Engaging And Entertaining With A Twist

A different twist on spy movies. Overall it had good flow and story line. I didn't like Pierce Broslin's character. I think it would have been better to cast a less well known acter for his role. I was having trouble bying his portrayel of the character. Lire l'avis complet...

Pierce Brosnan in a subtle 007-type of role

This is a very different twist on a spy thriller. It's more subtle and conniving and undercover. And we wonder at the end if Brosnan as Andy, British Intelligence agent, will make good on his promise to the sad, disillusioned and repentent Tailor, played exquisitely by Geoffrey Rush (recently superb in the award-winner The King's Speech). I loved how it played out, and the wicked manipulation of Brosnan--almost like an Iago in Shakespeare's Othello--prodding the tailor on to nefarious deeds, knowing it could ultimately cause the poor malleable man's downfall. Brosnan's characterization was low-key but, I thought, brilliant. He always amazes me--as he did singing in the musical Mama Mia! I like him as an actor, and I always enjoy watching him. His good looks combine with a down-to-earthiness and a humorous twist that I like. And Geoffrey Rush was perfect--absolutely perfect!--as the Tailor of Panama. Jamie Lee Curtis was okay as the wife and seemed a good match for Rush. And to top it all off was the interplay of nations, all equally willing to believe erroneous spy malarkey and pay millions and billions for it, with zeal to even go into combat/war to obtain it! Sound like real life?? All in all a fun film that can be watched certainly now and again with renewed interest and appeal.Lire l'avis complet...

Le Carre meets James Bond in a clever adaptation

If you are a fan of John le Carre's work, you will have doubts about Pierce Brosnan as the louche Andy Osnard of Her Majesty's Secret Service. You will, however, admit that, overall, this is a clever adaptation of a subtle storyline. The le Carre fan has to accept that the BBC set the standard with "Tinker, Tailor", "Smiley's People" and "A Perfect Spy" and that any other production cannot measure up to those in terms of faithful reproduction of all the subtleties of a le Carre spy story.

Having said that, one must add that this production of "The Tailor of Panama" economically splices many touches of le Carre's original into a fast-moving story with twists and turns, and that it reasonably faithfully recreates the character of Harry Pendel (Geoffrey Rush). Harry wants to please everyone, so when he is pressured to produce material for British spy Andy Osnard, he produces it, carefully doctoring the truth to fit what Osnard wants to hear. Osnard's bosses like what Harry produces, so Harry gives them more of it. Harry, after all, only wants to please.

The consequences of a surfeit of "intelligence" on the political movements of Panama are extreme. To meet a perceived threat, the western alliance takes drastic military action. Across the stage of political, diplomatic and military blunders, a bizarre selection of characters grapples with truth and risk/reward ratios while Harry goes on being Harry until the wages of his deception are paid.

A good and entertaining film with convincing perfromances from all characters. It stops short of being over-sentimental or over-farcical and is less than faithful to the underlying message of the book. But, overall, it succeeds.

Save your money

Not Bronson's usual excellent work- bad directing. I answered some of the questions because only had yes or no -that won't get you the right answer

The tailor of Panama will engage you!

An interesting story – although it is copied from Graham Greene's "our Man in Havana".
The principal characters – played by Geoffrey Rush, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Pierce Brosnan – are strongly portrayed. However, both Rush and Brosnan play very faulted characters (although Rush is magnificent as the tailor in the film’s title). The setting is suitably exotic and the cinematography is excellent. Utterly disappointing

I love John Le Carre's fiction. AND I have tremendous appreciation for the talents of the actors in this film.
But honest to God, I could not get past the trashy, raunchy sex scenes. I had to turn the movie off half way
through.

Worst Brosnan I have seen !

Absolutely the worst attempt at humor I have seen. This is billed as a thriller when it is really a lame attempt at humor. Not one of Pierce Brosnan's better appearances !
