Lets kill the Director~ we see how he Plans to do it~
this is slow paced compared to newer killer for hire movies (the Jackal) but this was a new idea when it was made. We see a group of French try to kill DeGaul in this KILLER for hire plot. simple now we see them hire a man (Edward Fox) as a nameless man named Jackal and we see the step by step plot of how he plans to do it...with out totally seeing his final brilliant way he sneaks the gun into a police covered area. it is well acted and we keep watching it despite a little too much details of the police men hired to find the Jackal. But in it's day it was top edge thrills and police detective work to find this nameless faceless man~ We love the ID changes by Fox as he carefully manipulates his way into the right place and time to SHOOT his victim. and hot on his trail is the police. nice detective work. a fun watch but at 2 hours and 23 minutes it drags a bit. but worth the watch to see the clever way the killer finally ends up so near his intended target.
also see The Jackal. I give it a solid 6 out of 10.

Still not the original .....
This was a quite entertaining picture. Well done, probably in the European fashion. More plot and acting, less "action". Unlike the typical newer Hollywood shows, with lots of dynamic action and "shoot 'em ups".
I thoroughly enjoyed the show, even though I already knew the general plot line. It will go into my keeper files, to be watched over and over, unlike the Bruce Willis version, which is already gone.
The downer is that I distinctly remember certain scenes from the many times I have seen this film over the years. Two versions now, and I am STILL looking for the "original".
Any help?

INCREDIBLE 'NAIL-BITER' w/ BRITISH COOL !!!
"THE DAY OF THE JACKAL" tells of the attempted assassination of French President Charles De Gaulle in June, 1963.
Largely based on a true story, a group of terrorists known as the OAS plots the President's demise and fails and goes into hiding.
They then choose a mysterious Englishman known as the JACKAL to make the next attempt; the film following him thru the many steps he takes (phony ID, gun, car, etc) to plan the job.
Extremely thorough, he is pitted against the French police and their vast intelligence apparatus; embodied in a seemingly befuddled Columbo-type character, but really an ingenious police detective who is just as able as his querey.
Done in vintage 1960's style, our stars do not benefit from the INTERNET, otherwise the story would not take as long, but there is not a dull moment.
A longtime fan of this film, I am happy it is FINALLY on DVD, and as usual at a BARGAIN PRICE !!!!
ANYONE WANT A 'GENTLY USED' VHS COPY ???

4th time I've watched it.
This is a classic 1960s spy film. By today's standards it may seem a bit primitive. But it gets the job done. And the title rocks.

The Day of the Jackal
Based on true history, this political thriller finds a French paramilitary group that is disgusted with President Charles De Gaulle's decision to free
French Algeria, decide to assinate the French President. To carry out their
task, the group hires a British hit man known only as "The Jackal" (Edward
Fox). The plan is discovered by French police and soon lead investigator Lebel
(Michel Lonsdale) is on the trail of "The Jackal. Suspenseful ending as the
Jackal trys to complete his mission, which Lebel is equally trying to prevent.
Great classic political thriller to watch.Lire l'avis complet...

The REAL jackal.
This film depicts the story as one imagines it would have happened---fewer Hollywood gimmicks than the more recent remake.
