Standards set for Android Wear, be warned of "dev-keys"

Samsung's Gear Live is the one of the first 3 devices that came out with Android Wear, back in 2014. Now, in 2016, I'd say it's set the standard pretty high.

The Gear Live, from the outside, is a very basic device. It offers a decent 1 1/2 inch screen, a semi-metallic frame, and some rubber-ish, and somewhat stiff bands. Still, it's actually lightweight, and while you'll likely notice it, it has a slim form that allows it to slide under the cuff of almost any shirt.

Packed inside is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, 512mb of RAM, 4GB of onboard storage for the apps, a 300mAh battery that should last you a day, two if you're a light user, and the important offering it had on release, a heart rate sensor. This, along with included gyroscopes and accelerometers, make it a very decent companion device and fitness tool. It's also IP67 water-resistant, so don't worry too much about sweating all over it. Just don't take it for a swim.

It also offered an AMOLED display, the only kind you could find then, and it makes the versatility as a watch VERY high. Most watch faces will offer an "ambient display" mode, which causes complex details to fade out, and colors to almost disappear. The result is a basic, but excellent and functional watch display that allows simple time checking without any real effort.

The reason it sets the standard is, the other two devices that launched at the time were the LG G Watch, and the Moto 360. The LG G Watch had very similar specs to the Gear Live, lacking fitness tools and the AMOLED display, contributing to poor battery life by contrast. The Moto 360 had very underwhelming hardware, only justified by the round display it had, which was also tackled because of the light sensor on the bottom, giving it a "flat tire" look. The Gear Live sets the standard for specs, as most devices use the SD400 processor, and have at least 300mAh. And current devices are starting to offer heart rate sensors and the like, much like Samsung did.

The question is, why would you buy the Gear Live over others? When there's decently affordable options from LG, and Alcatel, why bother with Samsung?

It's affordable.

At this point, Google, nor Samsung, offer the Gear Live. If you've been quick and dirty with Android phones before, you might want to read up on the Gear Live. A lot of them are selling low because of a VERY peculiar, and somewhat critical issue.

"dev-keys."

Dev-keys is appended to software builds of Android Wear. This actually locks them into their version, likely because Samsung was offering a lot of demo units for shops, and for developers to make Wear software. The problem is, now those models are being sold, without the warning of "Dev-keys" that will restrict them from the software updates. If you don't have knowledge of Android, you might find yourself stuck on the original release, restricting you from most, if not all of the software Android Wear has available in the Play Store.

Before you purchase, ask them to check their software version. That can be done by going to Settings, and hitting About. If they say it has "dev-keys" on it, YOU then need to make a decision. Do you have the intelligence, or at least, the sense to follow some instructions to get it on the right track? If yes, buy it and good luck.

Personally, I bought one without a charger. BE WARNED, third-party cradles WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO DO DEVELOPMENT ON THIS DEVICE! They simply lack the necessary data lanes to allow ADB debugging, which is needed to force an update over ADB. Find an OEM Samsung-branded cradle for the Gear Live, or hope they included it. You'll want the model SM-R382 cradle.

Follow some instructions on XDA-developers, and you should be able to get the Gear Live up and running on Android Wear 1.4 (based on Marshmallow) in no time.

Using it for a few weeks, I'd say it's become integral in my life. I don't check my phone for the time now, I have a lot more management of my notifications, and I don't even use my phone's ringtone now. My watch just buzzes me, and I take my call. Mind, you can't take the call ON the watch, but it is a great substitute, and I have very few problems with it. As an aspiring software developer in college, I'm at computers all day. I don't find it any hassle to wear while developing.

If you can go through some hurdles, this is highly worth it, especially considering the prices you can find it at. Just remember the "dev-keys" and to get an OEM Samsung-branded cradle. Model SM-R382.

Some software could use updates

It would be great if you could connect to the SHealth app which is much better. I don't like the Google Fit app, it is never getting my steps right. It is convenient for listening to music and replying to text, ect while at work. You have to play to get any kind of battery life, but once you have it figured out which notifications you want, it does pretty good, about 2 days. It's alot cheaper than other smart watches, for the money, it's a good value.Lire l'avis complet...

