Palm os garnet, still usefull and efficient

The Palm Zire 71 is an older unit from Palm. It runs version 5 software so it's a little dated by todays webos, and ios4 standards. Regardless if what you're looking for is a usefull and reliable pda, the Zire 71 is one of Palm's best. The screen is bright and big, 320X320, boasting good image clarity and contrast. The camera is a little undersized, vga resolution, but works well and has good color reproductions. The camera lense is protected by a slider frame like the cell phone slider format common today. I've read that using the camera too much, or sliding the frame too much might damage a cable liking the two halves together, making the pda unchargable.
If you can get it cheap enough, and in good enough condition, this PDA is perfect for using around the house or office to store contacts, and schedules, the Palm interface is quick and easy to use, and has very easy to learn handwriting recognition for people who have difficulty typing on cramped keypads or touch screens.
Highly recomended.

Nice Unit, Nice Deal

Pros:
- This is one HELL of a step up from my old Palm IIIx!
- Blazing fast compared to the Palm IIIx.
- I love the color screen.
- 10MB RAM feels like moving into a luxury apartment.
<br>Nit-Picks:
- I was all used to the original version of Graffiti, now I have to re-train myself to get used to Graffiti 2. It's kinda different.
- The backlit color screen gets overwhelmed in bright daylight.
- The camera picture qualiti isn't exactly vivid, but I didn't expect super quality. It's adequate for quick snaps, but tough to use outdoors.

Cons:
- Battery life is very short compared to Palm III series. Good that it's rechargable - suppose that'll train me to hotsynch more often.
- The physical fit between handheld and synch cradle leaves much to be desired. Hard to tell if it's properly seated, and it doesn't have a good positive lock.

An oldie but goodie

I had trouble choosing between ratings of average and good - I wish there was something in between. But I considered how cheaply you can get one these days and that clinched the good rating.

It has a nice heft to it and fits well in the hand. I also like the blue shell with the metal back.

The camera is only VGA, but it takes nice pictures, considering. I like how you slide the back down to get the camera going.

The OS is an earlier version of PalmOS. It's a little uglier than later versions, but just as easy to use.

In later Palm PDAs, you have more screen to work with, but I found this worked well enough for what I needed.

I replaced my first one when I bought my Palm TX and gave my old Zire 71 to my mother, complete with a mahjongg solitaire program I bought for her sake (she's a mahjongg solitaire nut). She used it every day and I think it's ideal for something like this. Eventually, the screen came to have little round, very worn spots in a checkerboard-like pattern. This was, of course, from the sheer amount of time my mother spent clicking on the little tiles. Admittedly, she's a little rough with the stylus, but to be fair, a couple of dead spots appeared a little early on.

In any case, she dropped it recently and the screen was fubared. Buying a used one on ebay proved to be much cheaper than getting the old one repaired.

A very serious word of warning: keep your Zire 71 charged! If you do not, you will lose all information on the PDA, including any software (other than what comes with the OS) that you've installed and you'll have to start all over again. This is because the Zire 71 lacks a backup battery (which they may have resolved in the Zire 72). However, with any of the Palm products which use PalmOS (which they gave up recently in favor of the competing Microsoft product, sadly) also come with the awesome Palm Desktop software for your PC. This is excellent to use as PIM software even without a PDA, but with your PDA, you can sync all information from the PDA so that in case you lose it later, you can sync again and it will replace the information. I don't recall if it replaces the installed software or not.

Love it, love it...but wanting wireless.

I've adored my Zire 71 for a few years now. It's my first Palm; I'd had only Handspring before that, and was wary when they went under. What I love about this PDA is the surprisingly clear digital camera and the easy to navigate MP3 player, by Real Player. However, Palm's new core software sucks a little in their upgrades of Datebook and Grafiti. Their old platforms allowed for "floating events" and allowed To Do item to show on the Date Book. Grafiti 2 is just dumb, Grafiti 1 is so much easier to use (check internet tech groups for hacks!).

The only reason I'm dissatified is because I'm spoiled now by new technological advances and really want WIFI on my PDA. So, I'm upgraded to Zire 72. The 72's the only Palm with a digital camera, WIFI capacity and the MP3 option.

What a fun, cool gadget!

I decided to buy the Palm Zire 71 becasue of the price, functions, and style.

I am not terribly "in to" electronics. I don't own an iPod or a Zune, I don't have a "smart phone, and I don't do video games. I needed a PDA that would allow me to schedule my life (with handy reminders!),keep track of important people and events, and this PDA does all that, but it also has a digital camera, can play mp3s, and can actually play some games (for the boring times at theairport, etc).

For anyone who is not looking for the end all" electronics and just needs a planner, address book, camera, mp3 player in one, this is definitely the right item for you.

The only problem I seem to be having is finding a way to hotsync the info I entered on my computer with the Palm, and the cradle that came with it makes battery charging a little more work than I'd hoped, but I bought (on eBay) a charger/hotsync cable for about $3.50, and now I'm having no problems.

The Zire71 is the best you can get for its price

Concidering how the market for handheld organizers is today, it seems doubtful that you'll find any other equally-entertaining PDA at the price for one of these. I've had my unit for a little over a year now, and let's just say it has been fabulous. none of the buttons wiggle, and the slider still works just as crisp as it has been when I first recieved it.

