I have always like Kurt Russell. During the filming of this movie, he actually drowned and almost died. He plays a fireman from NYC in this movie. Kevin Dillon is mr. lucky, who happens on bad luck in the film. Richard Dreyfuss is an old archetect, but meets and shares love in the adventure. Jacinda Barrett and Stacy Ferguson and Mia Maestro all are great actresses.
This is just as good as the previous film, done in the 70s, with all the top named stars then, follows the same story line.
Now with this film, the special effects are better. A few things grab you and hold your attention. The scenery and believability of the film is great.
I gave this 5 stars, for believability, because of rogue waves? or tsunami's as scientists call them.
Fantastic cast, you can see and agree with both sides when a ships steward says stay here...and another man says, I am going for help to the outside and wants to get out as fast as possible. The dangers of going through an upside down ship, and trying to reach safety, because you know a ship that is overturned in the water is taking on water, because glass windows do not hold up very long against the water pressure. And then there is the leading man and the leader and the sidekick. The sidekick gets it the leading man leaves alive, and there is a happy ending, for some while for others its not so happy.

watch it if you must, but very predictable.
this was a good plot and a good base story, however i was calling the next move the WHOLE way, it was almost like ive seen it before it was so easy to guess (ive never seen the orginal or heard about this one before i saw it, it was just too easy to see the next move) ..... this very well COULD have been better if they didnt make it so easy and typical of a series of events.
i mean, really, they make you hate a character, get him drunk then send him walking across a balance beam, sigh. in addition a series of coincidences kills EVERYONE in the boat BUT the small group who in strange coincidences survive (electric shock kills everyone in one section BUT 3, fire kills everyone else in other sections, and everyone but 3 choose to lock themselves up in a "safe" ballroom thats flooding, what a coincidence that the 5 survivors are all friends and family.
lets not forget to mention the guy whos legs get trapped under a rack that had 3people struggle and strain to move it, yet he remain unaffected and a strong walker immediatly after (not even a bruise?)
an annoying character who keeps holding everyone back saying she would rather sit in a room and drown than try to live, and just does this annoying thing throughout the WHOLE movie where she is too scared to do anything and keeps insisiting she should die and not try. a little boy whos mother keeps leaving him alone and freaking out when she looses him, sigh, how stupid, yeah kida wander off but he was old enough to know they need to stick together geez they kinda overkilled the whole missing son panic, he gets lost EVERY scene.
i just think the "thrill" parts of the movie where typical, and overkilled to the point where you no longer have sympathy. in addition, there was lack of creativity.
the special effects were ok, on a good movie would have gone unoticed, a slow movie like this, they get noticed and seen as less than what they were.