Amazing product I use it everyday, the only negative is the battery life but last exactly 1 full day on a charge. Very responsive, love the apps, "ok google' very responsive and accurate. I got it mainly for the fit app but all the other apps avail are great. I like being able to control google music and being able to change songs and control the volume. I would recommend it.Lire l'avis complet...

Wish it had a camera and true phone capabilities

I was disappointed when the Smart watch first arrived. Without true phone capabilities, I felt it was a poor followup to my first and second Samsung watches. But within a few days, I got an upgrade to the phone's software and it is much better. Disappointed I have to download new apps to use much of the Smartwatches capabilities, like watch faces etc.
I enjoy the Smart watch and could recommend it. Especially to anyone who hadn't used the earlier versions.

Better then the newer watches

I've been using the LG Watch Urbane 2nd edition LTE for over a year now. It was good until Android wear 2.0 was released to it. After the update, the watch went to complete trash. I bought this watch because it didn't get the 2.0 update. The watch works perfectly. Android wear 1.5 works perfectly on this watch, with no lag or delays anywhere. Unlike android wear 2.0, the UI on this watch looks great, with colorful cards and simple menus. Battery life will easily last 2 days. The watch has a great design. If you're looking for a SmartWatch, get this one.Lire l'avis complet...

Great Watch .. But...

Awesome Watch... However the charging system absolutely sucks! After a few months (if that long) the contacts on the back of the phone will deteriorate to the point they no longer will contact the charger. This is a design flaw that Samsung is fully aware of. I had mine replaced 3 times under warranty, and then replaced it with EBay Watch's myself twice... Love the watch - hate the charging flaw.Lire l'avis complet...

dynamic imaging and easy to use

I use a samsung s7 with this watch and it is my second smart watch. I owned the black and white version of the pebble when I found this watch soon after the price is great for the functionality.I use it with Tower Wear and my 3dr pixhawk multirotor and the image quality is really fantastic. the draw backs are limited water resistance and battery life I need to charge about every 18 to 20 hours overall I give it a 9 for price and 8 user friendly app.'s I love the watch and if you are looking for a great smart watch with an even better price tag you need to check this one outLire l'avis complet...

Wristwatch adjunct to my smart phone

As with any new electronic device, this watch requires learning and adopting new procedures. The included instructions are minimal and suggest Samsung's website as the source for instructions and the list of functions. In order to get to the watch directions, one must enter the serial number on their sign-up form. Not an unreasonable request except the serial number, apparently only on the box it arrived in was covered by a permanent box seal used to assure the buyer that the box had not previously been opened, and was unreadable. After much careful effort I was able to scratch away the edge of the box seal enough without totally destroying the underlying serial number. Which I then entered on the Samsung form only to be informed by the website the that the number did not exist. I finally gave-up and telephoned Samsung's Tech support. Eventually, I reached a human. I provided her with the Model and Serial numbers I was inputting and she said that my numbers were correct and to just skip the registration part and go into the web site to find the functions and instructions I needed. That didn't work either so I went to YouTube for help instead. I still don't know everything it can do, but at least I found some clock faces. I suggest that Samsung make registering easier or include a full list of functions and instructions with the product.Lire l'avis complet...

Bright display with nice features.

It takes a little getting used to after you use an analog watch, but it looks nice and has a good feel on your wrist. The charger that you use to charge it is a bit clunky but functional. It has a real bright display and you can change the watch face through the app on your smart phone, also it shows whatever emails you get right on the watch. I am still getting used to it myself so I don't know all its features yet, I would recommend this watch though for anyone looking to expand the reach of their Samsung phone, and when your phone rings there is a buzz on your watch alerting you. 5 stars all the way.Lire l'avis complet...

Not Satisfied

The watch looks nice but the watch band does not have the normal samsung clasp.just has a couple of pegs that fit into the watch band holes (cheap) and difficult to put on.The real deal breaker is it doesn't have Samsung software, runs on Google Wear OS. Not impressed. If I had to do it all over again I wouldn't buy.Lire l'avis complet...
