Cheap but technically unusable PDA.

I purchased this PDA inexpensively considering the 'processor power' that is under the hood. I expected to make this into a small multimedia center for going on long airplane trips. Although I did manage to play mp4 episodes of my favorite tv shows, the performance was just not there. The LCD works nice in lit environments, but when used in dark environments such as an airplane, the LCD backlight can give the image an annoying white glare. Since this device can not be upgraded to Windows Mobile 2003, the number of applications that can be executed on this device is EXTREMELY limited. Most programs out there that would make this processor shine, are designed to work on PocketPC OS 2003 or higher. Don't expect to use the onboard memory slots too much either. I found their transfer rates extremely slow for multimedia applications. I could play mp3s using Windows Media Player nicely, but videos needed to have extremely high buffering for smooth playback. Quality also had to be reduced by 25% in order to receive smooth playback of MP4 streams. Loading images from the memory cards using Internet Explorer proved to be extremely slow. IE would load a 3MB image in 1 minute. Getting online using the built in wifi was easy sometimes, and other times horrible, or impossible. You needed to change your internet 'location' then turn off 'power saving mode' then connect and see if it works. And then those settings would be reset once you disconnect. Terrible!

By far the worst problem I had with this device is the fact that it resets itself and if you did not spend 40 seconds doing a backup to memory card, ALL your data, your time settings, internet settings, EVERYTHING would be wiped out. This is also a random occurrence, i have yet to see a reason for this device to constantly decide to reset itself! Completely unreliable. My old trusty Palm III was better! By Far!

DO NOT BUY THIS!

TOSHIBA E740 POCKET PC

I was looking for a pocket PDA with the ability to connect to the internet and the TOSHIBA E740 seemed to be just right; it had a convenient size / feel to it and it came with many accessories. It looked great with all the features ergonomically placed & it was made of mostly metal. It could run dual memory cards for extra storage - both CF & SD cards. It's screen was very clear and displayed pictures well. It was priced more reasonable than other PDA / Pocket PCs. I have been using my laptop to store appointment data & I thought that switching to a smaller gadget would be fun..... It stopped being fun when I started having to use the stylus to enter ALL data! What a pain! I have poor vision and the smaller screen was driving me crazy! The screen was back lit and when it was turned up to the highest level, it was quite sharp and clear BUT at the highest level, that level would suck energy right out of the batteries faster than a thirsty kid drinking a coke! You could extend the battery time greatly by turning down the brightness BUT then the screen clarity really got bad. I wound up keeping it on the charging cradle any time I wasn't using it. Of course, I could NOT keep it in it's nice protective case while using the charging cable..... I could use the cable connector while it was in the case but not the stand. If I carried it in my pocket, the battery life was about 2-3 hours NOT really too bad, BUT IF I tried to change out the discharged battery for a charge replacement, I lost ALL THE DATA! I compensated for this my saving the data regularly so that I could reload it later. I wanted to use the TOSHIBA E740 with a GPS card in the cf slot BUT the combination of short battery life and small screen size ruled that out for me...... I had purchased a dash mount for the unit thinking that I could mount it on the dash of my truck to see & use it...... BUT my combination of poor vision & the small screen made that a danger to anyone & anything out on the highway or even near the curb. I think that someone without my visual limitations who was more tolerant of the peculiarities of the TOSHIBA E740 could really enjoy it and ALL it can do....... but I have returned to my seemingly gigantic 15" laptop with it's BIG buttons and I now carry a paper pocket calendar to keep track of special events & appointments with a pencil for data entry (it won't run outa ink). No more headaches from eyestrain, no more poking in data with a stylus...... I am still a techie & like gadgets but my gadgets are bigger and simpler to use! Deo ReadLire l'avis complet...

Toshiba e740 - Review after 6 months of use

I purchased the e740 new because it offered the wifi and had a very small form factor. Immediatly I set everything up, being an avid user of Outlook I synced up all my address info. and off I went.>
Overall the unit performed well, but when it warns you that your battery is low, it means your battery is low. Charge this immediatly or lose all your data! There is no little backup battery in this unit. This is OK if you use the backup utility when you sync, but what if your PC is in Chicago and your in LA?

The wifi, works well and the battery seems to maintain a charge for a fairly long period of time even with the wifi enabled.

Also, Toshiba really offered very little support for this product. There were not many updates, and it seemed to leave the market rather quick compared to others I had researched at the time.

Finally, after about 6 months, it just stopped working all together. I am very careful with my things, and really did not use it as hard as I thought I would so this was very disappointing.

