A fun reminder of a time past.

Admittedly this is a niche product. You kinda have to like Japan, Showa-era Japan, and miniatures. But if you do, this is a toy the likes of which you won't find anywhere else. What makes it unique is that, unlike other toy TVs, it comes with an app that lets you choose what the TV shows on its screen by putting a smartphone into the back of the TV. The app will take whatever five videos you choose and play them with a modern look, or the look of a 50's, 60's, or 80's veneer. Also, periodically, the picture will go unstable and you hit the TV to fix it (not too hard; the legs look fragile), just like you would with a TV from that era. The instructions included in the box are all in Japanese, but the app is all in English.

The shortcomings I can think of:

1. It will only let you choose videos from YouTube or other online sources accessible by URL. I'd prefer to have it play videos stored on my device, but that was not possible (or I couldn't figure it out).
2. The video plays with a white border, which leaks through the sides of the screen. If you're interested in using this for miniature photography or video, that might be a problem. You can just put something else in the phone's display, though, without using the app in those cases.
3. The picture goes out a little too often for my liking. It's funny the first couple of times, but when it happens every 15 seconds, it can get tiresome.

Also, I would not recommend this for very little children. It's more of a model an older kid or nostalgic adult would get to complete a miniature diorama.
