Great for the hardcore fan of "classic" RE

I bought this game because I'm a big RE fan and I missed this one way back in '02. While the graphics are amazing, the archaic controls and extreme difficulty make it very frustrating for the casual player.
The game uses the "classic" style of Resident Evil controls, which are quite terrible by today's standards. Add to that the game's incredible difficulty level (even on the easier setting it's harder than any of the previous games) and you've got a recipe for frustration.
Seasoned RE players will surely love the challenge though, and I imagine that is who Capcom had in mind when they made the game.
If you've never played a Resident Evil before, I would not recommend this game as a starting point for the series. The far superior Resident Evil Zero delivers the same classic gameplay with many improvements that make it much more enjoyable.

One of the truly great games of all time

Can't say enough about this brilliant game. A true milestone. Still looks and plays beautifully after all these years. Sure, you can get the HD version on modern consoles (which i did and loved), and the graphics are even more mind blowing, but there's nothing like playing the original version on the GameCube and experiencing how Capcom pushed the GameCube's hardware to it's absolute limit. And, as an installment in the Resident Evil series, it's rivaled only by Resident Evil 4 when it comes to gameplay and atmosphere, but still surpasses it in narrative, characterization, and visual storytelling (although RE2 comes pretty damn close-- dated graphics, bad voice acting and all). Simply put, Resident Evil on GameCube is an absolute must.Lire l'avis complet...

Breathtaking

This game is by far one of the best gamecube titles available. The graphics far surpass any game for gamecube to date and the movie like cut scenes with voice acting adds to the drama and horror very well. With the help of the graphics it is a very terrifying game, I had trouble sleeping the first few nights, its like controlling a horror movie. The controls and prerendered backgrounds (prerendered meaning the camera angles are predetermined apposed to real-time camera angles that follow the character) take a little getting used to but once you get the hang of them it makes you wonder why every game isnt designed like resident evil. The genius behind prerendered backgrounds is it allowed the designers to put alot of detail into the backgrounds which makes the graphics absolutely stunning and creepy. If you do have trouble with the controls dont be discouraged, the controls in the game are like a tank's, a forward button and then the control stick is used to pivot on axis. I recomend control setting C, its what I have used and I beleive it is fairly simple because I was able to beat the game twice using it and didnt die the second time at all. Point and fact, I read about the game from doing some wikipeding (my verb for going on wikipedia) and decided to give it a try and it was so amazing I can wait to buy the next installments.Lire l'avis complet...

Umbrella Review

As I have mentioned in my other reviews I am a big resident evil fan ever since I played the orignal Resident evil 1. I was surprised when I found out that capcom was going to remake the first Resident evil for the gamecube. Overall the game was a lot better than I was expecting it was very scary at points and the zombies changing in to crismon heads was a great feature. The puzzles where also great and very challenging which made the game all the more enjoyable. Tha addition of the Lisa Trevor storyline was also brilliant and the new parts of the mansion was great. However one of the most impressive things on this game where the graphics which where brilliant. The game however dose not really have the feel of the original game. So thats why this game gets 4 out of 5 from me. Overall this is still a great game which you will be able to play for a long time with out getting bored. I hope you found my Review helpful. Thankyou DavidLire l'avis complet...

Resident Evil - Re-Imagined for Gamecube

This game is a remake of an original Playstation classic. Though the location and basic story are the same, this really is a new game-no more cheesy live action cut scenes, though still not stellar, the voice acting is much improved, and there are a few nods to the original thrown in to satisfy the die-hard fans. Everything was redone in this game from the ground up, not simply making the same game with better graphics. New puzzles and areas have been added as well as an expanded plot to make the story more emmersive, more like later games in the franchise. Though this is a good game it is not without it's faults. On thing that was great about the original was that the two main characters (Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine) had different gameplay, not vastly different, but different enough to make it worth playing as both, in this version however the gameplay is nearly identical for both characters, lessening replay-ability. But the pros definitely outweigh the cons, the story is good, the puzzles are decent (in that uniquely Resident Evil way) it flows well, and isn't too short or too long. This game is a good retelling of a great classic, and should be in any Resident Evil fan's collection.Lire l'avis complet...

