A melodramatic end, but worth watching.
The film quite accurately shows the attitudes of the day in America, circa 1940. Boys joined secret clubs and were somewhat abusive to those they deemed sissies. Leon Janney plays Penrod very well, and I remember "Junior" Coghlan from a later serial, "Captain America." My only problems occur it the last quarter of the picture where poor Penrod spends the bulk of that part of the picture in tears. Without giving away any spoilers, he endures a few too many bad times for my taste. We are supposed to get over it at the very end where Rodney, the perennial troublemaker, gets initiated into the secret club with the usual beating. My, how times have changed. It is definitely worth watching, but I prefer the 1937 remake, starring Billy Mauch a bit more. Lire l'avis complet...

A real treasure from the past.
A wonderful and moving journey back to the childhood world of America in the 1930's. Entertaining, moving and funny at the same time. A time of boys' clubs, clubhouses and family values. Enjoy!
