Really a Witch!

I bought this book to take on a trip two days before the trip - but it was so great I had read most of it before the trip even started. I couldn’t put it down. I loved the book in that it pointed out the faults of the fashion industry - having models who are a size zero instead of the twelve most women are, being fashion obsessed and thinking the more it cost the better it is. The values are warping our young women (and some of the older ones who should know better!). The ending was a slight disappointment - you expected her to "win" in the industry - but she wins in what she really wanted to do all the time (you’ll have to read to find out what it is – I can’t give everything away). It is a great book to point out the priorities people should have - that friends, family and lovers should come before success and being really successful does not necessarily make you happy and if you're not happy you spend your time making everyone around you miserable. Overall it was an entertaining book with a message. I'd give it a 4.5 (above good, but slightly below excellent).Lire l'avis complet...

Book is much much better than the movie

Artful, honest and endearing story of urban survival.
Although I am a man, in my 50s, and has nothing to do with the culture, I relate to Andrea's experience in the working world and her encounters, response and apparent lack of humanity in the feudal hierarchy that we constantly throw ourselves to in whatever name we choose to call it - making it, climbing the corporate ladder, etc. Why did it take so long for someone to write this book. I also liked it that in the end, she found the courage to walk away on her own term, which I believe the author did in real life as well.
The book was written in a voice we have all used in our heads at different points in time.

I could only relate to the villain -- is that wrong?

The best part of "The Devil Wears Prada" is its cover. I'm not a big fan of chick-lit to begin with, but this specimen takes the cake. The main character, Andy, is whiny and one-dimensional. I kept waiting for her to grow a spine and when she does, it's anticlimactic, making this book really boring.

What bothers me most is that readers are supposed to be sympathetic to Andy's plight of running seemingly pointless errands for a year in exchange for a job recommendation. Here's why:

1. If you hate a job, quit. Find another way to achieve your dreams. People do it every day. But don't worry about our heroine; after spending time at a job she hates and getting no published work out of the deal, she manages to land a job at another magazine!

2. While she runs errands, we're supposed to feel bad that Andy's "forced" to wear designer clothing and shoes, which she snags for free at work. We're also expected to feel sorry when she ruins the clothing and needs to change into different designer duds. Did I mention that she also gets her hair and makeup done?

3. Andy is supposed to represent normal women (you know, all us normal 5'11", 120lb women), yet I couldn't buy "affordable" Anne Klein shoes on her budget. Maybe she shops on eBay, but I doubt it. I couldn't relate to the character and didn't really care to try.

4. We're supposed to feel sympathy for someone who ignores her family, best friend (and roommate), and boyfriend because she's busy at a job she hates. Oh, but she can spend time with another guy, because it's work-related.

In fact, the only strong character in this book is the one we're supposed to hate: the boss, Miranda. When taking Miranda's attitude out of the equation, I actually admire her. I mean, she has a staff of people doing her bidding; she makes time for her kids, and she's a highly-influential female in the fashion industry. Very impressive. Most women are still trying to find that balance.

I don't recommend this book for anyone. It's just not worth the time.

Small Town Girl Meets High-Pressure Corporate Life

Funny,insightful, and keeps your interest.

Written from the viewpoint of Andrea (Andy), a Brown Ivy League graduate who wants to write for the New Yorker magazine; but, pursues this dream sideways stumbling and bumbling into the intense world of high-powered fashion and the people who drive it. Unfortunately, Miranda, the Chief Editor at Runway magazine, represents all too many A-type personality executives who run major corporations. For the uninitiated as Andy, all appears unreal, unneeded, and a stressful shock to regular life and relationships. The story pulls you laughing at times through the unreality of high pressure business and its demanding, unsympathetic bosses who expect no other commitment other than to your job and them. Lauren Weisberger exposes the reader to a fashion world, often dreamed about "... a job a million girls would want;" but, from a perspective little expected and few understand.

For a first novel, "The Devil Wears Prada" is well-written, anecdotal, humorous with good character development. One gets to feel the emotions, challenges, and dilemmas Andy faces in this unexpected world of fashion for one who is fashion challenged and desires to be a serious writer. Long-time relationships spin out of control. Loyalties get challenged. Tough decision must be faced and made. Lauren has written a real winner as her first.

Awesome Read!

I LOVE the movie and never knew there was a book until one day I decided to watch the outtakes & deleted scenes. When I found out there was a book I just had to read it because the book is usually 10 times better than the movie. I was not let down! The movie is missing so much that is covered in the book. I really felt bad for Andrea, Miranda is 100 times worse in the book than the movie. If you haven't read the book yet DO IT NOW! You will really enjoy it! Especially the ending!Lire l'avis complet...
