Very accurate movie about the civil war in El Salvador.

Brilliant movie on the civil war in El Salvador. The movie covers the brutality of that war and the politics involved. Its rare to see a film that encompasses so many issues in one package. They certainly did their homework.
Of course, there is gratuitous sexual content, but, hey, thats the way it was back in that time period in that part of the world. I have not been back since the mid 80's, so I don't have any idea if things have changed much (except, of course, that the brutal civil war is finally over).
Tic-tac, a local brew, would cost about .50 cents american for a liter bottle and a lady and room would cost about 12 bucks a night. You had to watch your back continuously, put your back to the wall and face the doorway just in case of trouble. The safest place to be was in the capital, San Salvador, but even there the underground rebels and police along with the National Guard units covering just about every street corner would give people trouble. For awhile it was safe for Americans, as long as you kept your passport with you constantly and enough money to bride your way out of trouble. But that changed over time as the war became a meat grinder that consumed 50,000 people. Then, no one was truly safe. You would see check points with a pile a bodies stacked, those poor souls who did not have their I.D. papers with them or were truly rebels. Students were immediately in peril, since they were suspected of being rebels without a doubt. Anyone with an education was higher on the list of those who were a threat to the gov't.
Anyway, check this one out, it is historically correct, very accurate to the realities of war.

Salvador starring James Woods

Salvador presents us with what is probably James Woods' best performance; one he should have won an Oscar for. The movie could be classified as an action flick but it goes way beyond that. The supporting cast, including Jim Belushi and the very under rated actor John Savage, help bring a dose of personal experience to the character study and the subject matter by mixing humor and outrage into a stewing caldron of political chaos. Salvador is centered on historical truth including the actual evnt of the brutal murder of 4 mission nuns who were trying to help the Salvadorian people and the playing both sides to the middle role that the United States government carried out by supporting a corrupt government and giving arms to viscious militants. The viewer gets a glimpse into the horror of what U.S. intervention into another nations civil war can look like. Well written, excellently directed, and performed with a seriousness that this subject matter deserves, Salvador is a must see movie!Lire l'avis complet...

Salvador

I had seen this movie years ago, and wanted to watch it again, but it was unavailable at our small town's movie rental store. I took a chance and looked on E-bay and got lucky. This movie depicts true events, and is based on a true story. The movie unfolds gradually getting more exciting and riveting as it goes along. It unfolds graduall, which is great, beacause it gives you the time to grasp the horrors and political power hungry world of El Salvador. I have watched it several more times since I got it, and each time I grasp something new in the movie that slipped by me the first time around. It is a powerful telling of actual history unfolding into an all out power struggl of political people with power hungry ruthlessness. Once you watch this movie you will be awakened by the true nature of the world that man needs to dominate.Lire l'avis complet...

Great film, technical issues

4 stars because the DVD would not play when put in the TV's built in DVD player. After 5 attempts we tried playing it in a 10+ year old DVD player attached with RCA cable to the TV, and the DVD played perfectly. MYSTERIOUSLY, the DVD when inserted in the TV's inbuilt player, it then played. I was ready to toss the DVD before trying the old player, thinking the price was extremely low because the DVD was defective.Lire l'avis complet...

One of the must-see films of the last Century

Not a pretty picture of US interference in Latin America during the late 1900's. One of Oliver Stone's best.

Base in true events.

This is one of the first movies that director Oliver Stone made. It takes places in El Salvador in their civil war around the 80's. I liked it because present real problems and true situations. Also the acting for the main actor is really good. The only thing I didn't like was the focus of the story felt a little more the army than the revels. Overall is a Oliver Stone remarkable classic.Lire l'avis complet...

El Slavador

My father is from El Salvador. I've visited El Salvador as a child and I remember how dangerous it was to walk in the street. I remember my family telling me to ALWAYS carry my passport. This movie tells the truth on how El Salvador was in the 1980's. The country is a lot better now. Great movie. I highly recommend it.Lire l'avis complet...
