One of the best films about fighting the Japanese during WWII

PT 109 tells the story of one Patrol Torpedo boat serving in the South Pacific during WWII, it's crew under the command of Lt. JG, John F. Kennedy. Release in 1963, the film is crafted in films of that era, and while a bit campy it's still one of the best films about fighting in the South Pacific during the war. It features wonderful cast led by Cliff Robertson (Spider-Man, The Outer Limits, Charly), Ty Hardin (77 Sunset Strip, Battle of the Bulge), James Gregory (Barney Miller, The Manchurian Candidate '62, Beneath The Planet of the Apes), and Robert Blake (Electra Glide in Blue, In Cold Blood, Barreta). Worth having

Having read the book PT 109, I think the movie is a good and accurate portrayal of many of the actions and leadership of our former president and war hero John F. Kennedy.
Very good story displaying the bravery and tenacity of all our heroic WW2 veterans.
A worthwhile addition to any war movie collection .

PT - 109 (DVD, 2011)

Beautifully filmed boat and action scenes of a mediocre story of the WWII exploits of President John F. Kennedy. The story is about his short career as a Naval officer in command of PT-109 and its subsequent sinking in the Straits of Rendova during WWII. His boat was rammed by a Japanese destroyer and cut into two pieces. Half sank with the loss of two crewmen, but all of the others made it to a small island where they hid for several days until rescued. All of the heroics depicted were, I'm sure, true. However, I'm also sure that if he wasn't later elected president, this story would never have been told. John Kennedy is many times more popular in the memories of people today than he ever was in the early 1960s. He was a notorious playboy with his name constantly appearing in the gossip columns of NYC newspapers. His numerous infidelities were well documented and had greatly tarnished his image. At the time of the election, Lyndon Johnson was the outright favorite of the Democratic leadership, who figured that with JFKs history of chasing skirts, and being a Catholic, that he could never carry the Mid-West and the Bible Belt of the South. This movie was made to bolster the career of a man who's previous victories had mostly been with any actress, debutante, model, or New York City career girl who had made herself available to him. As a U.S. Senator, this seems to have been mostly what he did, because as a U.S. Senator, he was only present to vote 30 of 74 opportunities.

Aside from his personal life, I do believe that most everyone thought that his handling of the Cuban missile crisis was good. Hindsight now shows that good leadership along with a large slice of good luck, is what actually worked. We now know that the entire situation (on both sides, USA and Russia) was so screwed up that the whole world was lucky to survive, because this whole thing came so close to exploding.

I personally feel that if JFK had not been killed and had in fact been reelected, he may have been a much better President in this term. He was a smart man and had a dream for America that most haven't had since.Lire l'avis complet...

Still a good movie and great quality DVD

This DVD looks great on HDTV over the old VHS tape on 480 TV's. Worth getting. Watched it on the anniversary of JFK's ordeal. It's not much drama because the story is so well known by older folks but I bet the newer generation would ask what's a PT boat and who is JFK.Lire l'avis complet...

PT 109

PT 109 was a huge hit when it came out following JFK's election as the President. As a youth, I and all my friends loved the movie and we also read the book and built the model of the PT 109.

Now, almost 45 years later, the movie is still fun to watch and gives the viewer an idea of how hard the war in the South Pacific was. The acting is good with a cast led by Cliff Robertson and the scenery and the sets, especially the motor torpedo boats, stand the test of time. They and are just spot on. While Hollywood took some liberties with the timeline of the Warrior River battle, it is just a small one compared to what Hollywood has done with more recent movies.Lire l'avis complet...

I found it enjoyable as I did decades ago. Good charcters. They can or could act back then. Only the plastic is left in Horrorwood.Commies,dirty women,Socialist ites.The spawn of Willard!!

great movie actors fit the part there really is nothing negative about this movie in my opinion .