For the price I paid, it was very dissatisfied with the support and the product. I would never recommend this product.Lire l'avis complet...

Might have been ok experience with E755 vs E740

After reading I realized the E740 was going to have some issues, I regret not waiting for an E755 to become available. They don't have some of the issues the E740 has. I got this to do two things: one is to read media files from an SD card, one to check and answer email and web sites.

I have purchased a couple different SD cards now, and the device will not work with the new ones. It will only work with a couple of older ones we happened to already have.

The internet: I have been able to read the msn mobile news but that's about it. Not much more than I can do on my non-smartphone. When I get to a site, the processor is too slow to get very far, then it freezes up on me. I may keep trying but have gotten a little frustrated.

We did get it to work with our wireless and I am able to do limited things with it. However if I had it to do over, I would either try the E755 or the Nokia model.

My advice would be: don't buy this model until AFTER you read and research all you can about it so you know the shortcomings. You may decide to get a different model.

making ground

The Toshiba e740 is an excellent example of moving forward as far as handheld technology goes. The integrated wifi works fantastic and is extremely easy to use. The interface is also very intuitive, it is set up like a standard Windows setup. The battery life is also impressive, at one point I listened to MP3's for 2hours, put it down for 3hrs, and listened to it again for another few hours. The synching to my home computer also worked well and went very quickly. The biggest problem is the memory, there is only 64MB which is about average, maybe less. However this problem can be remedied with the purchase of a memory card and since the e740 has two slots finding a compatible card is not difficult. Overall a great unit.Lire l'avis complet...

Great Product

Pros: The device works perfectly. I bought the unit used and have enjoyed all the features built into it. It's doing everything I thought it would do and more.

Cons: The only bad thing I can say about the device is the Record Button location. Although it would be though to put it any other place, the least it could do is NOT turn the unit on when it is touched by accident or when I'm taking it out of my pocket.Lire l'avis complet...

Toshiba Pocket PC E740

This is a great product but, do not expect major support from Toshiba. They are still selling this product at full price $300-$400, but they are not offering any upgrades, free or paid. The product is like having a mini computer complete with microsoft office at your fingertips. Purchase a seperate keyboard and you will not be disappointed. I take notes in class with mine. I also use it to record lectures. I have access to numerous records beacause of the cf and sd card slots. I take care of my parents and the device allows me to access their medical records quickly(sd card). The address book is phenominal. It also has outlook and you can set up reminders for appointments, birthdays etc. Plus loads of other stuff. It is a good buy!!!Lire l'avis complet...

Toshiba Pocket PC e740

Like all palm-tops, the Toshiba e740 is a compromise. However, with the right accessories, the e740 is as handy as a pocket-on-a-shirt! Having attempted using those tiny, thumb-operated keyboards on my cell-phone for entering appointments into the phone’s built-in organizer, I decided there HAD to be a better way. The e740; and its newer sister-machine, the e750 are much better ways of carrying tons of information around, ready-to-use at a moments’ notice.

I purchased two different add-on keyboards: a full-sized, fold-out and a push-on mini, (about the size of a Blackberry). I have also purchased several expansion cards of different sizes for different sizes and a GPS system. The combination of uses provides a competitively-priced, “full-spectrum” tool providing access to computerized office tools such as wireless e-mail, Word and Excel — as well as a music player, games console, and of course navigation — all in a package about the size of a deck of cards. I have found the unit quite powerful and extremely flexible. Although Toshiba seems to treat the unit rather like a step-child through their spotty support, I’ve only had one major problem: the all-important connector through which flows power, synchronizing signals and such. The connector is fragile and one of my three broke, making that unit completely useless — with repair costs nearing the purchase price of the unit.

Overall, I have found the unit intuitive, functional, handy and much more powerful and useful than my cell-phone. A great buy!

Great product - 4 years ago

This product has some obvious places that needed to be changed and updated: awkward design, terrible battery life, weird setup function for wifi and reset that occurs too often. It is a decent product but incompatible with Microsoft Vista and Office 2007. I wouldnt buy a brand new one if I was really concerned about function and usefullness to my everday life.Lire l'avis complet...

Nice PDA but has limitations

I bought this PDA for movies and games, and only kept it a week. The screen is not that great compared to my Dell X50; it can't be seen very well from all angles and has to be kept at a certain angle to see it well. The software is all standard and runs fine, and having bluetooth or wireless integrated is great. Since the screen was very important to me, I traded it in for a much more expensive Dell Axim which has VGA resolution, but paid $210 rather than $100.Lire l'avis complet...
