good actors, wrong movie

Here we have Sidney Poitier miscasted as a barbaric dictator of some distant arab kingdom and Richard Widmark his usual wise-cracking character in the role of a Nordic sea captain. What were they thinking? They could have switched roles and it would have been just as ridiculous.

Also, the special effects could have been better and they used the same stuff over and over again. The plot conveniently repeats itself also so they can recycle the same scenes. Must have been a low budget movie.Lire l'avis complet...

Fun Film

"THe longShips' is a very entertaining film that's been a favorite of mine since I was akid & the dvd transfer really does it justice.... It is very well filmed by director/cinematographer JackCardiff, who specialized in action films, & it boasts a very appealing cast.... Richard Widmark is always a pleasure towatch & Sydney Poitier, long friends with his 'Long Ships' costar, delivers a strong perforance.... The surrounding cast are all effective & the film's scoreis rousing! I've long thought this one should be remade, witha more modern approach & little worry of of censorship.... The action, gore & randiness might all be embraced to a wider degree & there is plenty of room for good performers to shine---as they already have in this robust original!Lire l'avis complet...

A very captivating action movie, well worth viewing.

This has always been a personal favorite. The main characters are given to excellent performances. Rosanna Sciaffino is captivating as the wife of Sidney Poitier. One of my favorites was Oscar Homolka as Viking royalty.
The story of the "Golden Bell" is fascinating and perfectly brought to the screen. The battle action screens are very well done, No one can ever forget the "Mare of Steel."Lire l'avis complet...

Long Ships

This movie is so out of the norm that it is highly entertaining. It has lots of action and can to violent times. Lots of old time actors in it. Highly recommend.

It's about time this G R E A T film got on Region 1 DVD! What took so long?

Childhood Favorite Epic Finally on DVD

Approximately 43 years ago (I must have been around 7 years old), I went to the drive-in movies and saw this movie for the first time with my mom and dad. Since then, this movie has been my all-tme favorite. This epic movie is a smart mixture of romance, adventure, and comedy. The scenery is fantastic, and the acting is great. I loved Richard Widmark as the viking story teller whose story about a legendary golden bell happens to be true. I have always loved movies about vikings and gladiators and this movie has a compbination of both. My favorite part of the movie is the soundtrack. Never before has a soundtrack fit a movie so perfectly. I decided to buy this movie because it is my favorite.
