Demonic Pokemon for Adults!

Massive JRPG with recruitment system for demons, Fusions to create more powerful demons, fast fights, dark story, beautiful stylized graphics and a deep intelligent battle system that forces you to really learn the weaknesses of every demon you face. This was the first in the main series to release in The west. Third entry in the series. Any fan of the Persona series that is interested in the main series it originated from should start here. This is where the Press Turn system ws introduced. This has the negotiations the series is known for and 185 demons to recruit. A compendium you can register or buy demons from for the fusions you do. This game is honestly one of the best in the series. Highly recommended. Multiple endings and a very high replay value with a 50+ hour first play through. Give this game a try if you can!Lire l'avis complet...

Shin Megami Tensei 3

I have been playing games for nearly 2 decades now and rarely have I been so pleased, so excited over a game that not only do I beat it. But in fact after losing the copy track down a brand new copy just to play it again. SMT 3 has a massive amounts of endings, 6 in total, all depending on personal choices depending on different "reasons". I find it quite interesting that this is one of the few games that doesn't spoon feed you your morals and your main character without having a say on it and just about every decision you take shapes your character differently. More surprising is the level of difficulty, if you are an experienced RPG player difficulty is the last thing you expect but in here no one is safe and from personal experience the more confident you get the worst it turns out when you least expect it as the game likes to throw curve balls whenever by sending unbelievably strong and challenging enemies and bosses....this gets far worse in Hard mode. Demons customization is quite easy but complex to the point of making you really interested on how to make it work exactly as you would like and I found my self trying different things in order to create demons with specific skills. Dante is in the game as well so its a great addition for all DMC fans. This is by far my favorite RPG for the PS2 and one of my favorites of all times, it has made me very interested in Atlus and their future projects. If you can, don't let this one go.Lire l'avis complet...

A mature and challenging RPG!

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne is indeed a great game to play and it still holds up very well after 10 years. The devs have made a great choice of making the graphic have a stylized anime look to it, especially a more mature art style as opposed to going for realism. It made the game feel alive and still keep its mature atmosphere. I also do love its color scheme as I am so glad it did not go for gritty desaturated color schemes and instead went for more hues and shades of colors to convey the mood of the game. It does present some very creepy and liminal atmosphere, fitting for apocalypse Tokyo!
The gameplay is also very solid, especially for any turn-based RPG fans! One of the best feature coming from this is how you can gain an extra turn when you exploit an enemy's weakness or get critical hit. Although, to make things slightly more fair, enemies can gain extra turns too if they exploit your weakness. This game is pretty challenging too so it's definitely not recommended for any inexperienced RPG fans, or any inexperienced gamers in general. Its difficulty is what defined Shin Megami Tensei after all!
Just...don't go for the hard mode as it'll just make you die a lot.
Definitely a Shin Megami Tensei game worth playing!

One of the Best

After playing RPGs for about 15 years, I would have thought I seen it all. I began to get bored of the 'average' rpg, and would wait years inbetween FF releases to even touch a game. But when I got my hands on Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne all that changed. I was emersed in a struggle for good and evil, saving the world, saving the girl, all while enlisting the help of over a hundred different kinds of demons.

The story starts out as the world is about to be reborn by an unknown 'cult'. You and your friends happen to be part of the few who survive. You as a half demon decide to change the world back to normal and thus start your quest.

Demons can be coersed to befriend you, and help you on your quest. As you get stronger they get stronger, you can either allow them to evolve (kind of like pokemon) or merge them with another demon and create a whole new demon.

The gameplay is about 50hrs, at least. There are many different sidequests and even alternate paths and endings. Even Donte from Devil May Cry shows up to push you around. With a charachter art style that could not be forgetton, and wonderful graphics, I was taken back with in the first few minutes of gameplay.

With a great story, intense indepth gameplay, an army of demons to befriend, and some pretty spiffy art, if you can manage to get a copy you can't go wrong with this game.

The best console RPG series.

The Shin Megami Tensei (Megaten) series is little known outside of Japan which is unfortunate, because I believe it's the best console RPG series to come out of Japan. Noctunre's character and party customability puts many other RPGs, both console and PC to shame. The ability to build your character and group as you see fit is one of the better selling points of the game. The cell-shaded graphics also work very well in giving the game its own unique feel while never taking the serious tone away from the game.

However, it's the impressive and somewhat controversial plotline that makes this game so enjoyable. An apoclyptic plotline spanning across a very changed Tokyo. Consisting of everything from creatures of Japanese folklore to Judeo-Christian characters straight out of the book of Revelation it may not be appropriate to everyone's taste, but the plotline which includes six different endings will keep players who are willing to try something a bit different entertained. It also doesn't hurt that Atlus was able to convience Capcom to include Dante from the Devil May Cry series in this game as an antagonist and later on as an ally.

The only real drawback to this game is the amount of time players will spend simply improving their character and their party. The game practically requires that the player spend hours in the same place gaining experience just to survive. It also requires extensive amounts of time to build a "perfect" group as the game tends to be very unforgiving to players who make mistakes during combat.

If you want to try something different and have the money to spend on a copy of a rather rare playstation 2 game, then I highly reccomend this title, just be prepared to sink a lot of time into it.

Nocturne: Pokemon Gone to Hell, but in a Good Way

Somthing that you do in just about every RPG is save the world. Not here. In the first half hour, the earth is destroyed. Instead, by being in the right place at the right time you happen to be in the one location that humans could survive in during this catastrophe brought on by rival cults. Yet through some outside force you awake after this happened as a demon, and the world as you know it is changed as it seems that humans are replaced by demons. And this is only the first half hour.

