Spellbinding Representation Of Technology Gone Haywire

Without a doubt, this was one of the best films of 2009 and becomes one of those spellbinding films that is hard to forget. Director Jonathan Mastow pulls all the stops on this film and doesn't spare any expense when called for on Cinematography, CGI, acting, editing, and great story-line.

Set up to play out in an alternate present of our time (some would argue the not too distant future, however the script is made to be different from the graphic novel), with the development of robotics, mankind has chosen to stay at home operating surrogates while sitting in stim chairs. This allows them to live their lives in the outside world and resolve issues like beauty, health, transportation, sexism, racism, crime, and other complexities without fear of judgment or alienation. Only a few people still live as normal interacting humans in the traditional sense without the surrogates, yet these people live on reservations away from the surrogate way of life.

The film noir plays much like a detective mystery, as Act 1 (approximately 37 minutes long) explains about how the surrogates of a young man and a woman are attacked by a sophisticated weapon which not only disables the surrogate, but also kills the user host. FBI agents Tom Greer (Surrogate CGI and Actual Persona of Bruce Willis) and Peters (Surrogate CGI and Actual Persona of Radha Mitchell) are assigned to the case. Soon after discovering that the operators have also died, Greer goes further in his investigation and finds that there is a conspiracy involving the army, the company VSI that manufactures the androids, the FBI, The Prophet leader of the humans, and the scientist that had developed the surrogate technology Dr. Lionel Canter (Surrogate CGI characters & actual persona James Cromwell).

This film connects with the audience soon into the film regardless of act 1 telling the story mainly through the robot (surrogate) version of the actors. It's a common fallacy to state that this film is set in the future. Although the graphic novel is set in the near future, this film chooses to explain things from an alternate parallel present frame of reference much like District 9 (2009) was presented. This makes it much easier to focus on the surrogate lifestyle without having to worry about a futuristic backdrop having to be created through various means and having to try and sell the goods to the audience.

Some trivia includes the VSI building was depicted by using a digitally altered version of the Dallas Bank of America Plaza (informally known as The Green Building). Some scenes were filmed at the Draper Factory in Hopedale, Massachusetts. A close up shot of Strickland's FBI file shows his place of birth as Lynn, Massachusetts. Lynn is also the real life birth place of actor Jack Noseworthy, the actor who plays Strickland in the film. During the opening montage showing the development of the surrogates, there is a shot of an Asian man with an android twin. This is actually footage of Dr. Hiroshi Ishiguro of Osaka University and his creation - Geminoid, a prototype android double of himself. Radha Mitchell read the comic book while filming. In the "beauty shop" where Maggie works a device can be seen for holding the faces of surrogates, the device is actually a Gorillapod, a flexible tripod for cameras. The opening credits, interspersed with futuristic news footage runs to almost four minutes in length.

This was Mostow's first film since Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003).

A Very Good Sci-Fi Movie

Bruce Willis (Die Hard) and Radha Mitchell (Rogue) star in this futuristic Science Fiction thriller.

The movie is based on an original comic book (Graphic Novel) titled The Surrogates. Humans have developed a technology that enables them to live in the safety of their own homes while their Surrogates perform go to work and play for them. Over 99% of the world's population is hooked into the Surrogate network. When two Surrogates are found murdered Willis and Mitchell begin investigating and soon discover that not only have the Surrogates died, but their human counterparts have died as well. This leads to an action packed investigation and uncovers some very interesting surprised.

The movie is a bit slow at times but the story is very good and all the acting is above par.

Additional Cast include: Rosamund Pike, Ving Rhames, Boris Kodjoe, Jack Noseworthy, James Cromwell, Michael Cudlitz, James Francis Ginty, Helena Mattsso and Meta Golding.

Recommended for anyone who loves a good science fiction movie.

Excellent Movie!

Surrogates is a really good sci-fi movie. It is pretty clean and really doesn't have too bad of language. I knew that it would be a good movie because it had Bruce Willis in it, and it didn't let me down. The story line is excellent and the acting is even better. In the very beginning it is kind of slow, but once it gets into the movie, it's really action packed. The ending was pretty shocking (I'm not going to tell it to you, though), it didn't turn out anything like I thought it would. If you’re into sci-fi movies and you’re a fan of Bruce Willis, you will really like this movie.

Here's a little summary...

Surrogates takes place in a future were you can buy a robot that will live your life for you. It looks like you except it’s a lot better. So you can go and do anything that you would normally do, and some things you wouldn't, from the safety of your home. It's kind of like playing a video game of your life. But when a collage student, and son of the inventor of these robots, is murdered, an FBI agent (Bruce Willis) must go back into reality to solve the mystery of how the student was killed and save humanity.

WHAT A TERRIBLE MOVIE!!!

I tend to feel obligated to write reviews when I feel the movie is a total bomb...like this one!
Im one of those that purchase dvd's even if I haven't seen the movie yet, but I do this mostly with movies that have actors that I LOVE!! like Bruce Willis, I always expect them to be at their best. Well...this wasn't one of those movies, in fact, I hated it.
The movie is slow from the start, nothing happens really that gets you excited! it's mainly about humans having a clone (a much better looking clone too) that is out and about when the humans lay plugged in (or asleep??) clones are actually robots- and I think thats why this movie is terrible!
The plot is not so strong, the climax of the movie is barely there, and the end comes just as quick leaving you feeling, just irritated!
this is not something worth spending money over, rent it and watch it first.
My copy just came in today...anyone wanna buy it?? lol...

One time view only

This is a Bruce Willis movie. It is OK but not as good as it could have been. This movie could have gone in a deep direction. It's Bruce Willis.

Surrogates (DVD, 2010)

I love Bruce willis movies, and he is top gun in my book. In this movie, it was kind hard to understand the plot as who was who. I think this movie missed it's mark as it was played out as a TOP movie, and it was not up to Bruce Willis standards. If it did not have all that PR work on it on bill boards, and every place you looked. "See Surrogates" What a let down! The plot is different, The only thing that all his movies have is that it shown him all beat-up, and still walking. The end is not what I expected. A little better then Average. When do the robots go on Sale?Lire l'avis complet...

An O.K. Movie

I thought this was an Average movie. It is based of a comic book from a few years ago. The special effects of the Surrogates whas good. However, the plot seemed rehashed and uninspiring. When a weapon is developed that kills the real person if their surrogate dies, theres a big chase to find the mastermind behind it.
This movie brings up a few interesting ideas about living life through a perfect surrogate from the comfort Or isolation at home.
If you like sci-fi stuff, then its worth the watch, but it isn't a movie I'd watch twice.
