don't let gregory peck take all the praise!
Somehow my education did not impose on me a reading of Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird," although I saw the excellent movie based on it several times. What a pleasure to discover, when finally picking up the book in my middle age, that the people who inhabit this book spring fully grown directly from the mind of Harper Lee herself, rather than just the actors in the film.
Harper Lee has written not a single one-dimensional character, and has created a few of the best realized and strongest characters ever put into print: not just Atticus, Jem, and Scout Finch, but also the dignified Calpurnia, the eager Dill, the peaceful but ghostly Boo Radley, even the degraded and predatory Ewell family. These characters jump off the page like in no other novel I can recall. There is no doubt in my mind that these folks are as real as any of the people I see walking down the street, and I feel for Atticus in particular a similar sort of astonished respect as I do for my own father.
If somehow the book itself has passed you by, or if (sadly) it was imposed on you for a class assignment when you were young, revisit it. It's one of the best ever written.Lire l'avis complet...
Save Your Money
The writer goes back and forth with the characters and it is difficult to figure out who she is talking about. We read it for book club and 9 of us were present for the discussion tonight. We had a great discussion trying to figure out what the book was about. We all thought it was a very sad book and frankly, not good. I would not even buy another book by this author. Most engaging book I have ever read.
I have probably read the book 30 times (at least). I assigned To Kill a Mockingbird when I taught at the university level, and the students ALWAYS loved the lessons, whether or not they had read it previously. After retiring and teaching at the high school level, I still teach this wonderful novel. The students enter into the reading and discussion tentatively because they have heard the accusations of the book being highly racist. They invariably determine that it is "anti-racist," and a book that EVERYONE SHOULD READ. I personally ordered a set of books for every student in my sophomore class because I wanted the students to have the book as their own, to be able to mark and highlight it while studying the work, and to add it to their personally library upon completion.Lire l'avis complet...

Why am I unsatisfying!
1) the pages and cover are bent at front matter
2) I thought the cover appearance of tree and color of red, black, and green instead of different cover I've had

Very Compelling
The story is compelling. I have alwys meant to read it. When I heard that it would become a banned book I decided to order my own copy.

A world not to be forgotten
This is an American classic. That statement should not be news to anyone. Don't be afraid to read it because it's labeled "classic." Don't be a snob, determined to never read books labeled as such. It is adroitly written as the reader is brought into a town, a world, an era that few recall, or have desire to recall. The characters are people with fears and foibles you may recognize.
