The Shining

I heard this movie did good at box office. I find it good although I do not really understand it. Jack should got out of the hotel when he started feeling himself weird. He was informed that Mr. Grady chopped up his family at that hotel, so he should have been wise to that, and get out of the hotel when strange things started happening. And I do not understand what Mr. Grady told him in the bathroom that he was always the caretaker there. And the ending complicates things more showing Jack's picture with Overlook Hotel, and 1921 written under it. Jack's cussing spiced up things. Jack Nicholson's acting is exceptional. And you never know for sure if Tony is Danny's imaginary friend or something associated with the hotel or what. And at the beginning Wendy was shaking when she was lighting her cigarette.Lire l'avis complet...

LITTLE BIG FILM

This film ranks with THE EXORCIST in that the plot is kinda pointless and the drama is low-key for the most part, but the cinematography and overall atmosphere is something to watch if you want to watch a film as you would examine a painting; just watch...Nicholson's acting is a bit stiff compared to his energetic performance in BATMAN and the film itself is waaaaaaaaaaaaay too long to add to any drama. The plot is rendered heartless due to its vision, but the vision(s) are very articulate. A good film, not a great film. I'd pay $6 or $7 just to have it around everytime I want to take in the images of this haunted house film.Lire l'avis complet...

A Kubrick Classic

The Shining is Stanley Kubrick's vision of what he thinks the Stephen King novel should be. It stars Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall who are a married couple along with their son Danny who must caretake over a secluded summer resort in Colorado. The resort has had a violent past, with a former caretaker murdering his wife and two daughters before killing himself years earlier. Now Jack, Wendy (Duvall), and Danny must spend the next five months without any outside contact with the rest of the world. Cabin Fever slowly sets in, and the evil spirits of the hotel don't help Jack much either. Jack Nicholson does a marvelous job portraying this man who is hearing and seeing the former patrons and dwellers of the hotel, and is slowly heading towards insanity.

When I first saw this movie, I didn't care for it much. That was mainly because the first time I had seen it, it was edited for TV. And there are several things that don't match the book, namely the ending. For a more true to the book version, I suggest Stephen King's The Shining, which is almost as good. After several years though, I bought the Kubrick version, and I was truly impressed. It was like I'd never seen the version that was edited. Plus I was much younger when I first seen it, and sometimes you think a movie is better than it is when you're younger (Friday The 13th Part whatever). But conversely, you don't appreciate some movies until you're older. A good case for me is this movie as well as Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange. I thought they were both strange when I had first seen them, and now I love them both. They're good stories with different twists.

What I especially like about this version of The Shining is the camera work. The opening shots of the mountains are absolutely breathtaking, as are the other aerial shots of the resort and the shots of the maze. And the shots of Jack coming into a room, especially when Shelley Duvall is behind the typewriter are chilling. But my favorite shot is when Jack is locked in the canned goods locker, with the shot from underneath him. It captures Jack at his menacing best.

Also, the music definitely fits this movie perfectly. It keeps foreshadowing Jack's slow climb to lunacy. It's actually spine tingling at times.

Although it's a little off from the book, it's definitely a great movie. I now prefer this version to Stephen King's version (although I like that one too, it's closer to his novel) because of the great acting, music, and camera work. It has stood the test of time, and Stanley Kubrick has made this movie his own. It is truly a horror classic. Anyone who likes horror movies must have this movie in their collection.

Entertaining yet erie

I have heard about The Shining movie for many years, so when I found it for a low price, I bought it. It is a good movie, except I didn't like the verbal abuse he gave to his wife and child. I know it's only a movie. I doubt I will watch it again. It wasn't as "good" as I had heard or expected. I give it 7 out of ten.Lire l'avis complet...

"RESTORED", Bah, Humbug

Well the movie in and of itself is just about as good the 10th time around as it was the first. It's a classic. That said, this particular version, this so-called "restored" edition sucks.
They must have used scissors for the update. It is missing a bunch of scenes and parts have been editied.
So, if your going to buy it, buy the original edition, and not this one.
Additionally it contains some lengthy behind the scenes of the making of the movie. While there are some good shots of Nicholson being himself and Duvall being criticised as usual, it is really not done very well at all. Nicholson appears to have a real attitude case about Duvall, and the very un professional filming is pretty lame. About as good as their "restoring".

The Shining.Jack Nicholson

It`s a classic horror that still stands the test of time.I thought it was truly scary and that the music was blood curdling. This ghost story was set in a brightly lit hotel instead of the traditional dark roomed house. The scariest part of the movie for me was when the camera was down on the little boys level while riding his bike. And he came upon the 2 little girls in the hallway who`s voices echoed "Come play with us forever and ever and ever". There were a lot of scenes that looked like something out of a nightmare. Like the blood pouring down the stairs by the elevator. Jack had problems before he went to the hotel but with his drinking and weak personality he became a portal for evil to come through and take over. Another scary scene was when Wendy picked up Jack`s papers and seeing what he had been typing realized the extent of his madness. There were a lot of great scenes. Some that even caused me to have bad dreams. I thought it was excellent and still have chills thinking about.Lire l'avis complet...

"Heres Johnny!"

Jack is a caretaker of and old Hotel in the wintertime and he and his family have to live there for several mths alone. Ever heard of cabin-fever? He gets it and is influenced by the ghosts of past caretakers to do as they did...and take care of the problems.
Jack Nicholson is perfect for this part because he can be a gentleman and also as a$$ho. It has too much profanity for my taste and unnecessary nudity but the story by Stephen King is unique and keeps you guessing the whole time.

Worth a look...
