decent unit

nice sleek design.plays movies great.i bought this to use as a qam tuner for my older tv.i use the component cables for the video since tv signals are downconverted to 480 anyway and i only have 1 hdmi input on my tv.i use the digital coax cable to feed the sound to my 6.1 reciever.if you've done your homework, you know if you want the free qam channels you have few choices.rent a box or pay for digital cable, get a tivo with tuner or a dvdr with tuner,or a new tv with qam.qam is the band of channels that the cable company wants you to pay for.if you have analog cable, the digital channels are free already there.you can expect to get about 70% of them.mtv, cartoon network, usa etc will be scrambled.
here are a few quirks i have found so you know what to expect.
qam tuner looks great.analog tuner not so.it looks worse than any vcr i can remember.lots of graininess, dot crawl, and softness.if you watch analog local channels,i would run a splitter and feed the tv direct for that portion of the signal.
it takes some channels 2-3 seconds to lock on to the signal.not the fastest surf machine.
when powering up,even if no dvd is in,it still spins the motor and tries to load with a clunk.they should have a sensor to detect no disk.
unlike most tv's it does not mix the channels together in order.you have to manualy switch between tuners

Awesome unit that works with many features I like.

I was amazed when this unit read my discs that had not been finalized by old failed unit this replaces. (Was not a Toshiba unit) It tells you how many minutes are left blank on your disc whenever you pause the recording to remove commercials. The remote is not top notch intuitive for me yet, but I attribute that to leaning on my part. Pauses and re-records are almost instantaneous which is a new experience for me. I do get blue screen error message on disc done on old unit but I suspect it should finalize what I have added and play fine. Has multiple programs on same disc. Even though extremely pricey by todays standards I would buy an identical one to this. Makes me think I should look for another for when I wear this one out.. LOL.. One con I should mention it does not allow me to title the shows I record on the disc. I use magic marker on disc itself.Lire l'avis complet...

Upgraded my Toshiba recorder. Old one still works but I liked the extra features on the upgrade. It’s used but looks good and works well!

Works But Lacking in Many Areas

I bought this to replace a Panasonic DVD recorder (it stopped working after 4-5 years) and find the Toshiba very lacking in comparison. I use it to record TV shows to watch at my convenience. Every time the machine is turned on, you have to wait for it to load, and if you make any changes (adding a title name, deleting a title, e.g.) again you have to wait for it to load. Slow, slow, slow. Unlike the Panasonic, you can't add the title when you set it to record but rather have to go to the recorded show and remember what it was, then put a title on it. The Panasonic system for typing in names was much more efficient, too. If it was set for repeated recording (daily, weekly, etc.), the name showed up for each episode. It now seems obvious to me that the Toshiba is intended mostly for transferring from tape to DVD. I couldn't get the manual time set to stay set and had to call Toshiba, which instructed me how to "fix" the problem, but this direction should have been included in the operation manual. I bought this because it had good reviews and was a reasonable price, but I probably should have spent more and gotten another Panasonic.Lire l'avis complet...

Straight forward and functional.

The unit works as expected, only the video input line one in the back does not. I am able to record via the front input, wich still serve my purpose.

Toshiba DR570 DVD Recorder

Replaced a Sony VCR with this product, because Sony does not make a digital tuner DVD Recorder now days for some unknown reason!

This product operates great! I live in a fringe area for reception and the digital tuner is better than the Sony TV digital tuner and also better than the Channel Master, Dishnet, and Zenith Digital converter boxes tuners!

The DVD discs do not come with the unit, but are dirt cheap at about $1 each and they can be formatted (erased) and the recording operates great!
The remote is for the DVD unit only and will not operate any TV controls like some VCR remotes!
If you want to replace a VCR recorder with a good DVD unit, this seems to be the one! I did not get a DVD/VCR recorder because I seen that most units that I reviewed, possibly all that I reviewed, do not record directly to a VCR tape from the digital tuner in the unit, you have to record to the DVD then dubb (record to the VCR tape) or record to the tape from another source.

Toshiba DR570: a good dvd recorder product

What is good:
1. Great support for all DVD record medium i.e. +/-R, +/-RW.
2. Good MPEG encoding. It plays without any noticeable jitter unlike other vendor DVD recorder I experienced.
3. Flexible input/output ports: many HDMI ports, RCA, DV inputs.
4. Built in digital tuner.
5. Good HD quality video up to 1920x1080 60Hz.

What is not:
1. Editing for title is cumbersome. It's also limited
2. Color and smoothness quality is ok but not as good as my TV receiver.
3. Device is a little warm on top part where the DVD is while recording. Might need some room for air circulation.
4. Some delay when changing channel. Tuner takes few sec. to lock onto the chn.

Wish to have:
1. Internet connection support like wlan would be nice.

Overall the good outweighs the bad points. It is a reliable unit. I think I made a good choice and enjoy having it very much for years to come.

A great recorder with many features.

This is one of the best mid-priced recorders on the market. Unfortunately it is not being produced by Toshiba anymore---been replaced with recorders with less features. What I like most about this unit is the built-in tuner. Not a lot of recorders have this feature. Great to be able to record direct from rooftop antenna as the tuner pulls in many broadcast including some HD programs. In addition, the recording features are easy to use and producing a DVD or CD is almost effortless. I like it so well that I plan to get another unit like this one for a bedroom system.Lire l'avis complet...
