Excellent Camera for Any User

This camera is an excellent buy. The best zoom! In comparison to cameras in this price range, you are getting the best bang for your buck here. Many controls make this a great camera for the expert, who will know what to do with them. For the beginning buyer of a digital camera, you can't got wrong either. There are controls on this camera that are very self-explanatory. You don't need to read over the manual 9000 times to figure it out. You hit the menu and do what you need to do. I owned one before and lost it during a fishing trip, and bought one to replace it the same day! I found myself lost without it, and no other digital could compare to the quality of the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H1 5.1 in my eyes. The only thing I don't like is pause before the shot. There is quick 1-2 second pause when taking a picture, so you may find yourself looking at pictures you may not have neccessarily wanted. However, I use this camera for Ebay, sporting events, my children's photos, work photos, etc. There is nothing I cannot do with the camera. The video/audio capabilites are fantastic too, and very easy to use. The LCD screen is huge, and your pictures are crystal clear! I don't think I couldn't bought a better camera for this price, and if you are looking for cheaper cameras, I would suggest paying a little extra for this one, you won't be sorry you did.Lire l'avis complet...

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H1 5.1 Megapixel

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H1 while being a older camera and not having the huge megapixel count of the newer camera is still a solid camera. My family likes it so much that we have 5 of them.

The Pro's:
Uses regular AA batteries that can be purchased anywhere.
Has a "View finder" as well as a large screen which saves batteries.
Simple direction controls for the most part.
Memory cards are easy to use and purchase and you can save hundreds of images.
Good feel and size for average hands.
12X visual zoom.
You can add filters and other lense adapters.

The Cons:
Low Megapixel count at only 5.1
Not as fast as some of the newer cameras.
Sub menus and some of the little used buttons and commands confusing.
No hot shoe (but then that is a advanced feature for the average photographer).

If you do average photography and don't want to enlarge to larger than 8 X 10 or at the most 11 X 14, this camera maybe for you. It will serve as a good starter camera and has the features to take you to at least the Advanced Amature stage. I just wish I could find a waterproff housing so I could use it under water.

Sony H1 Review

I have owned this camera for 2 years now and safely can say its a good camera in most aspects. Its use in everyday situations is what makes it so decent. There are always pro's and con's to everything, and this is no exception. But, i may say there is more good than bad. The bad itself is my personal opinions that i noticed over the 2 year period i owned it. I JUST upgraded to the Canon XT 8mp Digital SLR... No other reason for me to get rid of this camera. If i could i'd keep both.

Pro's:
-lightweight without being too light.
-Excellant zoom range.
-very good quality photo's in most modes. (i prefere Ap. mode)
-fairly fast shudder speed potential.
-fact it can do 640x480 videos at 30fps. (compression if vids a tad high though)
- Image Stabilization works well. (Some people get confused when the blinking hand is on, thinking the IS is not on, But it is. Its reminding you NOT to shake.)
-Auto focus works very well.
-VERY GOOD FLASH, but can be over powering indoors.
-AF light very handy in low light.
-Low noise in most cases.
-Quiet zoom motor
-Came with 2 good sony NiMH Sony AA's with charger (they still work great to this day!)

Cons:
-Battery life could be better, make sure to bring extra batteries that AREN'T disposable (Battery life would be way better if people used the viewfinder vs screen like a digital SLR)
-Digital zoom sucks, all though decent in precise mode (crops the pic vs really zooming in)
-Auto white balance is poor. Better to set it to conditions manually
-Continuous shooting lacks speed.
-Manual sucks!
-Mic for videos is weak, no wind protection, causing to have a lot of wind noise.
-moderate amount of barrel distortion in full wide angle, but no pin cushioning at telephoto focal lengths (best between 3x - 8x zoom)
-LCD is hard to see outside at times.
-Not a fan of plastic, which the H-series is exactly that. I like a stronger feel material
-Software included is very weak...
-Lens adapter blocks Auto Focus assist beam and also may make a shadow if the zoom is fully retracted to full wide view.

Almost Excellent, definitely Very Good.

In my opinion, this "point and shoot" is the level just below the "DSLR" camera category. Without getting into specifics, it takes excellent pictures, ie: wedding shots, family events, even sporting events (as long as the athletes are not real fast runners).

The slow shutter speed is what eats me alive! It has an "action" setting for sports, but if you are trying to capture that quick action shot, good luck. I usually end up with a picture of someone shoe running away or the flick of hair wisping by. You have to almost time your action shots by pressing the picture button half way, then when your shot comes into view, bam! click the button all the way. Sometimes you get the shot, sometimes you don't. It is the perfect camera for me, it's not over the top complicated. I'm on the fence between a point and shoot and a dslr camera. I'm to chicken to cross over to a dslr yet. Not to mention, the dslr's are pretty expensive and tricky to use if your not "up" on your camera knowledge. I love the Sony DSC-H1, it is a very good camera, just not excellent.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H1