Posiedon
Poseidon starring Kurt Russell and Josh Lucas is a action packed film that is full of intense scenes that will keep your eyes glued to the screen. It is definitely a disaster film so set yourself up before viewing the picture. From the start it is one thing after another, rogue wave, fires, flooding, and many more worst case scenarios.
I have never seen the original Posiedon Adventure, but I though this movie was worth seeing. The actors and actresses were all great in there roles. I would watch it with an older crowd and not with children as it does have allot of scenes with death and destruction. This makes is different from allot of Hollywood films as it is just that a disaster film. So if you are looking for a feel good movie this is not the choice for you. But the intensity will have you glued to your seat.
It is one of the better Summer DVD buys and or rentals this Summer.Lire l'avis complet...
Ship sank, movie didn't...if you're a real disaster fan
Being a fan of the original movie, The Poseidon Adventure, and Irwin Allen disaster movies (well, most any disaster flick, actually), I wanted to see Poseidon very much. And being a big Kurt Russell fan made it even more of a "must see" for me.
I'd heard the "professional" reviewers and critics make their comparisons, pick at the movie and make their "educated" and highly paid opinions known. I ignored them, as usual, and wanted to be my own reviewer.
Because of circumstances, I wasn't able to go to the theater to watch it (drats!) so impatiently waited for it to come to DVD. I started hunting on eBay immediately and found a great deal, so I bought it sight unseen.
I am very glad I did! Poseidon is a fun, action-packed "old cinema meets new" escapist film. The special effects, the larger-than-life actions, and even some good old-fashioned heroes, made this a fun film for those of us who like to watch movies for the fantasy, fun and "not real life" quality!
I enjoyed Poseidon thoroughly. I didn't compare it with the first Poseidon movie (and hope you don't, since the only similarity is the ship going upside down!). And I don't care whether the story was well-rounded or not, if characters were under-developed or overdone, if the lighting was fake, that the water was bigger than life...I don't care what the critics said or how they picked it apart. I enjoyed the action, the fantasy, the fun, the escapism, the popcorn-munching-high-volume-sitting-in-the-dark-forgetting-the-real-world quality of watching Poseidon...in other words, it was a delight to become absorbed in a fun film like I did when I was younger and a movie could enthrall , thrill and delight me. When a movie ticket was a big deal and worth the money!
For anyone who enjoys non-stop action, fun characters, good actors, big special effects and wants to watch a modern disaster film with an old-fashioned disaster epic feel, check out Poseidon! I'll be keeping my copy and watching it many more times!Lire l'avis complet...
Im not even going to write a big review on this movie
,as it is a remake of a movie that was one ofthe best movies ever made. and when you mess with perfection, and try to make a movie , that basically copies a famous original you are doomed. This movie was a disappiontment, maybe because the original was so good.. maybe I thought it would be something more than whatit was, which was a bad take on a true American classic. I would not recommend.. IF you wantto watch a movie like this go get the poseidon adventure. Shelly Winters and the cast ofthe original made it a all time forever Classic.. Building a better mousetrap does not always need to be done. we all know the story, new faces new special effects. new diaster at sea. blah IM being nice with the 2 stars. A Good Rental- Wouldn't own it!
Kurt Russell does an outstanding job at the end when he saves the day- what a twist to the movie! The acting was "B" rated and the special effects were pretty good. I think if you are looking for a timeless classic to add to your collection,that this isn't it. The plot is predictable, the mother with a kid and is ridiculous. He wanders away and it makes for a stupid scene of trying to save the dumb kid who wandered away from his mother and the rest of the party. The kid almost dies- who as a parent would let their child (who looks to be at least 10) wander off while you are trying to figure out how to finally exit the ship that you have spent the last several hours wandering through? Also- the amount of death and the way the the situations went from bad to worse very quickly- any parent is going to be right on top of any child in that situation. Poseidon (2006)...snooze
Well, it did have some tension, which it really could have built upon and become a great movie. But, sad to say, it fell far short of any and all expectations. Some of the lines are so cheezy and trite that I actually had to laugh out loud (yes, while people were dying and fighting for their lives). I wanted to fast forward to the end and skip it, but it was like a bad train wreck: you want to look away, but you just keep watching anyway. Save your money and don't buy this DVD (don't even rent it!). Go out and buy the original from 1972 with Gene Hackman and Ernest Borgnine. It is a classic, almost cult-like film that has legions of devotees, somewhat resembling "Rocky Horror Picture Show". It is worth watching, very campy and entertaining. As with most remakes, Poseidon (2006) tries to fix what ain't broken...save your time and money.Lire l'avis complet...
Average Movie, but Seemed Like a Remake of Titanic
This movie I was actually very interested to see because I had heard such different reports about it. I've heard people loved it, and others that were disappointed. Well, I have decided that for me, I think the movie was interesting to watch, but not a thriller, and not very realistic in its' effects. I couldn't help but think the whole time I watched it, that it just seemed like a bad remake of Titanic. The story was interesting, the effects not so, the cast was pretty good, but overall I'd have to say that it was just average. I can't believe the positive reviews this piece of garbage has gotten!
First of all, how come all the minority actors - two hispanics and a black guy, who actually get some meaningful screen time - end up dead? I guess wolgang peterson isn't into jungle fever - sorry fergie.
The first hispanic dies by altrusitically saving the suicidal homosexual and the other one from a head concussion under water after saving the day with a crucifix, and yet the rest of the entirely caucasian ensemble - with the exception of the martyred ex-firefighter, New York mayor - makes it.
This is why hollywood sucks and I hope the careers of all involved goes like the ship.
This movie sucked beyond suck. It does, however, teach kids how much it sucks to be hispanic, at least, in this country.

An interesting ride
For a ship sinking thriller, it's not a bad gig. Overall the film is entertaining although a bit melodramatic at times. People die, things explode, there's a little something for everyone. As for the DVD itself, it's pretty thin on extra features. That's always a disappointment. So, unless you're a huge fan of Josh Lucas or Kurt Russel, or you find a great sale, this is one for the gift list.Lire l'avis complet...
