OVERRATED!!!!

I had never seen The Departed and of course I heard a lot of great things about it and it did win the Oscar for Best Picture, so I was really looking forward to a wonderful experience. The beginning first quarter was difficult (I almost stopped the DVD which is something I've never done) to watch because people cops/everyone just don't behave this way or speak this way, not even a low-class gang banger! None of the characters were likeable on any level, there is no one to root for or engage with, and whether it's literature or films these are important connections that need to be made. And then there were too many plot holes that could have been easily amended, but Scorsese chose not to. It stretched credibility. This is supposed to be a realistic portrayal of detectives and is based loosely on actual people and events. And then you have the camera work! From what I've read about the very best directors, camera movement should be used sparingly, but Scorsese on this film went to extreme levels of camera movements throughout the film. It not only was distracting but it definitely harmed any sense of realism. Acting! You figure with so many talented and experienced actors there wouldn't be any fault. Unfortunately accents were, I guess, a requirement. With the exception of Nicholson and DiCaprio the rest of the cast chose to use a thick heavy Irish/Bostonian accent and the problem is they just weren't convincing and too many times they would drop the accent for a sentence or two and then pick it up again. It was an unnecessarily bad decision by actors and director to have them use heavy accents, obviously the actors couldn't maintain the accents, had they followed Nicholson and DiCaprio is example they would have been more convincing using a subtle accent. Also choosing to go with heavy accents was almost laughable in that I had the sense they just got off the boat at Ellis and it was almost like a parody, though these characters we're born here. And then the last three quarters of the film was pretty much the same but the difference is that the overall tone and pacing finally eased-up and was far less disjointed. I rarely if ever review films, but The Departed was such an unexpectedly bad movie I had to put my two cents in to give everyone who hasn't seen the film the heads-up not to expect too much as the film is extremely overrated!Lire l'avis complet...

Scorsese's Best Since Goodfellas

I've always liked Martin Scorsese's movies, he has done several types of movies and has shown that he definitely knows how to make good movies. When you see his name stamped on a movie, you know you're going to get quality work. And he's shown his versatility in directing unrelated films like Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, After Hours, The Last Waltz, Taxi Driver, The Last Temptation of Christ, The Color Of Money, Raging Bull, The Aviator, the list goes on. But what Martin is known best for are his gangster movies. From Mean Streets to Goodfellas, Casino, Gangs of New York, and now The Departed, he shows he knows how to make gangster movies. My personal favorite from Martin is Goodfellas (I've seen it a dozen times, and I think it's right up there with The Godfather for best gangster/mob movie of all time), but as good as Goodfellas is, The Departed gives it a run for its money. The thing I like about Martin Scorsese the best is he has a vision. He knows what works for him, and he stays with what he knows. And if he decides to go a different way, he definitely does his homework. He knows cinematography as well and knows what will look great on the big screen, and it looks just as great in the living room after you pop the movie in.

The Departed is an excellent movie with an excellent cast. Jack Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen, and Alec Baldwin all put forth performances so real that you believe that they are the characters. DiCaprio, Damon, and Nicholson steal the show with their great performances in great roles; but it's Wahlberg, Sheen, and Baldwin who complete the movie with their excellent supporting roles. Sometimes you see an excellent cast fall flat on their face (Ocean's Twelve), but Scorsese doesn't let any egos get in the way. He does an excellent job of keeping everyone within their own character, and the result is outstanding.

The Departed is similar to the movie Donnie Brasco with Al Pacino and Johnny Depp, but it's way more complicated. Complicated in a good way. It takes a while for everything to play out (it runs in at two and half hours), but it all comes together, and I'm glad Martin didn't skip out on the storytelling by making the movie shorter. I honestly don't know what could've been cut out. It's about a mole who gets inside the mob while reporting to police officers in order to bring down mob boss Frank Costello (Nicholson). Only problem is that he has a cop that's supposed to be on his side who's reporting back to Frank, so Frank keeps eluding the heat. Meanwhile, each side is trying to figure out who the mole is on the other side. There are all kinds of twists and turns which make this movie truly original and great, and it keeps you guessing all the way up to the climactic end.

It's nice to see that Martin finally got his Oscar nod. I cannot think of anyone in Hollywood who has done so much for the movie industry, and yet kept getting snubbed year after year. He finally got what was coming to him, just like the guys who get whacked in his movies, but in a good way. Goodfellas is still my favorite Scorsese movie (favorite movie period), but The Departed is right up there. I was actually kind of surprised to see that he won the Oscar for Departed; not because of the quality of the movie, but because of past snubbings. I thought maybe Scorsese's movies were too violent for the Academy. They finally got it right. Thank you.

Nicholson, DeCaprio and Damon in a Crime Caper = wickedly good

Excellent, engaging, twisty and wickedly good tale of a Boston neighborhood, a crime boss (Nicholson) pitted against the police force, with each planting their own shill in each other's ranks. Can't go wrong with this cast, the script is tight, the photography captivating.Lire l'avis complet...

Scorsese does it again

This movie is an all out effort from the cast, the director, and everyone involved. The movie is made great by the performances of their actors through the direction of Martin Scorsese. Leonardo Dicaprio gives another great performance, and continues to build his credible and successful acting career. Nickolson creates a good bad guy that we have not seen since Batman(1989). Mark Wahlberg steals the scences in which he is in, with all his witty dialogue. Although, this movie is not Scorsese's best, it is among one of the best out there in this genre. Scorsese was able to take an adaptation of a Hong Kong crime thriller and make it his own. He shows us again that he is still one of the greatest directors of our time. The running time is a little long, but you'll hardly notice as the movie hardly slows down. This movie is a must own for anyone who is a fan of ganster films and a Martin Scorsese fan. Overall, this movie is excellent and should be a good film to watch.Lire l'avis complet...

Could be Movie of the Year

The Departed

I know it's only February but The Departed gets 6 thumbs up from me and gets my vote for Movie of the Year.

Great cast, amazing script, twists, turns, action, excitement. This movie is perfect in every way. It's an edge of your seat thrill-ride from beginning to end.

DiCaprio, Damon, Nicholson, Wahlberg, Baldwin, and so on and so forth. The cast is so spectacular this movie just had no possibility of being bad. Martin Scorcese will win awards this year. That's a guarantee!

A final note though... this movie is rated 18A for a reason, it's got plenty of violence and extremely harsh language. It's definitely not recommended for anybody under the age of 16.

Final Verdict:

5/5

Worth buying?: Absolutely, The Departed is a must own.

IF YOU FIND THIS REVIEW HELPFUL PLEASE REMEMBER TO VOTE. Thank you.

GREAT, GREAT Movie!!

This is one of the best movies I've ever seen. Matt Damon and Leo Dicaprio are just awesome. Throw in Mark Walberg and you've got yourself an Academy Worthy movie. Maybe that's why it won Picture of the Year! So good. This movie has action and makes you think. However, while it has twists all over, it's not so much that you have to watch it two or three times to get it. It's easy to follow. The actors are perfect. Even Alec Baldwin and Martin Shene are brilliant. The plot and settings are fantastic. What a GREAT MOVIE!Lire l'avis complet...
