Initial thoughts

I hooked this up to my TV and played an old family VHS that I had. It played well. The picture and sound were great. That is all I have done so far.

I bought it to convert my VHS to DVD. I haven't tried this yet. But I read the reviews of previous users who said it was easy to do.

I did not hook up the unit to our Cable TV. I have no desire to use it to record TV programs. I have no idea how easy or hard that would be to do with this unit. All I did was connect it to the TV monitor so I could view the audio/video quality. So far, so good.

I may follow up with another review after I have dubbed some VHS tales to DVD. I didn't want t give this 5 stars because I haven't tested all it's functions and capabilities yet. I gave it 3 stars because it worked well initially. Don't be afraid to try this machine.

Lots of features, but no tuner

When I purchased this DVD/VCR combo, I was looking for 3 things:
1) Basic VCR for the kids to watch their old tapes on.
2) S-VHS VCR to play back some old camcorder tapes that I needed to get into the computer for some editing.
3) An upconverting DVD player.

The Sony VX560 provides all of these in one box, which is very nice for reducing some of the clutter in the entertainment center, especially since it can be connected with only a single HDMI cable. To top it off, it's a DVD recorder, which is a feature I wasn't even looking for.
Good Stuff:
- One touch copying from VHS to DVD, or DVD to VHS.
- Even the VCR can play out the HDMI output, with upconversion. Too many of these combo type boxes require separate cables for the VCR and DVD sections.
- Firewire and USB jacks on the front, so you can watch or record from your digital camcorder, or even dump photos from a camera to DVD for a slideshow.

Limitations:
- No tuner.
- Slow to load most disks. Close the tray and wait....
- No S-VHS recording, only playback. Can only record regular VHS format.
- Refuses to copy most copyrighted VHS tapes to DVD.
- Refuses to record some copyrighted TV shows to DVD.

DVD Recorder w/VCR Combo

I wanted a player to record my old VHS tapes onto DVD. I also have a Sony 8MM video camera and an adaptor to play those tapes in a VHS player which also allows me to burn these to DVD as well. The player works great. The only issue was the door on the VHS would not open well causing you to have to open it to insert the VHS tape. I took the door off and have had no issues since. Since the door caused no issue with the operation I found no regrets in buying it. I do rate it good because of the door sticking and the fact the seller didn't mention it. This would NOT keep me from buying from this seller again. I think got a great deal for the money. I am extremely happy with the player and the purchase.Lire l'avis complet...

Good Unit but not great.

This is a very good unit, easy to hook up and use. The upscale feature makes a very noticable difference in the picture. The only reason I didn't give it an excellent rating is due to the fact that it will not record some TV movies that are copy protected and it will not record some VHS movies either. One thing that I think is a problem is that when dubbing VHS to DVD it will start recording but after it is well into the movie a message comes up saying it cannot record copy protected movies. This is a bummer because it ruins the blank DVD before you find out it won't record it. This is not a problem for copy protected TV programs, as it tells you before it starts recording. All in all in is a very good unit..Lire l'avis complet...

Pretty darn easy

I just wanted a simple way to convert our 20 or so family videos from the original VHS tapes on which they were recorded to DVDs. I read up on the doo-dads that you need certain computer operating systems and such with video editing software, blah, blah, blah. Who has time for that? Especially with my 40 or so hours of video!
I'm glad I got this machine. Read a couple of simple instructions, put in a blank DVD, put in the VHS tape, push the dub button, and walk away. Makes me very very happy!

Great investment!

Had to replace my old DVD recorder (same model #) after converting literally thousands of VHS tapes. I buy both the VHS tapes and the blank DVD's at thrift shops and yard sales. Costs me about $1.00 to record 3 movies or concerts. Bought this one used and it is working fine. Easy process to title and finalize DVD's, so they're playable on any DVD player.
Hopefully, I won't need to, but would definitely purchase again!

Great for converting/dubbing old VHS to DVD. Has an HDMI output so it will work with modern televisions. Auto corrects aspect ratio to 4:3
