Reliable product, consistent performer, deplorable interface. A Compromise!

This auction represents the second Avic Z2 that I've purchased on Ebay. The Avic Z2 model is no longer offered and is now about 5 years old. To clear up a mis-conception, the Avic Z2 is mechanically identical to the Z1 and Z3. It has updated firmware and software from the Z1. However, there are several individuals who will upgrade your Z-series unit to the highest level of firmware. I recommend that those interested in updating their units visit, avic411.com.

I love my Avic and also hate it. I've purchased a second unit because I needed one for a new (to me) older car I recently purchased. The Avic Z2 is classified as a "Head Unit" a sort of Swiss Army Knife chassis that you can bolt accessories to. I have been using the Z2 with the Bluetooth adapter and the XM traffic tuner for years now. Bottom line, this unit works very well and it is a consistent performer. The nav traffic function offered by XM overlays the traffic condition graphically on the screen and offers to navigate you around bad traffic obstacles if you are in navigation mode. My unit is now upgraded to the highest level of firmware with recent maps.

The unit uses a large hard disk to store the map data and also to allow storage of songs that display in a playlist type interface called the Library. The unit also plays out DVDs and allows for countless other accessory connections such as a backup cam and Ipod module. It has tremendous pre-out capability so the unit can be ported into a larger car audio amp and also drive rear seat screens. This allows the Avic to serve music to the front passengers and video to the rears simultaneously. It will also plan MP3 disks, CDs (which it rips to the hard disk) and other modern miracles.

The weakness of the unit is the interface. It's utterly deplorable and unforgivable. Across all the applications, it looks like someone allowed the engineers to just stick lettering and switches wherever they pleased. I can't imagine that anyone was allowed to user-test the Avic. Surely someone would have made mention of the interface.

That said, I simply can't find another more modern unit that does all the things the Z2 does. It's taken me almost 3 years to learn how to use the darn thing. Even yesterday I discovered a new function that would have saved me lots of agony had I known about it years ago.

The head unit market is confusing and poorly documented. Visiting Best-Buy or Al and Ed's is akin to laying your wallet on a chopping block and asking to be cash-raped. Quite simply, few stores or individuals in the mainstream installation market have reasonable knowledge of these units. In know what I'm getting with the Avic. As old as it is still holds its value after using it in 3 cars still works like a charm highly recommended!

I love this unit so much that I bought a second unit for my recent purchase of a Honda CRV. The first purchase was in '08 from a Pioneer dealer for my '08 Tocama. I got a much better deal by bidding than from the sterio shop and they both work the same. Excellent choice!Lire l'avis complet...

Just buy and install for friend and family, if they don't like i just put back to the ebey may be get back money for them , for myself I got 2 , one on each car , I love it very much

Avic Z2

Its a great product I just wish it came with the blue tooth adapter right out the box. I decided to buy this unit because its capable of doing everything i want in a navigation unit

Missing parts

It was missing an RCA cable in the back that i had to go and purchase for another 20 bucks not very convenient and for the bluetooth mic had no clip thats also supposed to be in there
