An Excellent learning tool

I was pleasantly surprised I could still find this RadioShack kit when I went looking for a present for my niece. She has aspirations of making robots when she's older, so this kit was right up her alley. There is a very well written guide that gave detailed, step-by-step instructions on how to build some really fun projects. My favorite was a synthesizer based on a 555 timer. After I built the circuit, I could control pitch, volume and produce a variety of sound effects by turning the well constructed potentiometer dials. The first time I built the circuit, it absolutely blew my mind. And drove my family crazy!

The book is valuable in and of itself because it gives an excellent non-technical description of what all of the circuit elements do individually and how they work together in circuits. Some might find the print style odd, but it was meant to mimic the lab notebooks frequently used by scientists and engineers to collect data and take notes during experiments. A really nice touch on the kit designer's part.

The kit itself provides all of the wires, resistors, IC chips and LEDs a beginner could want. The console provides a fantastic place to build the circuits without any tools or soldering whatsoever. A kid, or adult, could experiment to their hearts content (this is actually encouraged in the books) and not have to worry about desoldering or needing specialty tools.

Still most useful, even after 20+ years!

This kit was offered for the purpose of learning basic analog & digital electronics, circa 2000-2001. And it is still very useful for that because these basic electronic concepts are still the basis of nearly all modern electronics.

But here in 2022, this kit has yet another use which is really neat - the building and testing of microcontroller (MCU) circuits. Everything need for this is there. You get a built-in power supply, potentiometers for testing of analog inputs, several LED indicators for digital output and logic state testing, pushbuttons for digital input testing, a DPDT switch for various purposes. And if that isn't enough, you also get a speaker and matching transformer for sound testing. Cool!

But even better than all of the above is that the kit includes a nice built-in breadboard for very quick circuit construction and analysis. This means that the kit can also use most any commonly available parts :).

I use one of these kits almost daily in order to test various PIC circuits and it is invaluable for that.

The unit is high quality too. It is well built and quite sturdy.

Some 20+ years after selling at Radio Shack, these kits are still very much relevant.

Learn a ton of electronics principles and circuits in an intermediate-skill kit!

1. Starts with the right components for the experiments
2. Books by the industry expert in teaching circuits-as-building-blocks, Forrest Mims III.
3. Lots of great ideas for building blocks
4. ways to hook the ideas together for more complex circuits
5. Can easily interface with Arduino.
6. Analog and Digital Circuits included.

Worth more than the sale price.

Excellent little setup for teaching electronics, easy to understand workbooks and just the right amount of parts to create some interesting lab experiments to get across basic ideas.

Very interesting projects!!!

Interesting electronic circuits you can build some are digital circuits with microchips. Like the 555 timer chip which is used in clock circuits.

Things were made better than they are today. This is a good unit

Love this! It is just like the one I had years ago.

Great purchase for a beginner

Great way to start learning about the mystery of the electronic world. Very basic, I hope to find matching videos to reinforce what I'm reading and trying.

Great circuits-learning tool.

If you buy it used I would recommend getting it with the manuals OR just find the manuals online -- I was able to locate both after some searching.
