The Lonely Doll by Dare Wright

This was my favorite book when I was a little girl. I was so excited that I found it again and could share it with my granddaughters (8 and 4 years old) I’m thrilled that they love it too!

An angry story of domination, fear and oppression lacking love/inspiration.

This story belongs back in the 1950's and to me, is inappropriate for children in this generation. Interesting from a patriarchal, historical view, but irrelevant to children now. Yes, the pictures are charming and initially, so is the story. Until the little lonely doll and Baby Bear become defiant, belligerant and disrespectful; culminating in corporeal punishment, where the lonely doll gets her lonely bottom spanked. Threatened for crying, fears of abandonment all magically disappear with 'happily ever after' thinking; a punitive and regressive story. There is nothing inspiring nor uplifting or real in this book, except a few cute photos of toys in action.Lire l'avis complet...

charming retro children's book

Really charming children's book written by and illustrated by the photos of Ms. Dare Wright, in the 1950's. Edith is a lonely doll, who gets her wish for company, in the form of Mr. Bear and Little Bear who show up one day. Mr. Bear takes on a paternal role, and Little Bear becomes her playmate. Humans never figure into the story - the interactions are just between the 3 characters. The photos are a treat. Some parents may object to one point in the story where Mr. Bear deems it necessary to spank Edith and Little Bear for being naughty.Lire l'avis complet...

Book from my Childhood

I bought this book because I remember being absolutely fascinated by the photography. Well, when I did an internet search, I found out quite a bit about the author. Dare Wright's life is just as interesting as her photos. I'm glad I found this nostalgic book!Lire l'avis complet...

The Lonely Doll by Dare Wright

I purchased THE LONELY DOLL as a present for a friend. It is one of my favorite books, and even though it is available new at the bookstores, I bought it from ebay for the ease and convenience of having it delivered to my home. I consider it as one of the best books that combines photo illustration and storytelling ever published. It is a classic that should be in every library that children have access to. Dare Wright was a consummate artist and storyteller, and it is well worth the money to invest in this timeless volume.Lire l'avis complet...

I read this as a girl, and find it interesting to reread as an adult. Like many mothers, I'm not reading this to my daughter -- a little weird.

Captivated by THE LONELY DOLL

Given the time this book was originally published (1957), the artistic photographs taken by the model/turned photographer, Dare Wright, are evocative not only of the beauty of the time period (interiors/clothing/etc), but of the artist's own biography. I highly suggest reading The Secret Life of the Lonely Doll: The Search for Dare Wright by Jean Nathan. Although Nathan's book may not be the full story on D. Wright, the background information does provide you with the information to fully enjoy the original stories and photographs.Lire l'avis complet...

The Lonely Doll

What an adorable book. The photos are priceless- looking at them took me back many years. A simple story, told beautifully. This is a great book for young children, especially those little girls, who like myself when I was little, are fascinated by dolls. I gave this as a gift to a friend, and she enjoyed it as well. Delightful !!Lire l'avis complet...
