Cult Classic [1985]

The stuff is an alien substance of sorts, found bubbling out of the ground in small towns across the United States. It looks like ice-cream, tastes great, but ... once it takes hold of you, it becomes addictive and deadly. But what is its secret ingredient?
Enter Michael Moriarty ('Troll', 'Courage Under Fire'), who is hired as an industrial saboteur by representatives of a food company to discover just what makes the stuff so addictive. As the stuff becomes more readily available, the people selling it are no longer content to merchandise through the smaller outlets. They begin to advertise it nationwide.

David 'Mo' Rutherford (Moriarty) tracks the stuff across the country with the help of Nicole (Andrea Marcovicci) and a young boy, Jason (Scott Bloom), witnessing its effects on the population. During their efforts, they are assisted by Col. Malcolm Grommett Spears (Paul Sorvino) and the wacky cookie entrepreneur, Chocolate Chip Charlie (Garrett Morris, 'Saturday Night Live'). As the film progresses, it becomes impossible to know just who to trust, and resisting the stuff becomes increasingly difficult.

Larry Cohen has become a hero to those whose interests are in cult horror/sci-fi films, having turned out classics like 'A Return to Salem's Lot', 'The Ambulance', and 'Q: The Winged Serpent'. This is his fourth collaboration with Moriarty and it is well worth the money. 'The Stuff' contains comedy, action, science fiction, and horror - a combination of 'The Blob' and 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers', with Cohen's crazy sense of humor thrown in for good measure.

Also stars Brian Bloom, Danny Aiello, and Patrick O'Neal.

Bonus features on this edition include an informative audio commentary with director, Larry Cohen, TV Spots, original theatrical trailer, and widescreen presentation.

Buy it! You'll be addicted.

Can't get enough of the Stuff!

A new taste sensation is sweeping the nation! The Stuff, a creamy white dessert with an addictive taste, is the most popular food in the country. Good news for the Stuff's apparent creator, businessman Mr. Fletcher, as well as all its fans (called "Stuffies"), but not so good for a little boy named Jason. Poor Jason sees the Stuff moving by itself in the fridge one night, and concludes it is alive and therefore unsafe to eat. But his parents and older brother won't listen, and become increasingly more creepy toward him as they make gradually more threatening attempts to make Jason eat it.

In the meantime, other food company owners, being put out of business by Fletcher's wonder product, hire former FBI agent turned industrial spy David "Mo" Rutherford to deduce the secret ingredients of the Stuff. To this end he woos Fletcher's ad campaign lady, Nicole, and even secures a job at the company as head of security. By happenstance he also runs into, and more or less adopts, Jason after running across the boy who is being chased by his by-now borderline homicidal family.

Together, Mo, Jason and Nicole discover the horrible truth about the Stuff. It isn't made: it bubbles right out of the very Earth itself! Worse, as Jason already knew, it is alive and takes over the minds and bodies of everyone who eats it. Finding help in the form of the mentally unhinged Colonel Spears and his militia, who believe the Stuff is a Communist plot, our heroes have to stop Fletcher from using the evil dessert to conquer the world!

'The Stuff' is a fun sendup of old B-movies like 'The Blob' and 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' with a fun cast of characters. The special effects are a hoot, too, particularly with regard to the Stuff-possessed people. When injured or killed, they "bleed" Stuff, and sometimes, the sentient white glop decides it wants to leave a host, resulting in the hilariously gross sight of characters violently puking Stuff all over. A weak human villain and some really choppy editing keep it from being truly wonderful, but overall it's a cute little flick. The DVD is well put together with an interesting and informative commentary track by director Larry Cohen.

The Stuff

I saw this movie on TV when it came out in the 80's. It always left an impression on me that it typified addictions. I bought the dvd to show the family the movie that I kept referring to. Well...special effects being what they were back then, our expectations were a little higher for both the special effects and the acting but...overall, glad I bought it. The movie is about some "stuff" that apparently is delicious. It is a biological, possible extra-terrestrial substance that was found in a cave, tasted, and marketed to the public as a new desert. The substance causes the people to crave it so much, they stop eating anything else, and eventually, the "stuff" consumes them. Its a horror story, that isn't quite so scary anymore because of the "B" quality, but gives insight to industry standards trying to "hook the public". A remake of "the stuff" might be cool, if they work on the Fx and story line a bit.Lire l'avis complet...

It's a Larry Cohen Horror film. What else can I say? Enjoy.

First of all, it was shot in Ulster County, NY, where I have a house. Second, it's a Larry Cohen film, which means it's well written and acted. Cohen takes The Blob, The Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and contemporary commercialism and comes up with a film that is entertaining and occasionally scary. Cohen is having fun with the genre.Lire l'avis complet...

Bored? Wanna laugh at a cheesy horror movie??

When a group of miners discovers a mysterious but delicious white substance bubbling up from the earth, a conglomerate markets the gooey, addictive fluff as a dessert in this tongue-in-cheek horror spoof from former NBC scriptwriter Larry Cohen. When a new product called "The Stuff" begins eating into the market share of traditional frozen desserts, the dairy industry hires former FBI agent Moe Rutherford (Michael Moriarty) to investigate the competition. With the assistance of deposed ice-cream magnate Chocolate Chip Charlie (Garrett Morris), Rutherford discovers that the substance is actually a sentient entity that takes over its victims' minds while eating away at their bodies from the inside. Meanwhile, young Jason (Scott Bloom) realizes that his family's strange behavior has something to do with the dessert product in their refrigerator that refuses to stay in its carton, and he launches a campaign to destroy the threatening confection. Soon Rutherford and Jason must team up with Nicole Kendall (Andrea Marcovicci), The Stuff's unwitting advertising mastermind, and Vietnam vet-turned-militia leader Colonel Spears (Paul Sorvino) to save America from its own sweet tooth. Sorvino and Moriarty would go on to co-star in NBC's hit police procedural, Law & Order. Icy-eyed As the World Turns hunk Brian Bloom appears alongside his brother, Scott Bloom. The Stuff's television connections also extend to cameos from Clara Peller, pitchwoman for the Wendy's "Where's the beef?" campaign, and Abe Vigoda of Barney Miller fame. Actresses Brooke Adams, Tammy Grimes, and Laurene Landon also appear in parodic commercials for the titular dessert.Lire l'avis complet...

different ideas

I saw this years ago. Most movies today are remakes or reboots of the same idea. At least this is a new and different idea. It may not be a cinematic masterpiece but at least it was different.

The Stuff (2000, DVD)

I had this movie back in the early 90's & I loved it which is why I bought it. I lost my VHS tape of it so I was glad to see it on DVD now. My only problem is, (& it doesn't have anything to do with the DVD itself) I wanted to use this DVD with a foul language filter I have in my DVD player, but it won't work with it for some reason. So I didn't get to watch it & I may resell it. It is a very good horror movie for those who don't find the foul language offensive.Lire l'avis complet...