A Remake Delivers New Surprises - A Must Have

This is actually nothing more than a remake of the original game, but don't let that fool you. This game is really something new and fierce, completely different from the first release. I never played Resident Evil until I purchased a GameCube and found out that this title was just a remake. I purchased it, thinking that it might not be uodated with new graphics are anything different from the original. When I played it, I instantly realized that these graphics were toyed with...they were superb. The graphics in this game really shows the power the GameCube has, the power which many people seem to think is non-existant. The graphics were great, the movie scenes were smooth and the lighting involved was so well done that it almost seemed real. As for the game, I really can't compare it to the original Resident Evil release, because I've never played it (as I said). The story was great and something quite new to me. The entire time I thought I was in a haunted house and as you progress and explore, you're finding new locations and documents which reveal that actually this is a hidden lab where an expiremental virus went totally awry. So the story is well developed and really takes you on one heck of a ride. I enjoy the Resident Evil game because it's a mix of adventure and puzzle solving. You'll get your fair share of zombie killing and monster battles...there's some great monsters, by the way...but there's also tons of puzzles. It can be annoying, at times, to pick up an item and have to walk around with it forever until you find the particular place where it can be used. There's a variety of different puzzles that will challenge your skills. The combat is a bit tricky, mainly because you cannot directly aim your gun. You can just sort of shoot straight up, up or down...so sometimes your character misses and you're wondering why your ammo is so low. Also, you have your choice of characters to be; depending on which of the two you choose, the story will be slightly altered in some ways. Also, one great thing about this and Resident Evil Zero are it's scare tactics. In many instances, in a quiet room, something will just pop through the window or through the door and just scary you half to death. It's great how the game tries to mess with your nerves. It's a well rounded game - lengthy, too (it's two discs). The only other thing that some people might have a problem with is the save feature. The save feature here is limited because you can only save where you locate a typewriter and you can only save at the typewriter if you have an ink ribbon with you. At times, you might not have your ink ribbon with you (or have any at all) and you just want to save before you die and lose a lot of covered ground. The save feature is annoying, but makes the game more challenging. Not to mention, if you save less and complete the game in a fairly quick time, you can earn yourself some bonuses. The replay value of this game is pretty good - there's only the one story mode and nothing else, but if you hold on to this game, you'll be playing it in a month or two, trust me. It's a great title that really shows off why having a GameCube is a good investment.Lire l'avis complet...

Ah the old remake

The original resident evil, was very excited to play this. Only problem I have is why Capcom? Why would you keep the fixed camera and bad controls? Otherwise a shining example of how to do a game remake

Remade.. and so much better

This is a remake of the very popular original RE 1. With new graphics, a complete plot re write and new monsters, this is a must play.

An idea might to be to play resident evil zero before this. Even though zero was released after RE 1, it is still the prequal. Although it doesn't hold many things that lead up to RE, but it does have a few secrets.

The plot.
The plot is completely different from the original Resident evil 1. You start of the same, in the main hall and your missing someone. But as the plot unfolds you notice it's nothing like the original. Much more story, and plenty more action. You have all the same characters from the original, chris, jill, barry etc. This game also has alot of new characters to introduce and new battles.

The game play.
The movement is more free, and easy to get the hang of. Still having auto targetting is slightly annoying when you keep aiming for the wrong zombie though. But the backgrounds and puzzles are much more interactive, although it has taken most of the puzzles from the original version and added it's own little touch. You also have a varity of new weapons and a new action, with defence weapons that you can use to attack the monster while they have a hold of you. As with the original different characters have a different story, so i advise playing the game through once for each, as they are both completely different.

The graphics.
The graphics have had a complete revamp. They are truly out standing, from character detail to surroundings.
