Good quality

Very good quality dvd for a movie from 1968.I am happy.Director Franco Zeffirelli's 1968 version of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet was touted at the time of its release (successfully, if the box-office receipts are any indication), as something of a "youth trip" movie. This is because Zeffirelli broke the long-standing tradition of casting over-aged, sometimes grey-haired players in the title roles. Seventeen-year-old Leonard Whiting plays Romeo, with 15-year-old Olivia Hussey as Juliet. The youthfulness and inexperience of the leading players works beautifully in the more passionate sequences (some of these breaking further ground by being played in the nude). Among the younger players are Michael York as Tybalt and John McEnery as Mercutio. The duel between Romeo and Tybalt starts out as a harmless, frat-boy exchange of insults, then escalates into tragedy before any of the participants are fully aware of what has happened. R&J Features Sumptious Costuming and Authentic Settings

This version from 1968 directed by Franco Zeffirelli features authentic settings and wonderful costumes. While this version adds some elements to the story (A fascinating dance sequence when Romeo and Juliet meet including a scene which features the late sixties radio hit "Love Theme from Romeo and Juliet", and an extended fight scene between Mercutio, Tybalt, and Romeo, hints of discord between Lord and Lady Capulet) and deletes some others (scenes of comic relief, and shortening of some speeches,discoveries at the tomb), this version adheres wonderfully to the spirit of Shakepeare's work.

A note to educators who might use this and have not previewed this film, the morning-after scene in Juliet's chamber contains brief nudity which may be inappropriate in the classroom. We use an edited version here in west central Pennsylvania.Lire l'avis complet...

BEAUTIFUL VERSION OF ROMEO & JULIET

OLIVIA HUSSEY DESERVED MORE GOOD ROLES THAN SHE EVER GOT. SHE IS MUCH BETTER THAN MOST ACTRESSES OF TODAY. LEONARD WHITING WAS EXCELLENT AS ROMEO & I ENJOYED MICHAEL YORKS YOUNG FACE, HE WAS GREAT EVEN AT THAT AGE. OLIVIA HUSSEY WAS SO BEAUTIFUL THAT DINO MARTIN SAW HER IN THIS MOVIE & TOOK A FLIGHT TO MEET MS. HUSSEY & THEY MARRIED. DINO MARTIN LATER MARRIED DOROTHY HAMMIL THE FAMOUS SKATER. A common man's point of view.

My first introduction to Shakespeare was a good 60 years ago, and not being very good at reading much less comprehending the words, my favorite high-school teacher Miss Mayo, read it to us. My next introduction was not too long ago, in fact. But, (Miss Mayo would scold me for starting a sentence this way) I next came upon Romeo and Juliet through, of all things, BALLET. I've just started collecting ballets, and felt the need to have the story in my collection. As you may or may not know, the music for R&J by Prokofiev is some of the most beautiful ever written. Some say it is the best ballet score of all time, but I do not agree. After seeing the ballet, I decided to read Shakespeare's story again, THEN seeing this movie for sale, well, now you know the "rest of the story".

You might be surprised to know just how close the ballet versions come to Shakespeare's story AND the movie version, without a word being spoken. Now, you aren't going to find ballets on DVD quite as cheap as this movie was, but if you are the true romantic then you should buy any one of the R&J ballets on eBay and introduce yourself to this most beautiful art-form. I'm certainly glad I did and am only sorry I waited so long to start (I'm 77). I hope you will take the plunge.

The beauty of love -- Romeo and Juliet

This is undoubtedly one of the most beautifully made movies of all time, capturing the classical purity of innocence and beauty, unfortunately transected by the destructive forces of a degenerate society which mercilessly kills what is the pinnacle of human reflection and motivation. Zeffirelli does a grand service to Shakespeare and to the movie indistry with this production, and this DVD idealizes these accomplishments with flawlessly sharp picture quality, excellent sound, and of course, the signature cover image of young actors Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting in their mesmerizing embrace which transcends time and location. The movie is excellently priced and a treasure to rekindle the human spirit and enable the recognition of the beauty of the potential of humanity, even in a heavy tragedy such as this.Lire l'avis complet...

Romeo & Juliet DVD

What can one say about a classic? Not only of Shakespeare's play, Romeo & Juliet, but of the film which debuted in the late sixties and took on a life of its own creating fashion statements (every bride that year and the next had to look like Juliet in this film) and the music is still played today, most recently at the Winter Olympics skating competition--when it came out, I was in London and saw it six times. I then had the chance to play Juliet in a college production. I know the play backwards and forwards, and can play the music on piano, and STILL had to have this dvd. MUST SEE!! DOES SHAKESPEARE WELL!!!
