Paul Newman by Shawn Levy
I purchased this book because I have admired Paul Newman (since he filmed The Silver Chalice(which he always wanted to forget about). This is a very easy book to read. It holds yours attention. You can put it down & pick it back up- and at 474 pages, you might want to! It has interesting information about his early life and the family's sporting goods business, and according to this narrative, when after the Navy, at Kenyon College, wasn't searching for his identity, but was running from his families' retail business. His first marriage to Jacqueline Witt, an actress, and their 3 children, she going to N. Y.
for possible modeling jobs and he, married with some savings, some estate money and selling encyclopedias, while at Yale School of Drama, on the G. I. Bill, riding the train to N. Y. looking for acting jobs and attending The Actors Studio, learning his craft, always doing his homework which in later years served him well with the characters he played; renegades, heroes, and guys who weren't heroes. His opinion of his career at particular times, according to this narrative, was defined by the films he turned down, the one he was working in at the time, what was going on his personal life, and his talent and interest in auto racing. His second marriage to Joannne Woodward, an awawd winning actress and famous in her own right, and their life in Connecticut and the responsibilities she had for the 6 children (their 3 and 3 from the earlier marriage) was enlightening. Well known for his political interests and his philantries in many different areas, especially the Newman's Own Products, nonprofit, which has generated more than $250 millon for charity, especially the Hole in the Wall Camps, the first of which was in Connecticut (I always thought it was in the West before reading this book) and now in several states and some countries. All in all a fascinating read, about a blue-eyed, handsome, talented guy who very definitely lived life on his own terms, that we can all relate to, and who will always be remembered in our lifetime who said "It,s been a privilege to be here."Lire l'avis complet...
Paul Newman, A life.
I've always admired Paul Newman for his acting, his philanthropic activities and his ability to stay married for over 50 years. I was disappointed to learn that he wasn't always faithful to Joanne Woodward, however and I grew a little tired of reading how handsome he was. Apparently he was close to being an alcoholic, too. I did enjoy the book; it was very well written.Lire l'avis complet...
