A Citizen's Obligations to Country

"The Bill of Obligations: The Ten Habits of Good Citizens, by Richard Haass
I have often wondered: "Bill of Rights,” did our founding fathers forget the “Bill of Responsibilities?"
For me, Richard highlighted an American problem: Throughout our history, Americans have referenced our Bill of Rights in just about any political discussion; understandable for it is a critical component of America’s government. Although, the founding fathers considered a Bill of Responsibilities, it rhymed with British requirements to “house soldiers,” so it was set aside. Richard describes a citizen’s obligations to country, he reminds us of our better selves, by highlighting our sometimes lack of civility in dealing with our community and our routine lack of respect for those who chose the challenges of government service. For me, Richard, at this heartbeat in time, allowed me to focus on the current over-emphasis on political affiliation, at the expense of respect and love of country. Haass’ call for civility and respect of our fellow Americans is a critical voice because our everyday example from the political professionals who fought to ensure control of congress by disregarding the quality, qualifications, and capability of their candidates to lead if elected.
Every American needs to read and consider adapting “The Ten Habits of Good Citizens.”