Really, I love the bright screen. I love the full bassy sound when I tweak the EQ, and even though the camera isn't great, I love it when at least I HAVE a camera around to capture those short stupid moments. A resolution of 640x480 seems dissapointing these days, especially when it's also a tad on the blurry side, but, hey, for a PDA at this price, who's complaining? Also to be said, is the video playing capability. With the right application and adequate compression, the videos do play quite well. To be honest, I must say it is more useful than my laptop when used on a daily basis.

Battery life is good. Well, due to my use as my MP3 player, I have to charge it everyday, but I'll say it has about the same battery life as my iPod Nano when the EQ is turned on. While on the subject of sound, I'd hate to say this, but the Zire71 blows the Nano away on the same set of earphones. Doesn't matter if you tune the EQ or not. I do however believe that the external speaker COULD be a little bit louder and clearer.

Oh, and I really, MUST say something about the durability. Even though I have dropped this thing on the floor many times from waist height, the pda still seems like its just used normally. scratches are still virtually non-existant unless u look closely at the edges, its then when you notice the few dents.

For its low pricetag, I can't seem to think of another device that can rival the performance and functions of the Zire71. The functions can keep up with the latest competitors, while maintaining the best bang for the buck factor. Perfect for someone who's looking for a good solid first handheld. It's cheaper than the Zire72 but you aren't missing much. The Zire71 still holds its own ground in today's PDA market.

Palm Zire 71 -- It's what I needed.

After 3 yrs and too often used by my toddler daughter, my Zire 31's screen was not reading properly. I went to get a replacement, and then noticed that for only a few dollars more I could upgrade to a Zire 71 or 72. I had become addicted to my Palm calendar and it is all I used to schedule my life. The 71 has a bigger screen and seems to be sharper and quicker. It really doesn't have too many more things than the 31, it's just packaged nicer. One thing that does suck is the dock you have to use to charge and to sync to your computer.Lire l'avis complet...

Palm Zire 71 - PDA Manufactured around 2003

In my opinion the Palm Zire 71 is an excellent device.
It has all the functionality of the Palm's that came before it and a few new cool functions too.

I love the Color Screen because it is so clear and sharp and easy to read. There is no need to find the correct lighting or angle to see the information on the screen.
I like that it has Memory Expansion via an SD Card slot, so you can increase your capacity to store all of your important information. NOTE: Even some of the Brand New Palm's do not have the Memory Expansion capability.
The Palm Zire 71 also plays MP3's, and the Memory Expansion is a great feature if you're going to play lots of them.
I really like the fact that it has Flash Memory which saves the data stored on your internal memory. So, if your battery fails without you knowing it, you don't lose your data. This is an exceptional feature especially if you forget to HotSync your data to your computer.
And additional accessories and replacement parts like cases and batteries are readily available for the Zire 71.
There is also a whole lot of Freeware available for the Palm Operating System.
About the only thing I'm not crazy about is the built in camera (which I probably won't use because the picture quality is not that great), but it still is an interesting feature.
Just like the other Palm's before it, the Palm Zire 71 has everything I need (and more), and it's easy to use and quite a handy device to have around.

I decided to purchase the Palm Zire 71 because I recently had a AAA battery break and leak in my very much older - yet ever faithful - Palm III. There was no power, and of course, no data either. Thank goodness for the Palm OS Hot Sync. Always remember to Backup.
I got my data back, but I decided that after 12 good years with my Palm III, it was time to upgrade to a newer Palm PDA. After reading reviews and seeing the Prices of the brand new Palm PDA's I decided that the Zire 71 was the PDA for me. Since there are no new ones available on the market today, I'd have to get a used one. No better place to look than on eBay. And all those additional accessories and replacement parts are available there too.

Why I like the Zire 71

What I really like about the Palm is that it is back lit and in color. This replaces a Zire 21 which was not back lit and hard to read. At 67 that is important. The Zire 71 also takes a memory card which greatly increases it's storage capacity. I can also add software to my palm.
I also love the Palm OS which allows me to write directly into the 71. Since I have a verison cell phone, I wish I had a treo which incorporates both but the pirce makes the Zire 71 a good buy.
If you have both a PDA and a cell phone and money I would go for the Treo 650, which uses the Palm OS or the Treo 700 which uses Microsoft software.

Palm Zire 71

Palm only sold this model for a limited time, then they moved on to advanced models leaving this great product behind unfairly.

One of the major complaints at the time was that the joy stick would get moved and turn on the unit, running down the battery while still in the case. However this could be resolved easily by buying a better case. The joystick was actually a pro to this device, making many functions easier to use.

Granted the Zire 71 in it's normal setup doesn't connect to the internet via WiFi. but you do have infrared beaming which is neat. It will beam to other devices, not just other Zires. This reviewer's family had 4 units and could sit in the same room and play monopoly, with each person's moves being beamed to the other peoples units. A very nice feature.

As far as the camera, there is no flash, but it still takes great pictures which are easily copied to the units optional SD storage card, and in turn to your pc. You can easily beam the picture to other devices, including many phones.

This reviewer has discovered that while you can find many replacement parts for sale on the internet, there are some that are almost impossible to find. For example there is a cable inside that connects the units motherboard to your cradle for charging and hot syncing. These cables are frequently the cause when your machine won't charge or hot sync and the manufacturer will not sell them. You are told to ship the unit to their repair dept. and the charges are very high.

Even though there are some cons to the Zire 71, The pros outweigh them. It is a great started pda for keeping info and playing games. And there is plenty of programs, utilities and games available for downloading from the Internet, many are free.
