Fits the Bill

I was looking for a good all around lens for my Canon EOS 1Ds, Mark II and this lens fits that bill. Auto-focus is fast and accurate. It's a nice light lens and a good value. I'm grateful that the former owner took such good care of it. One knock I've heard is lens creep. I have not found that at all. It's pretty darned sharp under most circumstances. However, I'm finding that the VC feature isn't as good as on the Tamron 18 - 270 mm zoom I have for my 7D. Maybe I'm just spoiled by the 18 - 270. If I hold the camera with only one hand, (I do that at times to shade the lens or hold something out of the frame) the VC isn't quite as good. Otherwise, with a typical two hand stance, it works well. I'm glad I got this lens and I intend to keep it.Lire l'avis complet...

Nice lens for different projects

This is a very good lens to carry if you have a smiple project and you don't want to carry many lenses. It is exactly why I got this lens. Now there are some good things and some not very good things about this lens.

Pro:
1. Versatile and lightweight
2. Wide range between wide angle and tele (mostly if you're doing full frame or film cameras) not so much in APC and small digital.
3. Good camera manufacturer
4. Cheap compared to Nikon lenses (which I love very very much)

Con:
1. Aperture (lens opens up at 5.3 or something) which does not make it a very fast lens especially for low light or sports photography (i do lots of car racing photographry). Of course I compare this to my fast f:2.8 lenses from Nikon that cost almost $2000 each
2. Lens is considered soft which means you won't get the same quality or sharpness you can expect from a Nikon lens
3. In digital bodies like the D80 which has the small APC sensor, you won't get the full image or the true wide angle of 28mm.

great lens but heavy for its size

This is a very good lens for fullframe cameras, works well on subframes that have drive-motors as well...just one caveat with it, it's not light. Very sharp and reasonably fast and clear for a superzoom but it's a pocket full of change.

you can check the specs on slrgear.com
this lens is 550g vs 430g for the Tamron 18-250 which is the equivalent lens on a Sony with body-IS

And that extra 120 grams is really noticeable on a light camera.
It doesn't help much on a heavy camera :)
Seriously adds to the inertia.

But the IS is very good, it doesn't vignette much like the T18-250 on a subframe...it's a good all-around carry. As long as you don't mind carrying it :)

It certainly makes WAY more sense than the Canon 28-300 EF-L IS at 1670g and $2250 retail.

I would be satisfied if I don't have xxbis

I am too comfort with the single lens on small DC. So even though I bought a DSLR, I had dreamed a super zoom lens for a long time. Most of time, I was frustrated by the reviews that always say a superzoom is not possible without great compromise. But after months waiting and searching, I think this is the one I like most. Here is why: 1) It cover up to 300mm, which is probably the highest focal length that people can handle without a tripod support. 2) I have xxbis, which is worse than none. But it is white color too attractive, so I don't like to shoot with it on the street. This one is pure black (though at 300mm, it is the same length as xxbis+1.4X II extender). 3) last but not least, it has VC. This is really critical feature. Please believe me, after using various lenses for nearly a year, I feel the IS is even more important than a big apearture I bet when seeing this, some people will say, "Hi, it can't freeze motion". Sure. You may be right for your case. But for mine, I mostly take portrait photography and night shoot, not action shoot. However, eventually I am selling it now. Why? First reason is to save money but the second reason is that I own xxbis first. Its IQ is still not comparable than xxbis's. When I shoot anything, I am sure I will say in my mind, "it would be better if I use xxbis..." Sometimes, you desperately want something until you get it.Lire l'avis complet...

Surprising…great value for the money.

For a 3rd party lens, I was surprised at the quality of the pictures. When I go back and look at my pictures, I will see one and think, this is a good picture and when I look at the info on the picture I find that it was taken with the Tamron lens, not my Nikon lens! I am well pleased, for the money.I shoot with A Nikon D90 and a Nikon D7000. Just fyi…I get better pictures using FX lens on my DX camera!…crazy!

Good but slow.

This lens has a great focal range and is a good choice if you want to take only one, all purpose, walk around lens. What surprised me is how slowly the autofocus works. It is tortuga. Snail's pace. So don't plan on any fast action shots. Other than that, this one is a good all purpose choice.Lire l'avis complet...

Great walk around for events

Not the sharpest lens in the bag but definitely the most useful. Quick to focus, good image stabilization, light weight and size makes it a valuable tool. I purchased this to augment my 'very heavy' 'L' Series Canon lens. I take candid pics of people in events and this lens is more that I expected. It is a keeper.Lire l'avis complet...

Tamron 28-300 with VC

Looking for a versitile telephoto zoom lens that not only takes great clear pictures in low lights on a budget that happens to also be Yankee Stadium acceptable? Well I was! And it is! I needed something with a wide zoom range with Vibration Control. I've owned other Tamron lenses including the 18-200mm lens, and liked them just fine. The 28-300 VC has surpased the others. I recently shot a dance performance with this lens on my 30D. I was able to take clear vibrant pictures in low lights WITHOUT a flash. While the ISO was cranked to 1600, I was quite impressed with the fast action shots I was able to take. From dancers in mid air flight to poses on the floor, this lens was fast enough to capture the moment. At times from 250-300 the lens was not fast enough to capture quick movement and blurred the shot, but up to 200 it was quite effective.

There were certainly moments I wished the lens was faster but for this range in this quality I don't think it could have been more effective. AND PRICE, let's not forget! for less than $500 I have range from 28-300 and an amazing vibration control system that sure proves to be effective. You can see the picture stabilize as you depress the button halfway to shoot your moment. The reviews raved over the effectiveness of the VC system created by Tamron.

Oh and for you baseball fans, Yankee Stadium accepts lenses that are no longer than 5" in length into the stadium....and yes they do check. This lens is just 3.9" in length! Capture great Yankee moments up close and in action.

If you are looking for an effective all around lens that takes clear, vivid colored pictures that will correct your hand shake and fits better into a budget, I highly recommend this lens. I have enjoyed taking pictures in different circumstances and lighting. From outdoor foliage to indoor dance, this lens has proved to versitle and necessary in my lens collection.

Not a Nikon, but a good affordable 2nd stringer until I win the lottery!

So far I am just fooling around with it. The pictures seem sharp enough to my eye. The zoom is a little rough but not a deal breaker. Same for the noise the VC system generates. Those issues aren't too bad to manage.

It will take a little more shooting to decide whether the slow response time is going to be an issue, I could see that it could be a problem for a professional who needs to catch that look between the bride and groom while cutting the cake. For me, I may miss a few family candid shots, but on the opposite side of the spectrum, the long range of the lens allows me to catch other shots that I wouldn't have had a chance at before,

Right now, I would say, I definitely got my money's worth. It will be a great carry around lens. When the slow auto focus starts to get on my nerves, then I may think of upgrading to the Nikon version for 3 times the money. Until I can afford that one, this is a respectable substitute except in the most demanding situations.

Superb Performance in an Affordable Package

Excellent lens for the price--one that can stay on the camera. No more swapping out lenses. Not too large, either--nice and compact when locked at wide angle. I like that Tamron provided a lens hood and offers six years of warranty. And from what I see online about Tamron, customer support is awesome.

These are the things I like best about this lens:

Huge focal range of 28-300mm goes from true wide angle to really close-up
Close focus distance is under 20 inches throughout the zoom range
Zoom lock
Vibration control
Solid feeling with smooth operation
Manual and autofocus
Quick to focus with no hunting
Great pictures
