Great unit!

I had been trying to loose an extra 10 pounds for 5 years and then a friend recommended this book, outlining the South Beach Diet. This is such a helpful book and here's why:
Dr. A wrote the book to help you day by day. You'll never have to wake up and wonder what to eat. He gives you menus, recipies and recommendations from other dieters. He also gives you the science of why it works and reference charts so you can adapt your own tastes to the diet.
It's also great because if you fall off the diet a bit, he'll get you back on plan. He even tells you how to order at a restaurant.
I read the book, followed the diet about 90% of the time and lost 12 pounds in 5 weeks. I eventually lost the cravings for bad carbs and felt so healthy! I then passed the book to my Mom and she lost the same amount of weight.
I just had a baby and plan to jump right back on the South Beach Diet. If you buy this book, you will use it every day on your diet. I've never bought any other diet guides, but mine is right next to my stove, is bookmarked and has sauce all over it! It's sooo worth it!

Good overall information

My doctor recommended this book and diet for my husband and son who both have high cholesterol. Since I do at least half of the cooking it was important for me to read it and understand it. I found the book to be easily understood and well-written. The diet is not too difficult to follow in terms of it being logical and not one that leaves the average person feeling hungry. There is a companion book available and, in my opinion, needed to help with following through on the diet, but not needed to understand the overall diet. Because of this I rate it as Good rather than Excellent. Most people expect to use the one book alone. The companion book is called The South Beach Diet Good Eats Good Carbs Guide and is also by Arthur S. Agatston, M.D.

I would recommend reading the book to most people whether or not they plan to follow the diet. It has some good information about healthy eating and today's knowledge of carbs. On the other hand, I don't recommend the diet for everyone based on what our family doctor explained to my husband and son. He said it is a good diet, but is definitely not for everyone trying to lose weight. So as most cautions say, "check with your doctor first".

South Beach Diet

I bought the South Beach Diet book because I have been on medication for many years for high cholesterol and high blood pressure. I also had gained a lot of weight and am afraid of getting diabetes which runs in my family. I started the SB diet on Jan. 3 and lost ten pounds so far. The only thing that I dislike about the book is that Dr. A. has pre-set menu plans and he does not offer any substutions or options. For example I do not eat fish at all and he did not offer advice on the what to eat in its place. The other thing I did not care for was that most of the three meals a day required preparation (recipes for them are in the book). I tried to follow the ones I liked more often and just tried to improvise using the basic principals trying to choose low glycemic index foods. Using the low GI, good carb/bad carb principals in diet can help you loose weight, it can help stabilize blood sugars, and also help prevent heart disease. My husband who had a heart attack and quad bypass surgery in March 07 was just told by his cardiologist to go on the South Beach Diet too.
There is also another good book written prior to SB diet by Dr. Richard Podell called something like the Glycemic Index Factor (I got it from the library and not sure of the title now)It has more info and better menu choices so it is easier to follow in my opinion.

The South Beach Diet Makes Good Sense - Mostly

I bought this copy as a replacement for one I had loaned out. I didn't buy the original copy for weight loss, but because I was curious about the science behind this theory of dieting. It first appeared as just another fad diet, but if one keeps in mind that the initial carbohydrate-free period should be only temporary, the book may offer an understanding of the overload most of us devour in the form of unhealthy carbohydrates and its effects on our bodies, as well as how to combat this.
I attempted to stay on the recommended diet along with my husband, but found that I could not tolerate the lack of carbohyrdrates as well as he. Moving along to the next levels more quickly than he worked much better for my lightweight build. But for people who need to lose weight and move toward a healthier way of eating without forever feeling as though they are missing out, this seems to be a reasonable way to do it.
The book is written clearly and is easy to follow, and though the author backs up what he claims scientifically, the reader is not overloaded with medical language he cannot understand.
The recipes in this volume and in the companion cookbook are truly tasty and practical. Most recipes call for using easily obtained grocery items and staples, rather than hard-to-find specialty foods. My family enjoyed nearly all of the recipes we tried and didn't miss the extra sugar.
It's worth a look.

The Lifestyle Change That Works

I bought The South Beach Diet hardcover, softcover guide (for easy reference), and also the cookbook. I have never purchased a diet book before, but after reading some of the things about Dr. Agatston's approach I am happy that I purchased these books. I'll admit that Phase I is quite hard, and I experienced headache from the bad carb withdrawals. However, it gets easier after the first two weeks. I have digestive issues that are upset by fresh fruits and vegetables, so I am not following this guide at this time. However, when I first started this diet, I lost 10 lbs in the first two weeks. I incorporated more water into my diet and found that the benefits of water are helpful in many ways! Even though I'm officially off the band wagon, I still find that I have made positive lifestyle changes that will not change. I always buy grain breads, I've found that grain pasta tastes really good, I couldn't drink a regular soda now at all, Splenda is a deciding factor when I purchase products, and I could go on. Again, whether following the guidelines completely or just in some ways, this lifestyle change will have a positive effect on your future. I'm working on the digestive issues now, so I look forward to getting back in the swing of things now that fresh fruits and vegetables are soon to get ripe in my area. I'm very thankful for the knowledge that I've gained from the South Beach Diet!Lire l'avis complet...

