Rebels is the true successor to the Star Wars name (albeit takes place before A New Hope movie IV)

Rebels is the true successor to the Star Wars franchise, it connects stories and plots from the original Trilogy movies that take place right before "A New Hope" and incorporates elements and characters of the prequels including the CG Clone Wars character Asoka which makes this a direct continuation yet a complete stand alone series. Then season 3 adds the Empire character Grand Admiral Thrawn which makes the Star Wars: Heir to The Empire books written by Timothy Zahn cannon. This is extremely important because those books take place 5 years after the Return of the Jedi (original movie 3) which means Luke's to be Sith / Jedi wife Mara Jade, the Jedi school and the return of the Emperor and many other written stories of the early 1990's could be brought into the official Star Wars universe (which would fill in the huge gap between movie VII). So in the original series Rebels all of the characters are well thought out and get developed in the following seasons, action galore but paced well with beautiful music that takes a cue from John Williams but ads it's own individuality. There are cameos by young Princess Leia, R2-D2 and Lando if I recall correctly (re-writing this review a few years after watching). I enjoyed Seasons 1 and 2, Season 3 gets much more serious and Season 4 is written more for older Teens to adult. Be aware the story takes on more adult tones but tries to keep it PG-13 status (characters die, suggested beheading, slavery, electric torture, etc.) so not at all for young kids. It's been a while since I've seen some of the Clone Wars CG series but if I recall that was darker and Rebels ads in more friendly characters with laughs with colorful images and some really great individual sci-fi stories in the mix. Worth a watch if any of the things mentioned is your interest. A definite for Star Wars fans, the writing and pacing is far superior to the live action VII-IX sequels (any one episode of Rebels is more coherent than those movies).
