Old but still scary

Frightmeister Vincent Price shines in this 1963 release, "The Haunted Palace", a dark tale of sorcery, possession, and an undying curse..
Price plays the dual roles of Joseph Curwen, a warlock dwelling in a forbidding palatial estate in 18th century Arkham, Mass., and his great-grandson Charles Dexter Ward, who inherits the accursed palace 110 years later. Seems the old witch is out for revenge on the good folks of Arkham for burning him alive, and pronounces a curse on them, vowing to avenge his death upon the townspeople and their descendants. Enter Charles Dexter Ward and his gorgeous wife Anne (played by Debra Paget in her last movie role), who have received the deed to the palace as an inheritance. Despite the pleading of the locals to forget the inheritance and leave, the couple move in, and Ward is soon possessed by the spirit of his ancestor, Curwen, and...well, you can guess what THAT leads to...
The great Lon Chaney Jr. also stars as Simon Orne, the warlock's gruesome helper. Frank Maxwell plays Dr. Willet; Leo Gordon is Edgar Weeden; and Elisha Cook Jr. is Peter Smith, all descendants of the original cursed townsfolk. The story is credited to Edgar A. Poe but is actually based on a short story by horror king H.P. Lovecraft. All in all a spine-tingling hour and a half.

Underrated Poe-Corman Thriller

At the time of its release, it may have been passed up in favor of The Raven, the last Corman-Poe movie to feature Richard Matheson as screenwriter. That was then though. This is now. This tape did not blur or fuzz. Nor did it skip ahead at any point. Plus, this film features an iconic yet underrated opening scene with a great musical score that the previous films in the cycle did not employ. I wonder why.Lire l'avis complet...

Price and Lovecraft..a stunning combination!

Being a fan of both Vincent Price and H.P. Lovecraft, this is one of the most stylishly creepy films of the era whan it was made. It takes some liberties with the story, "The case of Charles Dexter Ward" but Price's transformation from the benign Ward to his evil ancestor Joseph Curwen is extremely well done. I still wish I had that portrait of Price as Curwen hanging over the castle mantelpiece and wonder if Price who was an artist actually painted it..must check the credits again to see.Lire l'avis complet...
