Astounding functionality and computing power! But not beginner-friendly.

I bought this calculator for my advanced level Calculus and Physics courses. Its functionality and computing power are astounding. I've used a TI-84 and TI-83 in the past, and the possible functions of those calculators pale in comparison to the TI-89 Titanium. It does almost everything I could want it to; it solves equations, differentiates, integrates (both definite and indefinite integrals), and graphs in three dimensions--slowly but that's to be expected, it's only a calculator. This last function is extremely valuable in multi-variable calculus. The screen is black/white but can still produce images with nice contrast. The main difference between this one and the TI-nspire is that the nspire has a colored display and a nice input keyboard, however, it lacks the computing power and 3-d graphing features of the TI-89 Titanium. I am certainly not a beginner with TI calculators, but sometimes this calculator can still confuses me. My biggest complaint would be that it is NOT BEGINNER FRIENDLY. A second complaint would be about the input, which is sometimes cumbersome, but still effective (the input is no different than that of a TI-84 or 83). Another thing to note would be that most of the buttons on the TI-89 Titanium are placed differently than on the TI-84 or 83. I would recommend this calculator to anyone that is adept with graphing calculators or needs the extra functionality of the 89. Also, the price is not exorbitant, or even much more than the other TI graphing calculators.Lire l'avis complet...

TI-89 Titanium calculator

My primary intent in bidding on this item (TI-89 Titanium hand held calc) was in having an instrument that could create 3D graphs. The unit works well in that regard and you can rotate the finished 3D graph about a vertical or horizontal axis as well....but you cannot graph in cylindrical or spherical coordinates as is required in many engineering and physics problems and to the best of my knowledge there are no programs that you can download into the TI-89 (you can hook it up to your computer and print out graphs with it or simply study them on your desk top screen) that would allow you to do this. Aside from that the unit has performed very well although in honesty I have not had time to fully explore all of the things it can do because I have had too many 3D graphs to have to make for a project. But the TI-89 is crammed with a lot of features for the money.Lire l'avis complet...

Your new best friend in Calc class

I started my calc class with a TI-83 Plus that I used for all my other math classes. It was fine in the beginning but I felt I was wasting a lot of time doing "busy" work. This TI-89 does all the busy work for me! I now have more time to work on the actual problem that other stuff such as finding the derivatives and solving equations. This is a great handy tool to check over your work to make sure you have not made any careless errors. I have never used the Titanium version but see no downfall to using the original version. Here are some pros and cons that I feel go with this calculator.

Pros: Derivatives, Solving Equations, Low Battery Meter.

Cons: Price (if purchased new), Graphs can be a little hard to view.

My overall opinion: If you are planning on taking a Calculus course try to pick up one of these used and become familiar with it because it will seem very foreign at first. And don't replace this with knowledge, you still need to know the basics in your head in order to succeed in the class!

Works great for my high school son

Works great for my son who is in high school. Apparently whatever model the teacher uses has a few keys that are in different spots so not every function works using the exact same keys, but that has not been a problem for my son. However, if your child's teacher uses a specific model I would suggest getting that model instead so that learning would be easier for someone not as technologically inclined as my son.Lire l'avis complet...

Excellent Value

My daughter is taking Calculus next year in high school and (of course) the teacher required the students to have the TI-89 calculator. I was not exactly pleased that I would have to purchase yet another calculator since we already purchased the TI-83 and TI-84 for previous math courses.

The calculator is a very cool piece of technology. It works beautifully and will (I hope) be useful for my daughter through her college years. It has many other features that you download easily from the Internet to do other types of functions, such as finances, statistics, and an organizer (to name a few). I also found out that it has AP Calculus test questions pre-loaded on it, which will be useful at the end of this school year.

Our vendor was efficient and quick to send us the product.

Even though I really didn't want to purchase yet another calculator, I am extremely pleased with my purchase. This calculator functions more like a mini-computer, and with the Internet interface, my daughter will be able to use this for any engineering, math or science class in college.

The Best Symbolic Manipulation Graphing Calculator

This calculator not only can plot graphs, but it can also solve mathematical equations with symbolic manipulation. This is great for engineers like me who don't have lots of time to spare making calculations and just want the math to be done quickly in order to complete a design.

Believe it or not it also has flash, and users can also design their own programs in Assembly language or Basic. It has the Motorola 68000, a great and reliable processor and I love its assembly language which in fact is taught in Most colleges for Computer Engineering Students.

It has the power of a TI-92 or the newer symbolic manipulation computer style graphing calculators but in the size of a regular TI-83 or TI-86.

After weeks of research this is in fact the best calculator ever.

The only drawback: professors might not allow you to use it on exams. It is so powerful that it is illegal in some exam sessions! What else do you want?

Trouble deciding what calculator to choose?

I reccomend getting a TI 89 Titanium graphing calculaor;i f you plan on going into advanced classes or programs. For example, a program that exceeds basic algebra 2, this is the calculator to use especially if you plan on going or, may later decided to go for a four year degree. Also, if you want to never worry about having to purchase a calculator ever again (not including physical damage that may occur). A TI 89 Titanium graphing calculator is the best decision you can make. Also, the basic TI 89 of any model works just as great as the titanium; however, you may need to instal certain programs or want to add que notes to reflect on. The titanium has the most space to add all these features; which ensures enough space to add just about anything someone would need. Therefore, the TI 89 titanium Graphing Calculator is a much better decision because it gives you plenty of memory and the functions are much easier to use, the shortcuts are much simpler to find. I wish I would have invested more into one.(It's always a good idea to have a back up calculator as well, so purchasing an older model of the 89's would be a smart decision as well, because you never know when an accident may occur; once you have a little extra cash that is).Lire l'avis complet...

Powerful calculator

This is a used item of course, so the only thing guaranteed is the calc itself. I'm loving the computer algebra system on it; taking DE and Linear Algebra this semester and never knew how much of a time saver it was. Solves for x, does operations for polynomials, factors, integrates and d/dx functions, trig extpansion, etc. Only thing thats kinda a pain is matrices, but you get used to it. Wish I had this earlier. Lot of other calcs have CAS, but this is at great price too.

this website lists a lot of the features and gives you a good idea of what this calc can do and gets you started using fast as well:

replace all the d0ts and c0m

Good calc for engineer studies

It's good calculator after half year of experoence with TI-83 Plus. Much easier to use and as it always shows sentences inputted, it's easy to find otu if you made a mistake in input.
I bought this product cause my old TI-83 Plus couldn't work with complex numbers in matrix. As I am studying electronics it is relatively important feature.Lire l'avis complet...

Perfect for the engineering student

If your studying engineering this is a must have, It has all the features that you need to succeed. with it's build in computer algebra system it can evaluate and simplify expressions, and display them as they would be written by hand thus making test easier. It returns all of the equations for a quadratic variable making it the ideal cheat-a-lator. well worth your time and effort to learn how to use this jewel.Lire l'avis complet...
