Electronic technology on the cheap that still is cool

What with everything ending up on increasingly feature rich and equally richly priced cell phones. The later generation of the "dinosaur" PDA still has a lot to offer those of us not quite willing to invest those big bucks in the fully integrated datebook/on-line/text/voice/music and video viewing life.

For a fraction of the initial cost (and no on-going service fees!)keep your phone separate and get something like this jewel that links to your computer scheduler, can play music files and video files as well as carry your photo collection. You can view and work on word documents and spread sheets, take notes on the fly, update addresses on the spot and even record short voice memos. A memory stick can transfer or save files for use elsewhere. There are even games to truly waste time on a level equal to the internet.

Yes, I Know, I was one of those who said "Gosh, if these things could only dial the number in the address file and work like a phone too, wouldn't that be cool!" And it is to a point. That idea also gave us something that felt like we were holding a small paperback book to our heads or something so complex and still somewhat awkward to use for all functions. It gave us the new term "pocket call" as in "Oh, sorry, I guess my phone made a pocket call to you."

With the bottom keyboard it looks like a Blackberry, is neater than a schedule book and can really help keep all the information we seem to need on an everyday basis in a small package. I really appreciate the fact that all the data can be backed-up on your computer at any time by dropping it into a charger/cradle and hitting one button.

The PDA as a stand-alone is still a good idea and these units are at the peak of the curve on functionality while being attractively on the downcurve of price-onality.

One of the best "old-school" PDAs out there!

Wanting to upgrade from a CLIE SJ30 to something with a little more "power" behind it, I decided to go with the CLIE TG50. One thing is for certain--the various online reviews about the excellence of the TG50 were absolutely spot-on!

The menus are easy to navigate, especially if you've previously owned a Sony PDA of any sort. A QWERTY keyboard makes entering text fast and easy, in addition to the on-screen keyboard and Graffiti writing system. The screen itself, while not the biggest around in terms of size, does an amazing job of displaying images in very fine resolution. The decent amount of flash memory--coupled with a fast processor--enable programs, MP3s, and even movies to run with near-flawless (if not flawless) perfection. The memory stick slot, which WILL work with MagicGate Memory Stick Pro/Duos, Is a HUGE plus. Not only can you store tons of documents, presentations, songs, pictures, and movies on a nice 'n hefty 2GB card, you can also use it with various other types of electonic media--from your camcorder, to your PSP, to your PS3, to anything else that uses Memory Stick technology--a nice incentive for those who like seamless integration between electronic devices. It also comes with Bluetooth built-in, and can sync with your cellular phone to surf the web, send text messages and emails. A voice-recorder and IR function enable on-the-go diction recording, as well as IR universal remote control cababilities (ranging from your televison to your electronic thermostat).

For those who are looking for a Blackberry-type device, but without having to pay Blackberry-like prices, the Sony Clie PEG-TG50 is the way to go!

Perfect in every way!

having owned several different manifestations of the palm over the years I've grown to love this particular unit the most. I've owned visor prism, clie ux-40 treo 90 and a palm zire. This one adds like the ux40 a built in keyboard which is a necessity for people who want to be able to input large amounts of text fairly quickly and accurately unlike the decuma software. The built in screen has high color and is just the right size for pretty much everything you want to do on it. The infrared port is perfect for using the built in remote control and if you purchase noviiremote it works even better. The most versitile universal remote control in the universe. The built in speaker is robust for onboard sound and is loud enough for you to hear even when it's in a leather case. I would like to see more onboard memory but with the memory stick slot you just can't go wrong. I've installed everything from word files to pdf files to movies and pictures. Mp3's play almost flawlessly and running it to another device off the headphone jack makes it almost perfect. all palm pilots have one feature or another missing and the only thing I would like to see integrated into this particular model although it will never happen is a built in phone. Love the flip cover it reminds me of a star trek communicator. "beam me up scotty palm pilots don't get any better than this!"Lire l'avis complet...

Very happy with PDA

Sony Clie PDA discontinued but still excellent product.

Likes:
1) Well made, great looking, hi-res color screen, good weight and balance.
2) Keyboard works great with good feedback, back-lit.
3) Palm OS 5.0. Still a excellent OS for handheld.
4) Memory slot to add more space.
5) Very good battery life, easily last a few days with "normal use".
6) Play video/music with add-on software.
7) Nice build-in cover.
8) Jog dial, major convenient! with large back button.
9) Like the instant record button, handy when needs to make quick voice memo.
10) Battery accessible even though listed as non-user replaceable.

Dislikes:
1) 16M onboard but only 11M available. (just add memory stick)
2) Built-in launcher is OK, but can easily replaced.
3) Stylus toothpick, why bother?

I know cellphone nowaday does have most of PIM function but having a PDA is still convenient. Plus price now with these PDA is very low. Didn't regret purchasing it at all.

Love This PDA

I absolutely love this pda. Does everything I want and then some. It is so easy to use and keyboard is so nice. Graffiti can be a little trick till you get the hang of it, but after you do it so simple.
If you buy a PDA like this I would be suprised if you did not like it. If this PDA tore up tomorrow I would buy another one just like it.
Good Luck!!!

I have used a TG-50 for years.

I've used one for years. Since they are no longer made I felt I should get another one just in case mine fails.

Once learned its easy to use and it becomes indispencable.

When you dont want all your info on your phone.

I am self employed need to keep schedules, appointments. new clients call all the time, needed something to keep track of new leads, phone numbers, addresses for going over and doing quotes. before I had little pieces of paper everywhere keeping track of new estimates. Not no more. This thing is great and the clie memo is the best. can hand write on the screen just like my little scraps of papers, this thing was made for me. Mine didnt come with a memory stick, once I get one I am looking forward to uploading tons of pics of my family, and my business documents, music. The stuff you can do with this little thing is endless. When you get it for a great price like I did it is really worth while. no more packing around little note books and scrap paper for me!!!!!Lire l'avis complet...
