Beautiful Canadian Scenery Calgary, Alberta Area

One of the best western Canada (Calgary area) landscape scenery movies ever recorded! Of course, Costner, Duval & Benning make for excellent lead actors. I would recommend to all. A little gun play & deadly shoot outs but cursing GOD & un-needed nudity were not shown!Lire l'avis complet...

Open Range (DVD, 2004)

"Boss" Spearman (Duvall) is an open range cattleman, who, with hired hands Charley (Costner), Mose (Benrubi) and Button (Luna) are driving a herd cross country. Charley is a former soldier who fought in the Civil War and feels guilty over his past as a killer.

Boss sends Mose to the nearby town of Harmonville for supplies. The town is controlled by a ruthless Irish immigrant land baron, Denton Baxter (Gambon), who hates open-rangers. Mose is badly beaten and jailed by the marshal, Poole (Russo). The only friendly inhabitant is Percy (Jeter), a livery stable owner.

Boss and Charley become concerned when Mose does not return. They retrieve him from the jail but not before getting a warning from Baxter about free-grazing on his land. Mose's injuries are so severe that Boss and Charley take him to Doc Barlow (McDermott). There they meet Sue Barlow (Bening). Charley is attracted immediately, but assumes that Sue is the doctor's wife.

After catching masked riders scouting their cattle, Boss and Charley sneak up on their campfire in the night, and disarm them. At the same time, another attack results in Mose's death. Button is badly injured and left for dead. Charley and Boss vow to avenge this injustice. They leave Button at the doctor's house and go into town, where they lock Poole in his own jail. Boss knocks him out with chloroform he has stolen from the doctor's office. The deputies are locked up as well.

Charley learns that Sue is the doctor's sister, not his wife. He declares his feelings for her, and she gives him a locket for luck. Charley leaves a note with Percy, in which he states that if he should die, money from the sale of his saddle and gear are to be used to buy Sue a new tea set.

Boss and Charley are pitted against Baxter and his men. Charley shoots Butler (Coates), the gunman who shot Button and killed Mose. A gunfight erupts in the street, with Boss, Charley and Percy outnumbered before the townspeople begin to openly fight against Baxter. After an intense firefight, Baxter's men are dead and Baxter ends up wounded and alone, trapped in the jailhouse. Boss rushes the jail, mortally wounding Baxter.

Sue's brother tends to the wounded townspeople and open-rangers. Charley speaks to Sue in private, telling her he must leave. She counters that she has a "big idea" about their future together and that she will wait for him to return. He does return, and proposes to Sue. Charley and Boss decide to give up the cattle business and settle down in Harmonville, taking over the saloon.

Not a "Lonesome Dove", but still a very good movie.

A very good western with strong acting. Duvall has taken over John Wayne's job as the quintessential cowboy - even though he's too old to play the lead "action" role. Costner is always good as an actor and a decent director. This would have been better with a stronger director and better scripting. Some of the scenes have very artificial dialog and conversations seem forced - which is where Costner fails as a director. It's his job to "Make it March" and he's too busy acting. Still worth buying.Lire l'avis complet...

Open Range

Great Movie with two very talented actors, Robert Duval and Kevin Costner. They are both very credible in character. In addition, Annette Benning is also very good. In addition to the fine cast, the r>cinematography is exquisite! I felt as though I was a character in the movie sitting upon a horse and looking over the hills. I'm not sure where the movie was filmed, but it was sure beautiful country! You won't be disappointed with this western. Lire l'avis complet...

Open rage is a perfect title for this movie.

It is very entertaining with all actors doing the roles they are in. A real good western movie. Ilke those types of movies. Robert Duvall is good at whatever action movie he is in.

A top notch western!

The performances of Kevin Costner, Robert Duvall and Annette Bening are extremely well done as is the work of the supporting cast. Both Mr Costner and Mr Duvall are excellent horseback riders The scenery is beautifully filmed and Ms. Bening is a lovely and believable frontier woman. I would rate this film in the top 10% of all westerns. Lire l'avis complet...

COSTNERS VISION OF WHAT A WESTERN SHOULD BE, AT ITS LEVEL BEST!

The term "classic" is overused these days, but I can think of no other word that more correctly describes this movie! I am not even a big western fan, but the story, cinematography, location, and authenticity are stunning! Filmed in Canada on an Indian Reservation that must cover thousands of acres, (check out K. Costner describing the making of the film first hand on the second DVD), shows the epic scale required and masterfully crafted, that makes this film come to life. He and Robert Duvall, (especially Duvall), both hand in flawless, convincing, and complex characters. Annette Bening is also very good in her role, and there is a good chemistry between her and Costner.
It would have been a good movie without Duvall, but he puts it way over the top. Everyone else in the movie is boosted by his performance. Check out the reviews on Amazon if you don't believe me, this isn't just a solid western movie, this is a classic film!

Superior story-telling, acting and scenery that complements Dances With Wolves.

Great Western and the longest and best shootout scene ever filmed. Scenery was gorgeous and shows the unspoiled West that is part of our heritage. Robert Duvall shines as Boss; Annette Bening is tender, tough and her own woman, a rare, honest portrayal of how Women of the West survived and thrived. This film provides one of the very best complement of character actors ever assembled. A must see film. Mr. Kostner does it again! Lire l'avis complet...
