Warm, thought-provoking.

What is family? This film shows what appears to be a poor 3-generation family eking out a living of sorts in the seedier part of Tokyo. That they resort to shoplifting and other less-than-legal means to get by does not diminish the obvious love and concern they have for each other, and even for strangers in their midst. Over time we come to realize all is not as it seems, they get arrested and a media circus begins to portray them in lurid tabloid terms. This film won the highest award at Cannes the year it was released, and I can see why. It upends our notions of what a caring family should be, and questions the morality of a system that casts the unconventional in black-and-white terms.Lire l'avis complet...
