Old School Action-JRPG

Star Ocean is one of those Action-JRPGs sagas that you either love or hate from the start due to the commitment you have to put into it.

The game itself is loaded with story, either to be read or watched through cut-scenes, so if you are not willing to sit through a lot of those, this might not be for you.
Playstyle is real time action, as you move through the fields and fight monsters. You can get other characters to join your quest and can play as them by switching between them while in battle. Each of those characters have their own fighting style and mechanics so you need to learn to play them as some are more effective controlled by you in certain situations, rather than driven by the AI. You can assign them "combat behaviours" to be used when you are not actively using them.
As its predecessors, this game also features crafting which is needed if you want to get the best gear.
This versión contains all of the content that was released for the Xbox versión in one disc and some exclusive to the PS3 version's features.

This game is involved and requires dedication if you want to see all that it has to offer. Save points are scarce and sometimes you can play for a couple hours before seeing one so careful planning on not dying is crucial.

Graphics suffer some slowdown during battle due to a multitude of special effects when attacking with some special moves and special combo attacks. Graphics are also not ultra detailed, but that's to be expected of a game this size.

Expect to invest at least 35 hours minimum into this one even if you are good at this type of game.

star ocean the last hope international ps3 review

graphics - they look great. no problems at all. environments are large and fun to explore. character models look pretty good.

story- sci-fi type story. the story is a bit long and with lengthy dungeons you may forget what is going on. otherwise it is pretty good. it is your typical jrpg story where teens with crazy hair save the world and yada yada yada....and if you don't like the story you can skip the scenes and the game will tell you what happened in a paragraph of text.

gameplay- this is where the game shines. excellent real time battle system. can control any character during battle. frame rate is steady. if you enjoy the battle system then the game is worth buying. ***slight learning curve involved but not that tough once you get the hang of it. also there are different difficulties if you want to take the easy route.

voice acting- english- there are some high pitched female voices that may annoy you. also there is a little girl that has verbal tourette syndrome and says the same word at the end of every sentence which is kind of annoying. you can play the game with japanese voices but its only worth it if you know the language. subtitles in 6 different languages also available.

extras- item creation, battle arena, bunny racing, monster data completion, battle trophies(not ps3 trophies, in game trophies that benefit you if you collect them all) and lots of optional quests available. the extras make the game last a lot longer if you get them all.

ps3 trophies- it would probably take you over 100 hours to get them all. so yeah...they're not really worth it

graphics- 8.5/10
story- 6-8/10 It's not bad but also not for everyone
gameplay- 10/10
voice acting- 7/10
extras-9/10

pros-if you like a game with good graphics, decent story, and great battle system then you should buy this game.

cons- story can get lost at times, voice acting may bother you but i believe you can turn it off if you really need to. very time consuming; main story will take a good 40+ hours to beat. so if you don't have free time and patience then this game is not for you.

One of the best RPG experiences I have had on this generation of consoles

The only thing that is keeping this from being a 5/5 is the camera control when in the field. It takes some getting used to and there is no option that I could find to adjust whether you wanted it inverted or normal.

The characters are believable and voiced incredibly well, having the Japanese voices is just icing on the cake.

The story is something that is very out there yet entirely plausible given the direction we are actually heading in the world, which makes it that much more interesting.

Combat is fluid and relatively easy to grasp, yet there is a lot you can get into to make it a lot more involved with the bonus system after battles and with the combo system they have put in place. Boss battles can be brutal if you are simply an attack first heal later kinda player.

All in all one of the best RPG experiences I have had on this generation of consoles.

"Pretty great" RPG for the PS3... Why have I purchased it 6 times....?

This is probably no new revelation to gamers who read reviews but this is a WONDERFUL, classic RPG with a fantastic battle system. It plays like a great PS2 RPG.
I'd give it 5 stars, but the consensus seems to be somewhat the same... This game seems to get repetitive in scenery and battle. It also has a somewhat generic feel to it.
The music is also not particularly absorbing, so.... Laughably, I have bought this game 6 times now (literally) and sold it each time.
Sound crazy?... To you RPG fans, you may understand. I'm still looking for a great and absorbing "good 'ol SquareEnix game". Sadly, I think I keep wanting to like this game for the reason. GIVE it a try! It has decent resale value, and you just may love it.

A staple to any RPG fans collection.

This game is spectacular. I have always felt the Star Ocean franchise has never gotten it's due credit from critics.

Pros-

Great game play- It may take a couple fights to get used to the new blindside system and figuring out how the character attacks depending on the targets location (IE: on the ground, in the air, ect), but the game play is very fun. It also contains 4 differing characters at a time, and with a large list of playable characters you can create many differing parties.

Amazing graphics - The animations during the fighting, the beginning cut scene, the beautiful environments, this game really has it all. It is kind of engineered to look, not cartoon like, but more like "fantasy". It came our nearly the same time is Final Fantasy 13 and that game looked more realistic, but I would put them on nearly equal levels with just a differing art style.

Good pacing of story - This story is very well paced and keeps you moving along well. It also brings in new characters throughout the game keeping you interested with the "who, what, and where". The main story is something you could easily spend 100 hours if you tried to go through every room of the map and unlocking all the chests, and would even spend more time with optional side quests.

Music/sound effects - I have been so impressed with the music in this game and sounds from casting spells and clashing armors. It really brings you into the game. Very impressive work.

Cons -

Edge - For a while there I had a real tough time with the main character of the game. I don't mind a hero with a little emo to him, but he takes the cake for whiniest. If you ever played Final Fantasy 7, he makes Cloud look like he's full of himself.

Bacchus - This dude is a scientist and is really smart as far as the story goes, but his character has a terribly low Intelligence stat. I know it's nit picking, but a little consistency please. It would make him way over powered it they did this, but I felt they could have shaved off some of his HP and gave him more INT.

The story - There are points in the story that just really don't make sense. Not like wholes in the plot kind of things, but such as Edge becoming captain of the Colnus and him and 2 others setting off to find new planets when there were plenty of extra people who could have been additional crew members. Again these things are nit picky and doesn't really break the story, but just some weird things that can make you scratch your head.

Overall -

Buy this game. Play it. Love it. It has been so good that I had to practically make up cons for it.

Best version of this game

It’s pretty great, but not quite as good as the Till the End of Time. Sometimes it feels more like you’re watching it rather than playing it. This is the best version of the game.

This game is definitely worth it!

I played the previous Star Ocean games on PS2. It's been a few years, but Star Ocean 4 definitely serves memory well, and the gameplay has minute yet important changes to the way items are used. Battling is not as boring as in previous RPGs, however, it can get tedious after playing the game through more than once. Bosses are a little more difficult than you might expect them to be, so be prepared before entering into a boss fight.
Square Enix may have started off with Final Fantasy, but for someone that wants to play an RPG that has an extremely truthful scientific nature to it, this is it. Thank you Square Enix, I hope there are more Star Oceans on the way!

Good Game

Nice JRPG game with cool character profile picture settings such as switching between CGI or traditional anime style. Love it!
