Boethius (480-524 AD) wrote this work while jailed for "conspiracy," a capital crime for which he will be executed... not surprisingly, it will invoke the treatment of Socrates' in Plato's 'Apology' and specifically references Plato, Aristotle and the neo-Platonists, among classical sources...

Boethius' journey is from the darkness of despair to the enlightenment of grasping the truth and goodness of Divine Wisdom, culminating in the famous argument that humans are free even though God has foreknowledge... a dialogue format is utilized between 'Boethius' and Lady Philosophy, with the latter slowly and incrementally exposing Boethius to proper understanding... her role is not unlike Diotima in Plato's 'Symposium'...

Profundity has been realized in prison on many occasions, and this work exemplifies how restricted physical freedom can translate into intellectual emancipation...
