Good if Preset

This mic is great, except if you need to make some settings changes while on the fly. The dip switches require a toothpick or something similar to flip them. These switches are also located inside the battery compartment and require removal of the battery. Over all great mic just know what your settings will be before you leave the house.Lire l'avis complet...

Great product. Great value.

***Updated – This review is for the VideoMic PRO. For some reason ebay asked me to write a review thinking I bought the $150 VideoMic. I realized this afterwards.***

I'm a video production professional, and where I work we use boom mics that easily cost in the thousands of dollars. I bought a Rode VideoMic Pro for a project that I recently did outside of work. I was a little hesitant to buy this at first, but only a little because of the overwhelming positive reviews I kept reading or viewing about it online. And since it was about $200 w/ free shipping, I figured it was my best bet. Well, it wasn't really a bet at all. It was a no brainer in hindsight, because this microphone proved to be fantastic. I would feel completely comfortable using my Canon DSLR with this mic, side by side with the $15,000 Sony camera and booms we use at work – and one of the booms we have where I work is top notch. The VideoMic sounds great, it's easy to use, and very affordable for the quality.Lire l'avis complet...

Great quality audio with excellent features and price point.

The Actual Mic I bought is the Rode VideoMic Pro VMP Shotgun Microphone. The Rode video mics are known for their quality. Purchased for use with Canon t4i DSLR and on a boom pole. The mic has great features a dB +20 boost and -10dB reduction. Very nice quality mono sound - I Usually use a lavalier for interviews but will use this also. Easy to use just plug in and go. For events and spontaneous interviews and sound it is perfect. Also great price point. I am going to pick up a dead cat wind muff for it also, essential for outside filming.Lire l'avis complet...

Good functionality, not great design.

This thing works well. It’s a bit heavier than I expected. This mic has its own power, so you always have to power it up (and I forget sometimes). Also, the sensitivity adjustment can only be accessed by taking the battery out and using a very very small screwdriver or other tool. Lire l'avis complet...

well worth the money

I would not say it was "better" than I expected. In my business we use high end products for broadcast. We decided to "try" the Rode with one of our video camera. It does sound good but not comparable to our our broadcast shotgun mics.(long tube). It does sound a little tinny but easily controlled on a mixer or in post mix down. I am quite pleased with its quality. I give it 4 stars. Lire l'avis complet...

Nice microphone kit

I have only used it for one recording session with several recordings (voice and piano). It worked well, I could not discern a significant difference between regular recording and 80 hz recording. It is a nice compact size that fits well in tight spaces.Lire l'avis complet...

Better perfomance would cost 3 times as much, sounds better than new model

Very good for the money paid. Researched alot of different shotgun mics and finally decided to buy the Rode Videomic. The newer model has more gain but as I found out the Videomic is fine for my Canon HF-G10. Extremely good captured audio using just the camera inputs, but when using my Tascam 100 man did it make the audio come alive with rich bottom and nice clear high frequencies. Sure there are better mics, but this Rode is purpose built and it shows. I've used this to shoot outdoor Airsoft combat and it has held up very well. Used it on a boom too and it works fantastic. Dead cat is a must when windy and filter select is a very nice touch. Seems to have plenty of gain for my camera and digital recorder. Overall for under $150 this is a real bargin.Lire l'avis complet...

Excellent Mic. Great price!

I love this video mic. I use it with a Panasonic Lumix GH3 and it sounds really good. It's a little big for a DSLR camera but the audio quality is fantastic. When I really want to enhance the audio recorded from this mic, I will export the audio that's connected to the video file from Final Cut Pro X and then import the audio into Pro Tools audio recording software and mix the audio to sound like it came out of a very expensive microphone. (Disclaimer: I use the Waves Mercury Plugin Bundle for Pro Tools - a $7,600 audio suite). Since the video mic records incredibly clean and clear audio, it makes enhancing the audio from the mic that much better.

The battery life is incredible: (i.e.) I have use one 9volt battery in this mic for 3-4 months, shooting at least 15 events. The battery was still going strong even when I replaced it. Probably could have gotten even more use out of it, but just wanted to be safe. (I eventually started using "Industrial strength Energizer 9 volts and they last even longer - Wow!)

If you don't have a lot of money to spend, but want a really good mic, this is the mic. This model is discontinued but there is a smaller one by RODE that I hear is even better. (cost a little more but it's good). I paid $175.00 brand new. Found a second one on Ebay for $70.00

Great omni directional mic, terrible shotgun mic

I bought a used one and I thought I was going to get a reasonable deal, but no.

The first and most serious problem is that this supposed "shotgun" microphone is super sensitive and its pickup range is virtually 360, this is a BAD thing for an audio device that is intended to only pick up sound from a narrow cone (pick up angle) of a direction to a mono channel.

I can still hear sounds 25% of the subject's volume from front when turned to the back or sides. The only way is to really lower the DB, and that is the next problem, there are 2 tiny switches inside the battery bay that lowers the manual audio level. But then you also reduce the sensitivity and amplitude range at the same time.

It has a standard TRS mono audio jack, but the cable sways a lot and bounces against the suspension unit which also causes noise, it's just an overall bad design that results in poor audio recording. For something that costs this much I would have expected better quality and sound isolation.
