I needed something small............
After having a large A.L.I.C.E. pack with frame, shelf and some personal modifications (and loving the potential), but having back and joint issues which rendered the pack unusable (even a small A.L.I.C.E. would have been a bit too much of a temptation to over fill, and lead to more body aches and pains), I needed something MUCH smaller, but still as utilitarian as possible. I looked around and compared not just overall pack sizes, but construction materials as well. I have dealt with military-issued canvas and commercial reissues in the past, and I have no problem using it. I also knew bearing too much weight is bad for me, so whatever I got had to be small. I found the mini A.L.I.C.E. pack, and knew it was what I needed. Small, yes, but the 3 front pouches keep the options open, and after inspecting the seams and sewn-on areas (such as the straps), I saw no issues with durability or function. The only issue I noticed was one of the shoulder strap buckles was "crooked" (it resembled a parallelogram), no doubt a stamping/press machine error. It did not render it unusable, so not a big deal. Since it is small, I am limited to what I can pack, but for me that is just a simple way to keep my loads small and manageable (and the aches and pains to a minimum). Small capacity and canvas. Works well in spite of that!
Heavier than a regular day pack, but if you like the style, it will work for you.
