Great, but not excellent.

I bought this camera because I wanted to upgrade from my 6 year old Sony 3.5megapixel camera before a trip to the Caribbean. I wanted something that was rugged that I wouldn't have to worry about getting wet. This camera accomplishes these criteria.

Pros - Easy to use – 5X optical zoom - The camera turns on and is ready to take pictures very quickly. - It's rugged and will withstand a sizable drop. - The LCD display is bright and clear, even in bright sunshine. – The daylight modes, flash photography and macro picture resolution and quality is superb! - The Macro LED's and Macro focus is unbelievable! - Once I got used to the menus, modes changes are easily selectable. - Nice size camera. Not too small, but small enough to slip into a pocket. - I also liked the included heavy duty clip/strap that easily hooked to my belt loop.

Cons - The door seals and latches are wimpy and didn't want to trust submerging the camera for more than a second or two. - The camera design does not allow for a lens cover so it was susceptible to smudges while hanging on belt or in a pocket when not in use - Low light pictures... I haven't found the trick to shooting low light picture. Even with a tripod the picture quality seems grainy. - The panorama and wide modes were undependable and was hit or miss to get a good result.

I do recommend this camera... overall its a very nice camera and I do not regret my purchase. My fears of underwater use stems from the reviews that I've read before my purchase and my observation of the door seal construction and doors remaining latched. The problem is that a great deal of extra care is needed to make sure that there is no dust particles reside in the seal and the door latches properly to keep it waterproof – This is no small task if you are in a hurry, or changing the battery outdoors. On my trip the camera continued to function properly after it was doused with a cran-rasberry soda, splashed at the pool and beach, and was soaked when caught in the the rain. I also submerged it in a pool for a few seconds at a time... so I would deem the camera is dependable for these conditions but still didn't want to take a chance and truly use it underwater while snorkeling.

One other note... the large-bright display comes at a cost... Battery life! Buy an extra battery or two because it depletes them somewhat quickly. I was averaging two batteries a day. Not a real big deal but that whole dust in the door problem again becomes the issue.

I truly feel that this would be a great camera if Pentax would refine the door seals, make a more positive latch mechanism and add a external lens cap.

Great waterproof everyday shooter

Great camera to take with you anywhere. Good image quality and a fun macro function. Only downside is short battery life- not a problem with extra batteries.

Excellent Camera for anyone

AS a scoutmaster I often take cameras into situations which are dangerous for them. Boy scouts (12-18 years old) aren't often very careful with things. After losing two ~$125 cameras I figured I'd give this a try in the hopes that it would withstand everything I could throw at it. I have been extremely impressed with the durabilty and quality of this camera. It has been dropped more times than I can count, it's been submersed in water, sat on, stepped on, ands still keeps on working just fine. My favorite feature besides the durability is microscope mode, where you can take pictures of your small things (like your fingerprint) and see the tinyest details (like the individual ridges). You will not be disappointed in this camera. The one thing that I don't like is that it isn't the best in low-light situations, but that's fine with me.Lire l'avis complet...

This is not a waterproof camera by any measure.

Bought a new oldstock model to bring to our honeymoon in Thailand. I own a Canon Powershot S95 but was looking for something that could take a fall into a river. The Pentax looked like it had a nice feature set for the price, and I've had fun with the Optio line in the past.

We brought it along the night of our wedding. The camera is lightweight and intuitive. Pictures were average in full-light situations and poor in low-light. Images showed a good amount of noise.

The first day in Thailand we were excited to try the underwater features in the hotel pool. After making sure the hatches were secure we fired off a few shots in about 18" of water for about 20 minutes. We noticed while playing the images back that the screen was starting to fog. We brought the camera back up to our room and it was waterlogged. It's a paperweight now.

A good product for the outdoors

The Pentax Optio W90 is a good camera for the outdoors - from snorkeling to body surfing the camera held up to many hard waves in the Alantic and Caribbean. Note to the design engineers (same for other similar underwater cameras) the view screen is extreemly hard to see when taking underwater images. On and under land the camera holds up great to moisture, and high humidity, a worthy investment.Lire l'avis complet...

Pretty sweet camara

I Love the Super macro at 1 cm as well as the under water movies and stills! Viewing through the hdmi totaly downgraded the quality onto my tv,so that scared me at first, but when I viewed stuff off the card directly to the TV via memory card reader in the usb TV port it was all good: ) easy to use menues. aprox 10 min video recording time max per scene (full quality)if card is big enough, but you can restart as soon as the first one ends pretty easily. I turned off the display while recording long scenes and the battery level hardly dropped. the pano stiching mode is sweet to! The carabeaner strap tryed to slide apart after a while hanging from my belt loop and getting pushed around but I just sowed across it : )Lire l'avis complet...

Pentax Optio W90 12.1 Megapixel waterproof camera

Great camera, with lots of features. I needed a waterproof camera that I could take while kayaking, and not worry about getting it wet. It takes great pictures, and HD video. The ability to use up to a 32 gig SDHC memory card is especially nice for long trips, since it will hold LOTS of pics & video.Lire l'avis complet...

great camera

I love the fact that it is water prof and can take a drop. That is how I lost my other camera by dropping it on the floor. I do not have to worry about that know very easy to use. It takes great pictures and is fast to take them. If you want to stand out from all the rest buy a pentax.Lire l'avis complet...

Cheap body

Seems OK so far. Why do you have to write 100 characters, if you can say what you feel in 12? Seems a little silly to me. I waste of time rather, wouldn't you say? As with any new camera, I am still getting used to it, and as I would expect it feels a little odd being different than my old Cannon. Well that's about it. I hope that this is 100 characters now!Lire l'avis complet...

AMAZING. Buy it, you wont regret it.

The macro setting is AWESOME. I have tried with other cameras to get close up shots that would never focus as well. The on camera editing is a pretty neat feature. Images are crisp and clean. I would DEFINITELY recommend this camera to anyone who is interested in an all weather camera.Lire l'avis complet...