The story in this game is an interesting one. As you play through you meet with several factions that are trying to control this new demon world. You as a new demon and one of the few survivers of the catastrophe are trying to survive in this world. And to do that you have to recruit demons along the way. Whats nice is there are several ending based on the philosophical decisons you make at some points with statments you choose.

The graphics in this game are excellent. The cell shaded but dark look of the game is nothing short of eyecatching. Environments seem a little bland at times, but the character and monster designs more then make up for it. In fact there is a wide range of monsters from cute, to awsome, even grotesque and outright strange. Yet it all works. Though there are times where character movments, epecially in battle seems a little rigid.

The sound in this game is good. The music is decent and always seems to fit the situation. Also some of the sound effects are nice too. For some some reason to me anyway some of the sounds seem a little muted or somthing. Also there is a generous amount of dialog at times yet there is no voice acting at all.

Where Nocturne really shines is in gameplay. Nnearly all monsters in this game have some sort of elemental alignment that they are strong and weak agaisnt. In fact, most of the gameplay revolves around this and will punish you if you do not pay attention to this. If you hit an enemy monster with the element they are weak against, you get an extra "half turn" if you will during your party's battle phase. However, if you hit your opponante with the element they are strong against, they even might be healed and you will lose a turn during your battle phase. You opponants during their battle phase has these benifits/problems as well. In other words, keeping yoour party of 4 elemently balnaced is practically a must. Another area that is innovative is the fact that with your character, you can change his stats and elemental alignment by ingesting demonic parasites. Depending which one you have equiped you can learn different attacks. However, one of the gamplay's few draw backs is that you can only stock a limited number of abilities through characters. When each character learns the abilities it is limted with, to learn new ones you have to erase old ones. And with the main character you are going to do this a lot and will groan over it. The other twist in gameplay is to form your party you are going to have to recruit the demons that you fight. Instead of attacking a demon, you have the option of talking to it. To convinve it to join you will have to do what it ask from giving it money, an item, and even answering a philisophical question. IF you do what they ask they may join you, though some will run away with the stuff you gave them. In fact in battle some monsters may beg for there lives and might even give you somthign if you spare them.

If you want a great RPG, this is the way to go

The best SMT game!!

This installment of the Mhin Megami Tensei series has to be the best of them all! The complexity of gameplay with demon fusion and the seemingly endless combinations give your imagination endless possibilities. However, the actual task of playing the game is surprisingly easy to understand. There is no two hour tutorial, you are able to learn quickly as the beginning of the game progresses. The storyline is new and fresh, something that only SMT has the guts to experiment with. SMT is known for the use of demons and the such throughput their titles, however, in this storyline it is quite interesting. There is very little to add to this game that could possibly improve it. Maybe charachter voice over but that is not a necessity due to the engrossing gameplay. I wanted this game initially for the rarity and to complete my SMT collection. Now that I have invested a few hours in the game itself, I enjoy it that much more. If Atlus could invest just a little more money in their RPS's and add charachter voice overs Square-Enix could find themselves looking over their shoulder for the best RPG games. I recommend this game if anyone is looking for something outside the usual RPG format and perhaps a little controversey to go with it.Lire l'avis complet...

DARK/GRITTY/CONTROVERSIAL/SHEER AWESOMENESS

Im a RPG fan and I recently stumbled upon the Shin Megami Tensei series with Persona 3 FES (another great title). Although being part of the same series SMT3 Nocturne is way different than Persona, atmosphere, characters, gameplay, is completely different. Gameplay wise its awesome classic turn based style with a twist. Features little or no tutorials forcing yourself to master the game on your accord giving you a sense of pride once you discover a new trick in the system. It features the infamous Demon Fusion system that is seen in nearly all SMT tittle. Certain Demons has the ability to transform after learning abilities (much like Pokemon evolving.Story-wise its not for the religiously moral, but if you have no problem with that be sure to fully appreciate the game story,multiple-paths and endings cause this might be the darkest story ever told. For being a 2004 PS2 tittle it aged extremely well living you little to care about graphics and focus on its high difficulty and demon fusing.

On the optional note: This game is extremely hard and will require total mastery of the system with a lot of dedication. I do not reccomend playing this game until your at least a intermediate RPG player the game will challenge you and force you to level up for hours if necessary.

Remember this word of advice from me.......you'll have fun with EL MATADOR

I Can't Believe I Waited so long to PLAY!!!

This is a really good rpg game! The battle system is very typical turn-based but the cool demons keep you coming back. The game has this recruit system where you are able to recruit certain demons that you fight. You can also fuse two different demons together to make a more powerful one. This is what has me hooked. The story is very unlike any other rpg, and it definitely deserves its M for Mature rating. This is the second element that has me hooked. The world has ended and you, as a new demon can decide the fate of the new world. I have to recommend this game to EVERYONE interested in Role-Playing games.Lire l'avis complet...

A must-have for RPG fans

Though it's a bit more primitive than more recent titles in the SMT series like Persona 4, the gameplay is as addictive as ever. The minimal voice acting lends to the creepy, barren atomsphere. The stylized graphics allow the game's visuals to still look nice today. This is a modern classic, folks. If you like RPGs, the occult, or even Pokemon, you're in for a good time.Lire l'avis complet...
