Original Version is By Far The Best!

Many of the plot elements of the original THE HILLS HAVE EYES have become staples, even cliches, of the horror genre. It is important to remember that this movie did it FIRST --- and they did it without any special effects. Yes, there is blood and violence, but the horror does not derive from the over-use of gore, or even from the fact that the flesh-eating mutants are hideous monsters (they aren't particularly hideous-looking). The most horrifying thing about this movie is the lengths to which people will go to protect their families. At the beginning, the audience sees that the cannibals living in the mountains are literally starving, abandoned and ignored by civilized society. The family whose car and RV breaks down in the desert is not exactly The Brady Bunch. Dad is a sexist ex-cop carrying two guns and lots of ammo; the teenaged siblings constantly snipe at each other; Mom doesn't seem all that bright. In fact, their German Shepherd dog is smarter and braver than they are, managing to push one of the cannibals off a cliff to his death AND bring home the cannibals' walkie-talkie. At this point, the surviving family members in the RV stop screaming and start using their brains to fight back. This is another aspect of THE HILLS HAVE EYES that I like very much by comparison to newer films. In most newer horror films, there is no use fighting back; the monster easily picks off everyone one by one, leaving perhaps a single survivor out of a pack of six. In THE HILLS HAVE EYES, some people live and some die. The ones who live are usually the ones who make smart choices and fight back...and yet, the subtext shows that they lose a bit of their humanity because of the violence they must commit, just as Ruby, one of the mutants, demonstrates that she has retained her humanity when she saves a baby's life --- by killing her own brother, an act that clearly causes her grief. Don't let the clothes and hairstyles fool you; this is much more than a cheesy 1970s drive-in film. It's the story of ordinary, flawed people reacting to extraordinary, desperate circumstances.Lire l'avis complet...

Wes Craven in his prime = true horror

There are many horror movies out there that you can watch and say to yourself, "There's no way that could ever happen in real life!" The Hills Have Eyes is not one of those movies. This is Wes Craven's third film as writer and director, at a time when the horror genre was becoming more and more popular. An intense plot throughout and real-life horror makes this a great movie, although the characters are a bit corny and the make up/gore had a few flaws (or was lacking), but it was made in '77 and has that exact ambiance to it. Of course the remake was made to be more gory and horrifying, but it never really outdid any other horror movies. However, the original was definitely a remarkable film for its time, a classic Craven movie that was inspired by Tobe Hooper's Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and paved the way for Wes to create Freddy Krueger and Scream. True horror fans should definitely own this.Lire l'avis complet...

Keep Your Eyes Closed

"Poor" is a generous rating of this movie. I do not even wish to go as far as to describe the plot. This movie is full of unentertaining violence and disgusting, brutal events. A scene of a mutated monster drinking breast milk from a young woman after ripping a baby from her arms nauseated me. A scene of one of these male "people" raping a young teenage girl while her family is killed in front of her made me turn the movie off. There's scary and then there's irresponsible attempts at entertainment; this is one of them.Lire l'avis complet...
