventure. I am still amazed that Lewis and Clark made it there and back alive. I am about to start reading it again once I get my reading copy back from the last person I loaned it to.Lire l'avis complet...