I decided to buy it, because on several tests and reviews this camera got an 9.1 from people who allready bought this one. What I like abt this camera is the display which is very large and clear compared to others. What I also like is the possibility of several automatic programms. What I dislike is when transferring the pictures to my pc and watching them on a 17" monitor, they are all, without any exception vague and not sharp anymore. Also when copying them on a dvd they are not sharp anymore. They only remain sharp when you watch them on a normal photo size. What I also have problems with, is shooting pictures when the object is moving. I can't get them sharp. On the other hand, making macro pictures is very easy and really are beautifull. The menu on the camera is very easy to handle. And also the software that comes with it, is a nice programm. The steadyshot seams not to work everytime, although I really pay attention that it is switched on. I think the price of this camera is really worth it. Overall it is a very fine camera and maybe the other negative points I mentionned will be solved when I have spend more time with itLire l'avis complet...

Even an amateur can take excellent pictures!

This is my second SONY DSC-H1. There are cameras that are sleeker and with higher pixels but I just love my H1. It has a remarkable number of settings which don't take an expert to understand. My pictures are crisp, clear and excellent. I recently took several hundred pictures on vacation and had about 90% printable shots. I enjoy the macro setting using it often to take very close-up nature shots like a bee in a flower. I like to have the camera around my neck or on the shoulder strap all the time so I don't miss a shot fussing with a case. HOWEVER, this habit puts the LCD screen at risk (that's what happened to my first camera).I have shopped cameras extensively and I think the H1 is a great value. It isn't cute or pink or especially portable but if you're pretty serious about your amateur photography, it is a good choice. I like that it uses AA batteries and I use rechargeables. No dock to fuss with or downtime while the unit recharges. I always keep an extra set of charged AAs in my pocket when I'm out taking pictures. A set of regular AAs is a good back-up in my camera bag, too. My e-bay purchase made me so happy because I was able to get into my photography again with a working LCD screen. Using the view finder only was kind of a drag. My husband and I were pleased with the bargain.Lire l'avis complet...

DSC H1

The Sony DSC H1 is one of the last high end Sony digital cameras to take AA batteries. This is a huge feature to me. I travel a lot and don’t want to be out of a camera because the battery is dead. I use re-chargeable at home and office but on the road I just stop anywhere and get some AA batteries.

This camera has more features than I even can try to use. It is a 5.1 Mega pixel camera but you don’t need to use it at that setting. I use the VGA settings so I can Email the pictures. And in the VGA mode you have a 45X digital zoom. In the video mode the pictures are clear and you can even video in low light situations.

Nice camera

I worked for two commercial photographers for three years while going to college. I am very critical about quality photos. I purchased this camera after reading how many people were happy with the results they were getting. I have to say, this camera works great and takes beautiful pictures.

My neice was getting married and asked me to shoot her wedding for her. I wasn't familar with the camera yet so I let the camera do it's own thing in auto mode. The pictures I ended up with would pass for professional pictures even in auto mode. I couldn't beleive how well the camera adjusted itself for the indoor pictures. The megapix are plenty, along with the nice size lens that allows plenty of light in. Once I get use to the camera, I'll be using the manual mode. The only negative thing I could say, would be the amount of time the camera takes to do all of it's adjusting in auto mode. I don't believe there would be a lag time in manual mode.

Great Camera! Especially for the price...

At 5 mega pixels this camera has more than adequate digital quality. The 12x Carl Zeis lens is top quality and works great. Optical zoom is so much more important than digital zoom, 12x is on the high end right now for this price range. The camera has a ton of features that allow you to experiment with photography if you chose (manual mode settings). Otherwise you can simply select preset image types and the camera takes phenomenal pictures with one press of the button. The camera come with rechargeable batteries and a charger. The only drawback is the size. if you want something small to slip in your pocket, this camera won't work, but if you are used to an SLR sized camera, and want decent optical zoom and megapixel size,, this one is for you.Lire l'avis complet...

One of the best digital cameras for well under $500

Pros:
The Sony DSC-H1 has many features and settings to adjust to any situation. I have owned a sony dsc-f707 and currently own a sony dsc-f828 and found that the sony dsc-h1 can take just as good of a crisp picture as my $1,000 sony dsc-f828 and the same for the dsc-f707. You get a 12x optical zoom, mpeg movie mode with audio, 7 scene selection modes, 2.5" lcd and much more for easily under $500 (can be found on ebay brand new for around $400 as of 10/02/2005). Sony always makes their cameras user friendly and easy to learn the settings.

Cons:
It's not the most compact digital camera but with a 12x optical zoom lens and a good sized flash you sort of have to sacrifice. Even though it's easy to use I wouldn't recommend this camera for a beginner because of all the features and settings. It takes time and practice to learn which scene selection + settings are best for certain lighting situations but once you get it down you will be impressed with the pictures taken. If purchased brand new or with all the original cd's then you will get a tutorial cd that will show you which scene selections are best for certain situations.

Overall:
For a digital camera under $500 with its wide range of features, settings and scene selections, in my opinion not many digital cameras in its class compete with the Sony DSC-H1. It's a great camera at a great price!
