Does the job!

This is my first TiVo experience after years of using cable and satellite DVR units. I was not expecting the set-up to be as complicated as it turned-out to be, but, as my unit was purchased used, I believe that made the necessary steps less obvious on connection. Once we re-configured the box to our cable service and placed the IR sensor for the remote in the correct spot, we were in business! The menu is easy enough to learn, and upon testing the online recording options we seem to be communicating fine. I was a little disappointed that with digital cable this model will only tune to "basic" channels when recording on a cable channel. Still, all in all, I'm happy with my purchase. If you have a busy schedule, TiVo is a great way to store the programs you like for viewing on your time! :)Lire l'avis complet...

Great Product! Fairly Easy Setup.

Here it goes. I'll be plain & simple about it.
Like --- Tivo is a great product that far surpasses the DVR I used to have. The cable company DVR was very simple to use but didn't have any of the cool things that my Tivo has. Very cool to look at. All menus are colorful and make you feel good. The sounds are kind of addicting as well.

Cons --- Setup was easy for me, but to someone who doesn't know anything about setting up a "Home Network" the setup might be a "Trial & Error" experience. Other than that the entire setup process does take about an hour, or 45 minutes, depending on your knowledge of networks and such.

Overall --- 4/5 stars for this product. Some things can be confusing at first, but when all is said and done, this thing rocks the house. Very cool DVR with tons of options. Plus setting your DVR from the internet at work is pretty neat too.

TiVo Needs a Subscription to Work

The TiVo series 2, TCD649080 will get you into using TiVos for a small
expense. The hardware alone is useful, even without a subscription. UPDATE -- June 2011 -- Wrong!! TiVo now
seems to download something so that YOU CANNOT USE THE HARDWARE WITHOUT A SUBSCRIPTION.. I GUESS THEY CHANGED SOMETHING. WORKAROUND UNKNOWN... SORRY. You
can record and playback, record by schedule which you set like a VCR. With
a subscription, extra from TiVo the TiVo is much more useful, but you can
try it initially with no subscription ... IF the box has been previously set up and has not been reset to require a login with TiVo. With this unit you can also
pause and "fast forward" your live TV as it automatically keeps a 30 minute window of the program you are watching.
BEWARE... this unit will not take a digital cable directly and will not take
a HD signal. Buy series 3 or newer for that.

Dual Tuner Tivo is a great recording device.

I am enjoying the Tivo very much. I like being able to record two channels while watching a third. I have Tivos in three rooms total and can easily transfer shows from one to the other on my wireless network. The only dislike is the quality of the pictures with a composit connection is definately below HDMI. Its more like hooking up a VCR. I am wondering if putting a Tivo with HD in the mix if this would help....Lire l'avis complet...

Amazing DVR

We are really enjoying our DVR. The only issue that we are having is that since all television has become digital, the DVR will only record one show at a time and you are forced to watch it while it's recording. The many positives outweigh this small inconvenience though. We have also purchased the TiVo wireless router, so we get our updates, can transfer shows to our computers and handheld devices and play online games on the TV. Overall, it was a great purchase with no regrets.Lire l'avis complet...

TiVo Series 2 TCD649080 (80 GB) Receiver

Hello every one ,i record a LOT of shows everyday while at work, i used to have 2 VCR's to record all my favorite shows on different channels and eventually had one vcr go bad so i figured instead of replacing it i would get out of the 'stone age' and get into some new technology so i found a used Tivo on eBay.
it was a model TCD 649080 which is a dual tuner unit that can record two shows at the same time. Now i don't have to worry about paying any fees ever again.
yes the initial cost is expensive but think of the cost of monthly service which is around $13 (around $150/yr) so after a few years it will pay for itself.

The instructions are very easy to follow and everything you will need to install is included with the Tivo (YouTube even has instructional videos available online)
you use some of the supplied cables to hook up the unit, follow the on-screen instructions, setup an account online at Tivo.com and the unit will download updated software and install it so your always updated with the newest features. the initial update might take anywhere from a few minutes to a half hour or so.

but once the setup is complete you can sit back and enjoy life with your Tivo!! i don't know why i ever owned a VCR after using my Tivo, it takes a little getting used to all the features but you will get the hang of it.
there are a lot of features but the coolest one has to be online scheduling, if I'm not at home i can get online someplace, and go into my Tivo account and setup my recordings that way. its a very handy feature to have.
one other great feature with this model is it can record two shows at the same time while you are watching a third. a dual tuner is the only way to go and highly recommended. but if your wanting to record in HD you will need to buy a different Tivo model #Like a series 3 or other models out there...

i could keep going on telling about all the great stuff a Tivo can do but you would just be wasting time here by not getting out and buying your own Tivo!

just go get one and start enjoying your new 'toy'

Tivo review

The DVR worked good but Tivo service would not activate it because they don't activate Tivo series 3 and below . So unless you do like I did and take the hard drive out and put it in one you already have that I activated two years ago before they quit activating the older ones . The one I have went out and it was a bad hard drive. So I switched hard drives with the one I got on eBay and reset and deleted everything on it and my old one works great. If you don't reset and delete it won't record. It will keep giving you a hardware error. Just thought this might be helpful to someone who doesn't know.Lire l'avis complet...

Stop paying the Cable Co hundreds a year for a DVR

The series 2 dual tuner Tivo is an excellent device with the lifetime subscription, thus saving the monthly fee to rent a DVR from the cable company. One of the reviews above says you can't watch a different channel while recording another is incorrect, because you can indeed. You will need a DTA (digital to analog) box from your cable provider to make the dual tuner function work, unless your cable will work straight out of the wall without a box. The Tivo To Go software allows transfers of recordings (videos, music and pictures) between the computer and the Tivo,so you can burn your recordings to DVD, and watch downloaded video stored on your computer on your TV. I use VideoReDo TVSuite V4 to convert the tivo files. All in all, its an excellent choice if you can do without HD.Lire l'avis complet...

TIVO brought television to the 21 century

I own this model and the old Sony model for those of you that had TIVO before it was cool... I've been a customer of TIVO since 1995 and TIVO is the Cadillac of dvrs. It works with any major satellite and cable companies. If you have a TIVO you dont need a dvr box, and the charges that go with it. Get a sat/cable box and connect a Tivo dvr to it. The hard part is finding a box that doesnt have a dvr. They cant copy what TIVO has. Make sure you get a lifetime subscription. Some talk about TIVO got away from free service but TIVO has always been subscription based. Directv doesnt have this anymore and Dish has a deal with them, and I cant comment on that. I dont have Dish Network. The menu system on a TIVO is second to none. You can record every single episode of any program that you find in the menu with the touch of a button with the season pass. No time setting to mess with,,,it does it all. Let me take the Cadillac back,,,,Aston Martin of dvrs....Lire l'avis complet...

Its an oldie but a goodie

What use could am analog tivo be you may wonder? This is the last available model that offered an IR blaster to control the set-top box. I am using mine to control a direct TV tuner and it's a lot cheaper than the $25 fee that DirecTV charges just to have access to a digital box. And if I got another one and stuck it in my bedroom then it shares the shows. Plus it supports the tivo desktop plus software so I can transfer to my computer or phone for storage. Its also really fast. it may be low res but who cares?Lire l'avis complet...
