A look into the future by taking a trip back to the past....Star Trek's inspiration, also the Interrosater (the first intergalactic Color Television ) The idea of alien abduction by a tractor beam.....all of this and so much more. The first science fiction movie to get an award. This Island Earth has it all. I fully enjoyed this movie once again, I had several VHS copies in stock in my old video store from 1983 to 2011, so I had to buy a DVD to have it to show my 2 year old grandson, who has watched it several times, and will probably watch it again! The first space opera now on DVD

This film came out in 1955 and changed my life. I fell in love with space, saucers, Sci-Fi and bug-eyed monsters. Faith Domergue, too. She looked great in a tight space suit!
I became an instant fan, and drew the Metaluna Mutant endlessly in school notebooks.
THIS ISLAND EARTH is the model upon which space adventure movies from FORBIDDEN
PLANET to STAR WARS are derived. Seriously.

Raymond Durgnat has written a whole chapter about this in his film critique, FILMS AND FEELINGS. Great reading. He explores this movie's curious resonance with 1950's American pop culture. The parallels are uncanny.

Jack Arnold, the director who also brought us THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN and the Creature from the Black Lagoon movies directed most of this movie, after taking Joseph Newman off the project. He said later that if the whole film had been directed by him, he would have gotten us off to Metaluna much sooner in the film.

Two music cues from TIE (Shooting Stars & the main title) have been out since 1962 on DIck Jacobs' THEMES FROM HORROR MOVIES. But now the entire soundtrack by Herman Stein (primarily)is now avilable on a great newly recorded CD, also from eBay. Mr. Stein did genius level work here. I am happy to say that although in his 90's, he sent me a nice postcard thanking me for a fan letter!

Also, Forrest Ackerman has a book out about THIS ISLAND EARTH. Have to get that...

In 1975, while he was guesting on the sitcom TEPERATURE'S RISING, I got to meet and interview the head alien in this film, the late Jeff Morrow. In real life, he had a most pleasing Georgia accent, similar to that of Randolph Scott! He covered it up in the movies he made. Jeff was a most gracious Southern Gentleman and a sweet human being. He played the unlikely role of an alien from outer space with grace, dignity and panache.
In 1965 I first got an autographed copy of the novel upon which it was base. Sadly, the book was not as good as the movie, being a colection of cliches. The screenplay was a great mporovement.
This movie takes on what could have been a trite story and provided color, thrills and horror; this has stayed a favorite of mine for these many years. MYSTERY SCIENCE 3000 used this a a parody basis for thier movie...but it deserves better. These actors played it straight, and I like it that way.

Get it and enjoy "..the supreme excitement of our time!"

I am a fan of the 1950s, science fiction movies. This one is in color. It rates as one of the best of its kind. It's fun to watch even though the special effects of the day were pretty crude. A trip down memory lane

Thank you for saving these campy old movies. The movie was complete with original theater trailers. Great sound, great color. No flaws, A joy to watch again.

Top notch sfi-fi, a classic example of great writing..

One of the classic, first movie to show a alien civilization. Great cast and special effects.. you will not be disappointed

It's great

This Island Earth, Forbidden Planet, the original Time Machine. The original War of the Worlds are the greatest SciFi movies ever made. This Island Earth is fantastic.