Working thur the South Beach Diet book

The first part of the book is very useful and is written in an easy to understand verbage. It makes it easier to understand the good and bad foods and the impact they have on the body. I found it helpful when finding your way thru the process of, what can I eat and do to maximize my success. It walks thur the week by week dos and don'ts.
My concerns is the lack of dairy products for women who should maintain their calcium intake. The other aspect I didnt find useful were the receipes. They weren't something that busy working families would use on a daily basis. I would like to have seen them geared to feed a family of 3 or more without putting such a strain on a tight food budget.

Jumping ship from Adkins? -- Take a look at South Beach

I have been on the Adkins diet for over four years now. The diet has been very successful for me to help me keep the 30 extra pounds I use to carry off. One thing that the Adkins diet does not approach is eating complex carbohydrates.

I have since converted to the South Beach diet...It has not helped my tan, but I have been successful keeping my weight the same. Now I eat complex carbs (sweet potatoes, wheat bread, brown rice, wheat pasta) with no weight gain.

This is a great conversion diet for you adkins fans.

South Beach Diet

I wish I had not waited so long to buy this book after learning about this diet. It is a marvelous lifestyle plan. I have lost 40 pounds since mid December of 2004 (yes, that's right I started this diet just before Christmas) This diet is by far one of the healthiest I have ever encountered. It is the emphasis on good vs. bad carbs, good vs. bad fats and use of lean protien that is the key to both instant results, and LONG TERM success. I was on Atkins twice with good results but I never could quite lose the nagging thoughts about all that fat and cholesterol laden meat, eggs and cheese so I could not strictly follow it and the weight came back. With South Beach the weight has come off, stayed off and I am continuing towards my goal on a pace that is neither too fast nor to slow. My doctor is quite pleased with my weight and my vastly improved cholesterol numbers. My ultimate goal is to get off the low doses of medication I use now to keep my blood pressure under control.

South Beach takes Atkins one step further and is much more healthful than Atkins will ever be. It really is just common sense once you know the not so secret secrets. It only took 6-8 weeks before I was able to eat almost anything I wanted as long as I avoided white flour, white sugar, corn, carrots, and potatoes. That still leaves plenty of vegetables to chose from. It's almost as if once I got to a certain point that my body reset some switches and I eat less, crave less and feel excellent.
If one can get over the sugar cravings of the first two weeks there is no reason that anyone should not succeed on South Beach.

I see one major pitfall being people's past eating habits being a stumbling block to success on this diet more than any flaw with the diet itself. If one has spent a lifetime consuming little else besides bread, potatoes, pasta, sodas, baked goods etc., etc. with only an occasional salad and vegetable thrown in they will have problems. If that same diet has been filled with white flour, refined white sugar, white potatoes in every form imaginable the first two weeks will be a struggle. It does require developing a taste for more natural and non-processed foods. If you have been eating heat and eat dinner from a box for most of your life be warned that it will take a major change on your part to make this work.

Still, even small changes inspired by the book will be helpful so anyone who has been on the fence about South Beach should not hesitate to pick up a copy of the book, or recipe book or both on Ebay.

I won't be selling mine. This diet is a diet for life and I'm keeping them right here with me.

Great source for learning a better way to eat.

I've had this book for over a month and the information has helped me push past that last few pounds I need to lose. Even while on vacation! I will probably adopt this way of eating from now on, since it fits my lifestyle better than any other food regime I've used in the past. The first two weeks were the most difficult to get used to, but now that I've added back some of the foods I really like and want, it is very easy to live with. I don't feel deprived at all. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to get control of their weight.Lire l'avis complet...

The South Beach Diet

I purchased The South Beach Diet book for my profession. I am a degreed health professional and have a client who is starting this plan. She was very excited about this program and I needed to be "informed" so that I could answer her questions.

Upon reading the book, I find it to be like most "guaranteed weight loss plans" - a gimmick. This is simply another plan that deprives the participant of a lot of calories and nutrients - esp. carbohydrates in the first two weeks. Of course one would have a reduction in bodyweight - they have greatly reduced the amount of calories they were previously consuming. In addition, the lack of carbohydrates causes your body to hold less water. Note I said water not fat. Which brings me to my next issue...

The fact that Dr. Agataston states you can lose belly fat first greatly disturbs me. The human body and it's ability to sustain life on this planet is very complex and amazing. I wish we could pick, choose and refuse which bodyparts we would like to lose and/or gain fat or muscle. It just doesn't work that way. The ability to reduce bodyweight and ultimately fat is simple - consume healthy low-fat/high fiber/quality protein foods in moderation and exercise aerobically most days of the week for at least 30 minutes.

The only thing I liked about this book was the recipes. The use of fresh vs processed foods is definitely a plus.

I will be adding this book to my health library to collect dust!
